Falcons | Abraham OUT for Week 2

Wed, 13 Sep 2006 18:55:42 -0700

Atlanta Falcons DL John Abraham (groin) is out for the Week 2 game and might not return until Week 5. He is listed as questionable on the team's injury report. DL Chauncey Davis will start at left defensive end.

Posted in the Shark Pool. From KFFL. No link provided and not posted at any of the usual sites. Not surprising though. Falcons haven't said boo, Mora apparently got defensive after he didn't practice, and they re-signed late camp cut Josh Mallard yesterday.

The Week 5 thing definitely needs confirming though...

ETA: Falcon message boarders can't generate a source for this either. And they're :football: . Stay tuned.

What about Kerney? Any word?
To my knowledge, nothing definite. Didn't practice today, listed probable on injury report.
Divisional game against a fairly large rival...I highly doubt anything remotely close to the truth is reported on that injury until Sunday morning. This should turn into a nice chess game, given the love loss between those two front offices.

Scout.com's Randy Taylor thinks Abraham will play.

1) John Abraham (Defensive End, 6-4 256, Atlanta Falcons, acquired through free agency, played for the NY Jets in 2005) is a difference maker. In his first game as a Falcon, he was able to make five tackles, get two sacks, force two fumbles and deflect one pass. That’s a career for some. The plays on the field tell only part of the story. Abraham brings an attitude with him and he makes the opponent game plan to stop him, which obviously helps the whole defense get better. Apparently his groin injury isn’t too bad and he should be able to play in Week 2 against Tampa Bay. This is more bad news for the Buccaneers.
Side note: Who Dat may have the more pertinent stance here. No reason for Atlanta to show their cards at this point. I don't know how connected Taylor is when it comes to this type of information, but the guy is an unbelievable source for football knowledge, scouting information, draft thoughts, etc. With a small degree of separation he was one of the sources I alluded to several times during draft season (a UCLA connection now gone national). I hope Scout let's him spread his wings next spring. He blows away chumps like Chris Landry and Rob Rang. ;)

Sounds like Kerney starts, Abraham sits

Abraham was named the NFC's defensive player of the week Wednesday, but it remained unclear whether he'd be able to earn the honor a second consecutive time.

Several players said they were preparing as if Abraham would not be available. They said they were hopeful he would respond to treatment over the next few days and would play against another NFC South opponent that beat them twice last season, but they felt they would be able to maintain if he is out.

"We're just going to take it day by day and see how he feels," coach Jim Mora said.

Abraham was not made available for comment...

Kerney strained his triceps in his right arm in the first defensive series at Carolina and played just a handful of snaps but said Wednesday he'll be ready to start. How long he'll be able to play remains to be seen.

"I was dong push-ups today, doing manual resistance, and certainly there's no pain running," Kerney said. "It's just a matter of having it as strong as I can on Sunday. I'll know more by Friday for sure how much of an impact I'll be able to have in the run game. I expect it to be to the point where I can play as much as I need to."

Does it matter? If his groin were 100%, the answer would be obvious. Given the nature of groin injuries and the fact that his status is in doubt, why would anyone want to start Abraham? Or are you all just genuinely concerned for him and want to know?

Yeah it matters. Many of us go with a minimal IDP strategy and there isn't much room for adjustment. I highly recommend the approach in redrafts. News like this can be very critical. If he's playing, he's starting for me. Period. If he isn't, I need to decide if I can move someone or just go without a DL. Of course that depends on how serious this turns out to be. Week 5? I need to make a move. One week? I may sit tight.

(Rotoworld) Falcons DE John Abraham (groin) will be inactive Sunday.

Impact: Chauncey Davis will start opposite Patrick Kerney. Abraham wrecked havoc in Atlanta's opener, so Chris Simms, Cadillac Williams, and the rest of the Bucs should benefit from his absence.
