Want out of Cleveland? Get in line.

Can we fire Mangini yet? PLEASE?

Cleveland Browns' Josh Cribbs reportedly would like trade if new deal can't be reached

By Mary Kay Cabot

October 15, 2009, 8:50PM

Browns receiver Josh Cribbs wants to remain a Brown for the rest of his career, but if the team is unwilling to extend his contract, he'd welcome trade, a source close to the situation said.

Cribbs, who signed a six-year extension in 2007 worth $6.77 million, is under contract through 2012. He has made it clear since the off-season that he wants a new deal in the form of a contract extension. In fact, he considered holding out at the beginning of the season.

The source said two teams inquired on Thursday about trading for Cribbs. The Palm Beach, Fla., Post reported that two of the teams interested in Cribbs are Kansas City and Oakland. Indianapolis has also been mentioned.

But unless they make the Browns an offer they can't refuse, nothing is likely to happen by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline.

The Dayton Daily News reported the Miami Dolphins expressed interest.

The Post also reported that Cribbs has asked to be traded. Cribbs' agent, J.R. Rickert, declined to confirm that but stressed that Cribbs "wants the extension, and if we don't get it, we're going to have to look at our alternatives."

Rickert also emphasized that "nothing would make Josh happier than for me to tell him we were able to work out something with the Browns. That's what he wants. He loves these fans and he loves this city."

Although the two sides continue to have dialogue, a new deal has been at a stalemate for quite some time. However, it hasn't stopped Cribbs from playing with the same reckless abandon on special teams. He leads the league with 877 kick-return yards and 260 punt-return yards.

The Browns are believed to be unwilling to trade Cribbs before Tuesday's deadline, a source said. They prefer to hang onto him and perhaps work out a deal in the future. Cribbs is the prototypical player for coach Eric Mangini, one who has tremendous passion for the game.

Cribbs needs to listen to Ocho. He tried this already. Cribbs is under contract for 3 more years. Unless you're the QB, don't bother.

How exactly is this Mangini's fault again? I agree that they need to pay him, but it was Lerner and Savage that (allegedly) promised him a new contract last winter.

i don't think it's Mangini's fault, but he needs to convince Cribbs that he will be the first one with a new contract when the season is over.

II'm reading that quite a few players do not like Mangini.

and the players loved Romeo. what is your point?can't we give Mangini more than 5 games before trying to run him out of town?

No. Not really. Get him out of here.

I thought the denver 'fans' were pretty stupid for trying to run mcdaniels out of town before they even played a game, but 5 games is fair.

run ratgini out of town.

Why didn't he ask for more money when he signed his current contract just over ONE YEAR AGO? And it's a 6 year contract. What has he done in the last year that he didn't do before that, that shows he deserves more money? Don't sign a lesser LONG TERM contract just to turn around and ask for a bigger one just over ONE YEAR LATER.

It's stupid.

Cribbs, who signed a six-year extension in 2007 worth $6.77 million, is under contract through 2012.
Am I missing something here? Human nature of course, but I am getting sick of these guys wanting long term security and then demanding a new deal a year or two later to try and keep up with the Jonses.

This is ridiculous. He has 522 return yards. 877 yards would give him an average of about 42 yards per return. Plus, the only reason he's leading is the number of times other teams kick off to the Browns after scoring. He's only 8th if you go by yards per return.

Please don't dispute kaa with facts, it causes him to go into a rage and call this place a cesspool.

what's weird is the linked story has the yards right. why would kaa change it to an absurdly high number?

The Browns : "that's funny Josh but we're gonna choose option 3 and make you play out your deal. Now back to work."

9 catches for 39 yards. He might want to do something as a WR before demanding more money.
i'd be perfectly happy if he got a decent raise and never played another snap on offense again.
I know he's a good returner. Currently, he's 8th on kickoffs and 3rd on punt returns. Is that really worth significantly more than 1 million per year?
i wouldn't say significantly, but considering all the work he does on the coverage teams as well, i think he's worth more than they're paying him.maybe i'm just pissed that they're willing to waste millions of dollars on "talent" like Donte Stallworth, but they can't take care of Cribbs who is one of those hard working "heart and soul of the team" type guys.

He didn't. The original story had the 877. It's been edited since.

I don't know what he's asking for but it doesn't seem like you'd make trade demands for an insignificant salary increase.

Why did he sign that contract? Why did he take a signing bonus if he wasnt going to honor it?

it's obvious that no one, certainly the Browns, are even going to entertain the idea of giving him a new contract since he signed a deal just last year. It's not as if he's one of the top players in the league. He just wants out of Cleveland.

He might be the most valuable special teams player in the league, but he's got almost no leverage whatsoever here.

I think it's interesting to see the teams that have allegedly shown interest.

The Colts are one of the best run organizations.

The Dolphins have been very good under Parcells.

The Chiefs have been terrible but have a GM who is expected to be a good one.

The Raiders...uhm...nothing nice to say about this ballclub so I'll shut up.

While he says he love Cleveland, it might be more of ploy to just get out of dodge here. I sure wouldn't want to play there right now.
The players hate Mangini. That's what's going on here. This can't work. The franchise needs to move on. I bet the only way he was able to keep the Jets together was that they won games. Mangini can't go 3-13 with this coaching style in his first year and survive.Oh and BTW I have a fairly reliable source (someone who is a friend of Quinn) that says Quinn wants the hell out of Cleveland as fast as possible. Everyone was lying through their teeth about Quinn selling his house not meaning anything. The locker room is fractured. Consider that a rumor, but, there it is.

