John Carlson (1 Viewer)

I was looking at all the people pimping Rosario and Fasano. So why no love for John Carlson of the Seahawks? He had 50 or so yards in week 1. With the lack of WR's healthy in Seattle, why not take a flier on this guy? I could easily see him putting up close to 100 yards and a score IMO. What does everyone else think?

FBG doesn't even have Carlson listed on their depth chart. They have Courtney Taylor and Logan Payne as the starters this week. Seneca Wallace, Samie Parker and Bill McMullen are next in line.

Im drinking the kool aid.

I think carlson will have a very productive year. Like the earlier poster said, someone has to catch the ball.

Hasselback and Holmgren both seem to pimp him. I think he'll get better each week, even when they get their WR's back. Take a little pocus off him and then we will really see what he can do.

I'd been reading up on him during preseason. Holmgren loves the guy. He had a very good rookie debut. They have no WRs. What's not to like?

My final straw picking him up FBG had him ranked in the top 10 this week. I think if you want to take a flier on the kid you have to pick him up this week.

Debating pretty hard about starting him over Fasano, but haven't decided yet ...

How many rookie TEs have had a productive season? In recent memory (past 10 years), I count zero.
Historically, the TE position has provided some pretty good rookie seasons. Not as many in recent years but a few. I'm not too worried about a comment from the guy who did not even know Carlson was a TE. I think Carlson will prove to be a solid play this year (weak TE#1 or very good TE#2 for fantasy teams).

Some links/quotes I posted in an Carlson thread from earlier this week **cough** search **cough** :wall:

FROM DANNY O’NEIL OF THE SEATTLE TIMES… Carlson didn’t have the luxury of being some wide-eyed rookie. He was the player Seattle picked to be its starting tight end, and Holmgren warned him the learning curve was going to be steep. “We’re going to throw him into the frying pan, I believe is what I said,” Holmgren said. Sure enough, Holmgren spent a good chunk of training camp standing on the accelerator to get Carlson up to speed. Some of it was the player. Holmgren was sold on Carlson heading into the draft, and believed he was the most NFL-ready tight end available, which is why the Seahawks traded away their third-round pick for the privilege of picking him early in the second round. Some of it was the position, too. Tight ends tend to thrive in Holmgren’s offense, or at least they did before he came to Seattle. Guys like Brent Jones and Mark Chmura became Pro Bowlers, but Holmgren’s 10-year tenure with the Seahawks has amounted to a decade long search for a consistent producer at that position. Can Carlson be that guy? “He’s one of those guys that’s going to be a good player in the league for a long time,” Holmgren said. “And he should be. And that’s the way he has been going.”

I think Carlson is going to be a star and I know my man Joe Fortenbaugh has been screaming to me how good Carlson will be this year. In fact, everyone that I know and advise in fantasy football has Carlson on their team. Mike Holmgren knows how to use a tight end (Zorn must have missed this section of the Seattle playbook based on his attempts to get the ball to one of his best players Chris Cooley) and Carlson is the best tight end he has had since Chmura. I expect big things from him and will give Joey “the tipper” Fortenbaugh full credit.

Also, expect to see the Seahawks to throw to the tight end a lot more. Rookie John Carlson looked good Sunday, and when Hasselbeck was asked Sunday what he would do if Burleson were out an extended period, he first mentioned throwing to Carlson.

I don't think Carlson ends up with amazing end of year stats, but I think early season he could string together a nice stretch of games until Branch/Engram return.Plus, I know it's only one week, but 2008 looks like it could be The Year of the Rookies. Something in the water or whatever, I don't know; I just know if you can catch lightning in a bottle, go for it ...

Hey, if it is a gut feeling, go with it. I'm just saying there isn't much precedence for rookie TEs being successful. Shockey is about it and he was highly touted going into his rookie year. Carlson isn't.

