Jon Gruden snubs NFLN for MNF (1 Viewer)

Incredibly awesome news.

Of course, I probably would have said that if they had replaced Korny with Amy Winehouse.

Tony Kornheiser is great on PTI but he never found his mojo during MNF broadcasts.

As a fan of Gruden I'm looking forward to the new booth but I'm suspect of coaches in the booth that are looking for a new coaching gig. Too many wheels get greased and not enough substance. I'm fine with those coaches in studio but how much will Gruden offer in the booth vs. watching his words?

Bravo ESPN...

The only thing wrong with this hire is that they could be making it again 8-9 months.

 His problem was, he would come in with two or three talking points for a game and beat them to a slow death over a 3-hour plus period. I think Gruden could be really good, so good pick by ESPN!

oh thank god!!

... but hopefully Korny has some plan in place to let us all know how his fantasy players are doing since he won't be talking about it during the Monday night game. Idiot!

Great news, I love his cynical style...he was a riot on the NFL Network during the draft.

This is good.

8-9 Months of Gruden is worth having until they have to pick someone else. Great move, especially if they actually encourage him to talk X's and O's....

Curious...

Is this a true 'replacement' (i.e., Korny wasn't on-board with it), or had Korny stepped aside? Will he continue with PTI if he's been ousted or are his feelings hurt?

I don't know the answer to that, but I'd guess Korny stepped aside gracefully (I doubt it was his idea though). I remember when he 1st started, he seemed genuinely surprised and might've never felt like it was really his thing. Again, just my guess. He'd be nuts to ever consider leaving PTI. Aside from that, he's just a newspaper sportswriter and those won't exist much longer.I actually liked Korny on MNF, but I'm glad Gruden's coming. I'll like him much better.ETA: Kornheiser's quote from ESPN:"I am totally grateful for the MNF opportunity that I truly enjoyed the last three seasons," he said. "I feel we got better each year. My fear of planes is legendary and sadly true. When I looked at the upcoming schedule it was the perfect storm that would've frequently moved me from the bus to the air. I kept looking at the schedule the past month and wanted to find a way to quietly extricate myself.""If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden," Kornheiser added. "He is the two things you most want -- smart and funny -- and has the two things I don't -- good hair and a tan. I love PTI and am looking forward to continuing to yammer and yodel with Wilbon until the end of time."

"So that brown, oval shaped thing on the ground there... what is that and why do they sometimes run with it and other times lob it through the air?"

IMHO the reason why Gruden worked so well with the draft is that he didn't view broadcasting as a career, and so he was loose and glib. I hope that carries over into a gig that lasts longer than one weekend.

I haven't had the sound turned on for MNF in about 10 years. What's it like?
The crowd noise, the theme song, and the banal sideline interviews/vignettes are all the same. Now, however, instead of Al Michaels trying to out-joke Dennis Miller, you have Mike Tirico trying his hardest not to offend anyone - I keep wondering when they're going to resort to having Tirico stroking a bunny during the booth shots to ensure a kinder, gentler broadcast.

Exactly. I think they will. They allow Jaws to do it, why not allow Gruden the same slack? Two football minds arguing the breakdown of plays is  I'm most looking forward to hearing Gruden's bluntness on plays, players and coaching tactics, etc. Great hire.

Interesting.

On one hand I liked his take no prisoners, non-PC approach on NFLN. On the other hand, I don't think he was a very natural conversationalist or very good off the cuff. Hard for me to picture him adding value in real-time as the game goes on. But I sure am looking forward to him proving me wrong, and even if I'm right, he'll be an upgrade over Tony K.

They should have just dropped Tony K and not replaced. You don't need that many talking heads at a football game.

I love Gruden, but I question his ability to be objective since he is looking for a new NFL gig. All he did during the draft was say positive things.

kornheiser's radio show is hilarious and he's a very talented guy; he can talk about politics, entertainment, literature, sports, and he's really smart and engaging.

but even i have to admit it was painful to watch MNF with him in the booth. now we will get his radio show back and i think chuckie will be a huge upgrade on monday nights. so, great day!

huge TK fan but honestly he was terrible on MNF
I kept hoping that the light would come on and he would get it, but never happened. I also like his PTI with Wilbon, but his old radio show was great. I doubt that ever returns, but he was really good there.

I'm buying Tony's dislike for flying as being part of the reason for stepping down. He's quoted as looking at the MNF schedule and not liking the travel schedule. If you look at the MNF schedule, there are 9 games that are outside of the Eastern time zone. To me that would be a big deal if I was a newspaper writer who'd built up a career as a sportswriter who has spent most of his career in the Eastern time zone. Don't take lightly anyone's fear of flying. I take no more than 1-2 flights in a year, and I absolutely hate it.

As for John Gruden, while I agree that he may be in the position of not being overly critical because he wants to get into coaching again, my impression of Gruden is that he's not one to pull punches. He may not have been overly critical at the NFL Draft, but what could one honestly expect from him in that situation? He's a coach, not a pro-scout or professional talent evaluator like Mike Mayock or Mel Kiper Jr. Gruden can't come out and say this pick sucks or that player sucks, because he just doesn't have the knowledge. I'm more inclined to believe Mayock or Kiper Jr when they say it because thats their job. Now if during MNF broadcasts Gruden calls this play-call brutal, or suggests a team should have run a different play, then I'm more apt to believe him because he's a coach.

Having said that, I'm in favor of Gruden replacing Kornheiser. I'd rather listen to Gruden talk football than Kornheiser, even if its going to be very short term.

Christopher

They may have to consider bumping the 7 second delay to a 15 second delay though.

Great choice. Gruden should be an excellent choice.

Glad enough to see Tony leave, but was not so very impressed with Gruden during the draft.

Frankly, he seemed a little lost (perhaps lack of research on the new draftees) and to pull his punches at times.

I would have thought they could do better (not sure who but think it would make a good thread) and would have liked to see a team that would move forward, not a 1 year fix.
