Jones vs. Washington (1 Viewer)

May not be worth a lick, but I thought it was interesting how Mort and Schefter talked about how the Jets don't have a real No. 1 RB, and that they'll "stay with the hot hand."

They also said Jones and Washington should be thought of more like RB1 and 1A, rather than starter/backup.

Washington obviously was going to have an expanded role, but as a Washington owner, I definitely would like to see if this shakes out today.

It will be interesting, indeed. If Leon starts hot and gets carries while TJ stands on the sidelines, that shakes things up.

this is not really news taz...
Maybe not, but I haven't heard it said in such strong terms. Seems to indicate Jones' hold on the starting job isn't a lock, and gives more weight to the Washington hype.

Longtime Jets fan here and far from a Thomas Jones hater. I like Thomas Jones a lot .... but Leon is by FAR the Jets best RB.

This is the strongest language yet, as mentioned above. I am just wondering about two things, his source, and reality. I don't doubt this may happen, but I would like to know if this is from a coach or a source close to the Jets and whether they do this come game time. Many are quick to have Leon be the workhorse, but TJ has some good carries left in him.

Washington is more dynamic, but Jones is the better pure runner. I doubt Washington gets any goalline carries (am I wrong about this?), but 6 catches=TD in ppr, so it is hard to say who will have a better day.

Owning both in a dynasty I will be watching closely. I have never played Washington over Jones. Today might be that day.

I know it was only preseason but Leon was flat out impressive as a "pure runner" in the games that I saw him play.

If they are on the 1 or 2 yard line, no. Leon will not get any "goalline carries." Those will be TJ. However, Leon will certainly get redzone touches and Leon doesn't need to be on the goalline to score a TD. He can score from anywhere on the field.Leon will (should) have 6-9 TDs this year (counting 1 on special teams).

I think both will be pretty solid options today, NYJ will be relying heavily on the run to ease Sanchez in. Jones prob will get most of the carries while Sanchez checks down to Leon. How many recs will Leon get? 6? 8?

Leon is still our full time kick returner. He should return punts in the 4th quarter of a close game but it looks like Jim Leonhard is our full time punt returner.

One reason, a big one, that favors Jones is his blocking. With a rookie QB in his first NFL game... I think Jones will see plenty of snaps. A 60-40 split is likely the ceiling. Could go 70-30.

I think the way to attack the Houston D is to run at the DT's. That is a better fit for Jones, although Washington has improved running between the tackles, his best game is outside stuff.

L. Washington = C. Johnson and T. Jones = L. White.

Jones is a joke...outside his stat line he put the ball on the ground twice and was lucky teammates recovered. It's only a matter of time until Jones is getting 30-40% of the carries.

ETA...LOL then Jones runs in a 30 yarder.

This is a really really really dumb statement. TJones = Lendale?!? Really?!? I mean really?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!As far as the game goes(jets homer) both guys got a big chunk of touches, and the way I see it, there will be weeks when leon rips off those big runs which TJones ripped off today. Also, in PPR leagues Leon is gonna be gold. I am really really really happy with the change in ideology on using Leon. Mangenius was an idiot and never realized the talent he had. I expect leon to be top 20, possibly top 10 in ppr. He is going to be big...

Carries were 57/43... a bit more Washington than I thought. Washington did have 4 catches, and Jones none.

Jones did fumble, but only once, not twice. He only fumbled twice all of last year... don't make it sound like he has a ball security problem... geeze, some people really make reaches, even make stuff up to support faulted opinions.

At the end of the game, and the season... Jones gets his. He won't match last year's numbers, but his predicted demise is premature.

I'd love to see a breakdown on the % of plays they were each in. Watching the game it felt like Washington was in a lot more during the first 3 quarters, I'm sure somewhat because the Jets were in a ton of second and long and third down situations. I was unimpressed with Jones until the end. I don't know if he turned it on, the D got worn down (Jets had the ball nearly 40 minutes), or if it was just a commitment to a power running game with Jones as the beneficiary. I thought Leon would get more looks in the passing game. He stayed in a fair amount to help block and Sanchez was really good at scrambling away from pressure to look downfield rather than dumping off to safety valves when the heat came.

Well a rich man's L. White. :coffee: It wasn't the best analogy but an average RB in a very good situation. Washington moves the ball, moves the chains while the other gets stuffed and then gets to vulture TDs off the better RBs work. Jones looked completely average for the entire game (14-16) with two fumbles while Washington was making plays and moving the chains every time he touched the ball. Jones stat line looked great when all was said and done thanks to the lines blocking and him going untouched on two runs.

TJ was a steal at his ADP - he will be the thunder and TD machine this year - Leon will get his big plays and see more carries but there will be pleanty of carries and stats for TJ.

my bad, they gave one of the fumbles to Sanchez on the handoff and I thought it was Jones who mishandled it.

He gets to play behind that same line every week. So, it's not exactly a huge flight of fancy to think he may wind up with more than a couple more "untouched TD runs" this season.Thomas Jones was criminally undervalued in almost every one of my leagues this year, regarldess of the big game he had yesterday. That performance just sort of "poured salt on the wound" of the situation, so to speak.

Jone won't score two TDs every week. He may get near 20 total touches every week if they are leading in the 2nd half, though. Touches=opportunity to score. If the Jets D is for real, they could be leading a LOT.

You are a delusional Leon owner. The analogy was absolutely terrible on multiple fronts. Lendale doesn't ahve the body of work TJ has. He lead the conference in rushing last year, hardly an average back. He's got some mileage, but even in his split role will get 1000 yards easily this year. And I think we have all learned by now that the old, 'he looked like crap, except for the 4 big runs he pulled off' statement is just plain stupid. You have to have better selfrespect than to invoke that one. Bottom line is, they took a lead, ran the ball, and won the game. Over the duration of all that, TJ got 20 touches for a 100+ yards and 2 tds. End of story. Well, almost end of story. Other part of story is Leon also got about 20 touches. Great news for him as well. jets will run run run a lot this year. As long as both are getting touches, the TDs will go either way on a game to game basis. Give leon his 20 touches and he will produce, no one is denying that. But to come here and go 'waaaahhhh, TJ is a vulture, he sucks, and is eating into Leon's numbers' is a sheer display of ignorance...
