I wish MLB could send the Twins down to the minors
???? The same Twins who won 3 straight division titles in this decade and have been competing with the White Sox and Indians the last ten years? If there ever was a team needing to be sent to the minors, it would be a team like Tampa Bay, or Kansas City.

Big move for the Mets. They have the lineup but clearly they need drastic improvement in SP before they legitimately compete for a title. Getting the best pitcher in the game is a huge step in the right direction there.

I can't believe the Twins didn't get any big name back in this deal. At least with the Yankees' and Red Sox' offers they had guys that could've contributed immediately. This trade decimates the Twins rotation and brings nothing in return.(at least for a few years)

You don't understand. The Twins would have had to.....pay someone........

Because they never pay anyone? /cough/ Justin Morneau /cough/ Michael Cuddyer To me it just seems that they didn't want to pay someone 25 million a year, which they cant' afford. However, they were already paying Santana 13.5 million a year, so they could've afforded another young star. They really should've taken the Yankees or Red Sox deals.

The fact of the matter is they didn't even get the top prospect from the Mets (from what I'm reading), and they should have gotten their top two prospects MINIMUM.

Yep, the same Twins that trade away top talent that wants a payday. Too many teams are starting to operate like this on a yearly basis. Please take Tampa, KC, & Pitt too. Baseball would be better if the talent pool wasn't so diluted.

Well, personally I feel like this is more of a reflection of the failure of the league moreso than the failure of the Twins. Baseball needs a hard cap much like Football. There is no way the Twins can afford a team like Boston or New York when their total revenue is less than the payrolls of either of these teams. Minnesota brought in about 135 million last year and had a 70 million dollar payroll, so their payroll was 52 percent of the revenue. New York brought in 400+ million and had a payroll right around 200 million, or about 50 percent of their revenue. So essentially, they aren't spending the same amount of their revenue on payroll, but because Minnesota is a small market team, they could never afford to compete year after year like a team like NY.If anyone says that revenue sharing and salary caps aren't needed in baseball, then they really need to reevaluate.

Is the White Sox GM now working for the Twins?

 I am in total agreement. I don't see how it is good for the game that everytime a big name FA hits the market it is always the same 7-8 teams in the running.

As much as it hurts to lose a pitcher like Santana, the deal he wants is ridiculous. Pitchers can run out of bullets at any time, and unless he has told the Mets he is taking every performance enhancing drug known to man, giving him 6+ years is stupid, imo, of course...

Uh, they have revenue sharing already, guy. You can't make the owners spend.
????? The current revenue sharing is only helps out the lowest payrolls in baseball, of which the Twins are not. The are strictly in the middle and just like the United states the middle class gets screwed.Look at the NFL. They take all of their revenue, put it into a pot and distribute it evenly amongst all 32 teams. Teams can make money outside of this based on merchandising and local TV contracts, but for the most part, whether you own the Cardinals or the Giants, you can afford to field a good team. This isn't true in baseball. Also, you CAN make the owners spend. The NFL has a minimum salary and a maximum salary, so the owners are forced to spend so much and it's in their best interests to spend it on good players to keep their fan base happy.

Yeah but can you imagine the public fallout if the Mets fail to sign Santana and he goes back to the Twins. Santana can pretty much say "I want this much, for this long" and if the Mets don't cave in...

They really should've taken the Yankees or Red Sox deals.
I don't think those deals ever existed other than in the media.
That would be my guess as well. The rumors were always that it would be brutal to give up 2-4 to prospects PLUS pay him $25 million/season, similar to (in football) trading a couple of first rounders for a star QB, then having to give him a 6 year/$90 million contract. The price is very steep to have to do both.

This was a great move by the Twins to bring in 4 prospects for a guy they could not afford and it allowed them to extend Morneau and Cuddyer. If 2 of the 4 prospects become regulars they did fine and they have a history of making out well in these sorts of deals.

Anyone who considers the revenue sharing plan in baseball a true revenue sharing plan is delirious. Hopefully baseball can get it right some day.