Hey I'm just glad the board decided to pimp Dustin Keller... this guy was slipping to me in the 5th round of rookie drafts and in my auction league he has actually become my most reasonable option at TE as sad as that is.

I don't know how he'll do over the course of the year but right now the Hawks have a banged up line (lost a lineman last week), banged up RB (lost Morris for a few weeks) and a ridiculously thin WR crew (lost Burleson, Branch, Obamanu and Engram). They have a good QB and they'll have to throw and those yards will have to go someone. The coach and the QB has expressed confidence in the kid and he had a decent week last week in his 1st start (4-52). He's the only player that will catch the ball that has been practicing with the 1st team. I think he's a real nice start this week vs. SF. As the WR gets healthier the situation will change but he will get a lot of balls of out necessity the next few weeks...

I kept Owen Daniels, but for the same reason I picked up Carlson. He'll be in my lineup if the Houston game is still up in the air on Sunday. Worth a shot!

I'm starting Carlson this w/e. With their core of WRs out he'll get looks from a pass happy Hasslebeck. I think he'll give you 50-60yds and maybe a TD so that's really all I ask from my TEs.

:pickle: I'm starting him over Vernon this weekend.

I just aquired him off the WW this week. I have Todd Heap and Ben Watson as my TE's....needless to say....i'm glad i got him. Starting him this week, and believe he will score decent for me.

I was drinking his kool-aid, but the i got offered Coles straight up for him and took it...

grabbed him last night - someone has to catch the ball there!
This was my logic, but I asked Bloom/Cecil last night on The Audible if Carlson had a realistic chance of being a Top 12 TE season. They don't see it. Engram/Branch will be back soon enough.

I could much more easily see you coming off your meds. :goodposting:  The guy does have possibilities longer term IMO, and Lord knows Hass has done more w/less before, but no, it is not true that "someone 'has' to catch the ball." They could have a lot of 3 n outs and low stats all around. It's very unlikely he becomes a top 12 guy, esp when guys like Engram/etc are back.In bigger (and keeper/dynasty) leagues he's worth a backup flyer or maybe a desperate 1-2 week filler (hey it's the niners), but that's it.

I rolled with Carlson this week thanks in large part to FBGs. Good call. :goodposting:

Was hoping to be one week ahead of the curve on this guy and looks like I was. Should be a top WW pickup this week.

I think he is going to have a darn good year this year, especially since a good portion of the Seahawks receivers are injured. He was someone I was targeting in my rookie draft and got him in the 4th round.

I picked him up over Rosario, put him in my starting lineup, and I don't plan on looking back. I'm excited; he seems to be getting a lot of targets. Even the best tight ends in the league are so darn inconsistent: believe me, I know: the last two years in a row I spent a rather high pick on Antonio Gates, and while he was great in some weeks, he completely disappeared in other weeks. This year I waited till the end of the draft and grabbed Alge Crumpler; I dumped him after the first week.

I don't need Carlson to be spectacular; if he is, great. But so long as he gets a few targets a game and provides steady points week after week, I'll take it. I hope this becomes the case.

Your not the only one. I picked up McMichael but dropped him and decided to try Carlson because of the WR injuries and figured I'd just keep him until Branch and Engram came back then dump him.Only thing is, we only have 14 spots and I'd have to dump someone to maintain him via his byeweek or dump him and I don't have anyone I can drop. But I really don't want to lose him either, since he has an early bye and there is no one out there that offers his potential on the WW.Think I'm going to go without a kicker in week 4 and keep my fingers crossed. If I drop him I won't get him back.

i noticed mayock was very high on carlson in the pre-draft season... he pointed out that he was much faster than his combine time (he had a virus)... he did in fact run much better at the notre dame pro day... he was also described as a TE that was the best two way player among the top 3 prospects (including keller & davis)... no points for blocking, but it meant to see it would increase the chance he would see the field often right away... it was also pointed out that he was far more productive when quinn was the QB his junior season, before the wheels came off on the offense...

what sealed the deal was when frank coyle used witten as a comp player... i wouldn't go that far (he isn't that explosive), but i have to give credit to frank for opening my eyes to the possibility he could be an exceptional player... i think he has a chance to be... some scouts think he is a good enough athlete to give LBs problems in coverage...

