Jordan Shipley the new Housh? (1 Viewer)

I'm starting to think Shipley can be a serviceable guy even in standard leagues. After missing the Tampa game with a concussion, Ship was on the field for 63 of the Bengals 74 snaps last week at Atlanta. Of course, they were in catch-up mode for much of the game, but Cincy seems to be favoring the 3-wide look as their standard formation. Bratkowski likes the 3-wide, no-huddle style a lot.

Even when Carson had a cannon of an arm, he loved throwing to Housh underneath. Last year he bemoaned the fact that he didn't have the same connection with Caldwell that he did with Housh. But Carson and Shipley are clearly on the same page already; just look at the TD last week, great adjustment by both. Plus, Ship is a hell of a player. He catches everything, and has surprising burst.

Maybe I'm just talking myself into it, since I am leaning toward adding him to start this week. But the guy seems legit. Even with TO and Chad competing for grabs, Shipley looks to me like a guy who can join Housh, Welker, Collie as a fantasy-relevant slot guy.

He's definitely a great underneath option, but the problem is that with TO and Chad there, plus Gresham, there isn't a lot of targets left unless they Palmer is really airing it out.

You're correct that he won't be highly targeted, but he's been averaging 5 - 6 targets a game, and has an 84% catch rate. He's likely good for 4-5 catches a game in the CIN system, with an occasional TD. He is a decent flex play in PPR formats with a little upside, and a pretty high floor ( per game ).

What he said.It concerns me some. I mean it's not like the fourth option is an ideal FF situation for opportunity, but somehow the rook is getting it done. With he and Andre and Gresham, makes me wonder if there will still be two old WRs there in 2011. Also makes me wonder if Matt Jones and Antonio Bryant hung it up too soon. Apparently, now we're learning they were beaten out by some top talent and not necessarily that they're just "has-beens."

Because of one good game?
No actually he is going to be really good. Great long term player in dynasty leagues. He will be a receptions machine for years to come.

Dropped Jacoby Jones and picked this future stud up. The next Wes Welker possibly?
Maybe, but I'm not counting on Shipley being a Welker clone. He has better deep speed than Welker, but I don't think he has the same suddenness that Welker uses to get open underneath.I saw a lot of him at UT, and he has great hands and good elusiveness after the catch ( a very good punt returner in college ). I think he'll be used more down the field than you see from Welker. But he has a chance, in time, to be the QB's best friend... he'll gain a lot of trust by catching nearly everything thrown his way.

He's safe to play when it looks like Cincy is going to get blown out. Otherwise bench. They are playing Miami (not a high-powered offense) so I would sit him this week.