That doesn't surprise me one bit. You can't run the team they way Mangini was running it and expect the players to fall in line. I can't see this ending any way but bad for Mangini.

i would just like to point out that nowhere does Cribbs say "Pay Me or Trade Me."
i take that back. it sounds like that's exactly what he's saying now.this is really becoming a distraction. i think he's underpaid, but they need to shut up and play football and take care of this in the offseason.

The agent for Josh Cribbs said Friday that the Browns are being unfair to Cribbs and that they should either pay him or trade him. The remarks came in response to Browns coach Eric Mangini saying, "[There's] no interest in moving Josh Cribbs" before Tuesday's 4 p.m. trading deadline. "It's unfair for the Browns to hold Joshua back," said current agent J.R. Rickert. "They should either give him an extension or allow another team to acquire him. Their current position of doing nothing is no longer fair or appropriate. We are asking them to give him the extension he's earned." At least six teams have expressed interest in trading for Cribbs, according to NFL.com. They are Miami, Kansas City, Oakland, Indianapolis, Jacksonville and San Francisco. At least some of those teams are willing to re-do Cribbs' contract in the short term, a source said. Cribbs' previous agent, Andre Colona, negotiated a six-year, $6.77 million extension through 2012 that Cribbs, a Pro Bowler, has clearly outperformed. The Browns have indicated a willingness to re-do the deal sometime in the future and Mangini said it's "an ongoing process," but Cribbs' side is no longer satisfied with that answer. Question is, what will Cribbs do if the Browns refuse to trade him by Tuesday and won't agree to extend his contract? "I'm going to be stuck," said Cribbs. "I don't know what I'm going to do right now. It will disappoint me tremendously if nothing gets done, and that's no secret. I'll be very disappointed. I play as hard as I can and I give my heart and soul to this team." Cribbs, who said he's letting his agent speak for him on the business side, indicated that walking out and not playing is not in his nature. He contemplated doing it at the start of the season, but decided not to. "I just can't leave my guys on the battlefield without me," he said. "I love playing in Cleveland. I love the fans. That's what ultimately drives me on to play as well as I'm able to play. It would hurt the fans to not see me on the field. I'm not going to play bad because I'm not getting a contract." Cribbs said he hasn't asked for a trade, and technically that's true. Mangini confirmed it. But his representatives did ask permission to seek one and were denied, a source said. Therefore, teams have to go directly to the Browns if they want to get anywhere. But Mangini is believed to be dead-set against trading Cribbs and would have to be blown away to budge. Cribbs is the quintessential Mangini guy -- passionate, dedicated, team player, versatile and a threat in potentially all three phases of the game. "Coach Mangini has been very forward with me," said Cribbs. "We discuss it all the time. He's trying to help me out. You have to just wait for yours, I guess. I'm just trying to be patient and play football, because when all else fails, that's all I know how to do right now is play football." Mangini indicated he's not about to let Cribbs get away. "Josh and I have a great relationship," he said. "I really like him. I like the things that he does. Josh will be a Cleveland Brown." But he will at least listen to the offers. "We take all the calls," he said. "You always listen to everything. You have to. You're always trying to improve the team. In terms of reports of this team or that team, there are a lot of things that are reported that really aren't true." Cribbs, who's seemed down in the locker room this week, admitted that "off the field it weighs on me. On the field, I'm Josh Cribbs. I've got to show up for my team. I'm a captain, I'm a leader. I've got to set an example by my play on the field." Cribbs, who's seeking a four-year extension that would enable him to finish his career in Cleveland, made it clear that's what he wants to do. "Leaving Cleveland would be disappointing," he said. "These fans are tremendous fans. I don't want to play for anybody else. The fans won't be the same, it won't be the same atmosphere." As for Rickert's assertion that the Browns are being unfair by not trading him or extending him, Cribbs said: "That's who I chose to represent me and I do my part on the field. That's how I express myself. As far as the business matter, I'll let my agent speak for me. I just make the final decision on what I want to do with my career." Mangini said the Browns haven't set a timetable for when re-working Cribbs' deal. "What we're both doing right now, Josh and I, are trying to get ready for the [steelers] game Sunday."

I love it when players from bad football teams whine about being underpaid -

a) we can pay you more money and STILL be a bad team

or

b) we can trade you and still be a bad team . . .

put him on the next bus . . .

You know what I notice when I read that?Mangini: Cribbs and I get along great! Honest!Cribbs: I am playing for the fans.

And they talk a lot about Brady Quinn. They didn't overtly say Quinn wants out of here, but they implied it in so many ways, including talking about how Quinn is too nice to demand a trade, and Braylon and K2 showed the blueprint for getting out of Cleveland as malcontents, and maybe Quinn should wait until the season is over before really making some trade demands.

Yes, Braylon and KW showed the way- that way was producing enough to bring back something valuable. Even though Braynlon has stunk for >1 year he retruned a 3rd + 5th with the possibility of a 2nd + 5th - and a few other parts of small value. Trading Quinn for a 4th rounder is worthless. there is a much better chance he becomes a valuable piece for the Browns than a random 4th rounder becoming one.

I don't mean to turn this into a Quinn thread, but Peter King said in an article today that Quinn is gone.

SI's Peter King says Brady Quinn won't be with Browns in 2010

By Mary Kay Cabot

October 17, 2009, 11:39PM

During halftime of the Notre Dame-USC game, Sports Illustrated's Peter King said Brady Quinn will not be back with the Browns next season.

"Whether he goes or not (by Tuesday's trading deadline), he will not be on the Browns in 2010," King said. "I believe they've had enough of Brady Quinn -- Eric Mangini and George Kokinis, the general manager."

Coincidentally or not, King interviewed both Mangini and Kokinis last week for a column on the Browns. Quinn has not asked the Browns to trade him, but made it clear last week he wants to play.
