Jon Lieber signs with Cubs... (1 Viewer)

Per Rotoworld:

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Cubs have signed Jon Lieber to a one-year contract.

Lieber is the last Cubs pitcher to win 20 games and pitched for the team from 1999-2002, but missed much of last season with a foot injury and will soon be 38 years old. He's reportedly been assured that he'll have a spot in the Cubs' rotation, which Rosenthal speculates could lead to a Jason Marquis trade or Ryan Dempster returning to the bullpen.

As a Cub fan, I'm fine with this. Yes, he's up there in age, but has never had an ERA over 4.93,

and usually will eat quite a few innings. Plus, he comes cheap. He'll probably do as well, if not better than others

making at least double what he'll get paid. Not bad at all for a fourth or fifth starter.

Is this move a precursor to a Roberts deal? Right now, the Cubs don't seem to need another 5th starter. However, if Marshall, Gallager, etc. are traded, there could be an opening.

There are worse gambles out there. This likely regulates Dempster back to the pen (where he belongs).

If McFail doesn't come down off his demand of Hill or Marmol being included in a package with Marshall, Roberts won't be a Cub.