Another tight end with no supporting cast in a weak offense. I'll flip Fasano for him.. why not, play the musical chairs.

Problem is defenses will obviously be keying in on him now. Good thing St Louis doesn't have any defense to speak of.

Smith 27-321-1 (34-377-5)Looks like with the exception of Shockey, every other current top notch TE had a so-so rookie year but increased their second year (except for Heath Miller). Winslow wasn't included because he got hurt in his first game his rookie year.I predict Carlson will finish around 40-400-3 for 2008 with 60-600-5 possible in 2009.The rule of thumb for WR is year 3 is usually the break out year. For TE maybe it's year 2.

I picked him up today, dropped Alge.

He's on the field and will be even with Branch/Engram returning. Might even get more looks. Wonder what % of plays he's been in on compared to some of these other rookies being posted in the thread.

nice call..

I picked him up as a Daniels fill-in, after Rosario/Fasano/McMichael were taken earlier in the week.

I had a good feeling about him all along, after reading Holmgren's praise and considering he's their best option right now. I predicted 6-55-1 in a previous thread (PPR, so he was money), and can easily see those numbers next week.

I can see him being a legit starter in a 12- to 14-team league, and could be a decent option even after Engram/Branch come back.

In my league's scoring system, Carlson has produced enough to be #3 in total TE points, of course Witten and LJ Smith are going tonight. Still, he's producing top 10 numbers right now in his first two NFL games. It's only two weeks in, which isn't long, but how many of the other TE's on that list had 10 receptions after weeks 1 and 2 of their rookie season? I suspect that's rather unusual.

To think he won't break the top 12 by season's end, you'd have to believe the field of TE's below him are going to get better or he's going to regress or some combination of both. Maybe TE's are down a little so far and the field will catch up, but two weeks of 4 and 6 receptions is good for rookie no matter what his team situation is. Someone has to have the best rookie season in the record books.

Carlson is doing solid in fantasy football but isn't scaring DC's around the league. I don't think we're going to see much "gameplanning" for a rookie TE who's averaging 5 receptions a game on a losing team.

When Seattle gets some WR help, the offense as a whole will get better so I'm not that concerned about Carlosn losing that many targets as the opportunities might expand as well.

Is anyone dampening expectations for Carlson with the acquisitions of Colbert and Robinson? He'll still have the most familiarity with Hasselbeck.

These are two pedestrian (at best) Wrs. I don't see either of them having an adverse effect on Carlson. They're just not good enough to be taking quality numbers away from anyone with legit talent.

Nope. I expect him to be a serious target all season long. While he doesnt have home run speed of a wr/rb, which teams need to make use of in any passing game, he presents a legit matchup problem for defenses in other aspects. Even with the two new additions and the eventual return of Branch and Engram, Carlson has a spot on the field and will be utilized. Much of this confidence comes from having Hassleback as the QB.

IT IS SIMPLE...He plays DETROIT this week. Pick him up NOW. Watch him go for 90 yards and a TD, then trade him for HUGE value.

I also recommend Julius Jones owners follow the same approach next week. His value will never be higher.

This isn't nearly as simple as the previous poster made it out to be ...

Julius Jones will be on a bye the next week. I think you need to research your schedules a bit.

These stats don't give you a sense of opportunity. When Gates and Scheffler had opportunities, they did great as rookies. Look at the last 4 games of their rookie years. These 2 aren't the case of a rookie wall or of inconsistency, it's just how long the team took to trust them or know what they had. Frankly Shannahan still doesn't trust Scheffler. Seattle has to trust Carlson, at least for another month.
