Just Back From NFL Day at E-W Shrine (1 Viewer)

GridIron Giant and I are just about done with the detailed writeup of Monday's practice, and it should go to press tomorrow.Meanwhile, my 84 toyota made it to san antonio and i had the immense privilege of being on the field for NFL day, the biggest day of the week at the east west shrine game. To the NFL scouts, this is the day that makes the biggest impression, so much so that most scouts leave tomorrow and don't even stick around for the game. There was full speed hitting today and the tension and intensity was clearly in the air as everyone knew this was possibly a make or break day for them.Ill be writing up my personal untrained eye observations, short interviews ( a few questions) with tim day, dontrell moore, and dennis franchione. I also got to talk to John Murphy (director of player personnel for the game) for a while and he gave me his thoughts on who improved their stock the most this week. in addition, I got to talk to the agent for Jonathan Orr, Bruce Gradkowski, and Jason Spitz, and he gave me some nuggets on Orr, my favorite player from the practices. I also have to give shoutouts to the agent for Cooper Wallace and Jesse Mahelona (not at the game), and the agent for Anthony Schlegel and Antwon Burton, two very cool guys - i would be remiss if i didnt give their players a mention. Once again, feel free to ask about specific guys in the thread - i did focus on offensive skill players, but tried to watch at least a little of everything. Ill end up repeating a lot of what i post here in reply in my writeups.

Hi Bloom:Just another "thanks a lot" from everybody here. I really appreciate it.Sort of a dumb question--didn't this game used to be at Stanford? Or am I mistaken?

yep, this is the first year in san antonio.

Scout.com is reporting UCLA QB Drew Olson has been a standout there. That seems contrary to your first report. Being a UCLA fan and having seen most all of Olson's career, my opinion of him is probably monolithic. I don't think he's an NFL QB, but it wouldn't be surprising if he looked like one. Many a Pac 10 QB has duped the scouts then confounded his coaches before retiring in Malibu at the age of 26. I think it's a scam.

I have to say Ive honestly been watching the WRs and DBs more than the QBs in the passing drills, but rarely have I made note of a good throw by Drew Olsen or just an overall heady play in 11 on 11s. Im not saying he hasn't been doing good things, just that I didn't see them if he was, and any time i made a point to watch him, I wasn't impressed. That being said, there were at least 4 different things going on at once in the practices and I couldn't have caught more than 25% of any one players day because of the nature of trying to take in everything instead of being there with an agenda to scout one position or specific players.

How about our Canadian WR - Fantuz?
I just don't see it. He was getting pushed off his routes a lot and just didn't seem used to DBs being physical enough to really disrupt what he was doing. He'll get a shot with an NFL team, but I expect him to end up in Canada.

Quotes from my short interviews on NFL day:West Coach Franchione on who stood out: "I really dont know if I could begin to answer that. So many of them, I didn't know what to expect. They all picked things up well, they all worked hard, they all had a good attitude in the way they approached this. Having done this before, you dont always have as many guys that are this positive."Oregon TE Tim Day on addressing perceived weakness in his blocking: "i feel like i did a good job getting low, using my hands, showing them i can move bigger people."Oregon TE Tim Day on who he looks up to at the TE position: "Justin Peelle, George Wrighster - all oregon guys, theyre the reason im as good as i am now. I like Pollard, Gates, gonzalez - watch how they get out of their routes and how they catch the ball."New Mexico RB DonTrell Moore on his ACL recovery: "A lot of people say youre better in your second year. I know that it feels good now. and things are well. if the the future is brighter in the second year, im looking forward to it."New Mexico RB DonTrell Moore on who he looks up to at RB: "LT, i love LT, Westbrook, they both catch well. I fancy myself on being an elusive guy with hands out of the backfield. I take pride in catching the ball, and I take pride in being versatile and I think those are both things that are assets to my game."

Whitworth from LSU still impressing Bloom?
Very solid. definitely the best OLineman on either roster. He probably won't get in the first because of the depth at the top of the OT class, but whatever team drafts him in the 2nd is getting a stalwart starter at least at RT, if not LT. He's been playing LT in practice. There's really no weakness in his game, he's just considered lower than the top tier because he doesnt have the special athletic ability that could make him a true franchise LT (at least in the eyes of the scouts). Still Im not sure what more you could have asked a guy to do in college. He started EVERY game (51 or 52 i think) in his career at a top DI program (Whitworth apparently did not even miss a practice!), and played against top competition in the SEC for his whole career. Im not sure there is an OT in the draft more ready to step in right away than Whitworth. he also said all the right things this week about the event:
"You can't worry about doing anything but being a football player and showing the things that you are able to do," LSU offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth said. "This is just an extension of the season, except you have a few more NFL people watching you. It shouldn't be anything but an inspiration to practice and perform well."

"It's a stressful week, but you have to understand you are trying to earn a job," said Whitworth, who described the practices, tests and drills as similar to a specialized job fair for a college's graduates.
I see Whitworth as a perfect pick for the Texans or Titans at the top of the second if they go with Bush and Young in the first.Whitworth is the first official Bloom "Smart Pick" of the 2006 draft. A "smart pick" is a guy that just about no matter where he goes or who he goes to, when his name comes off the board, you say "smart pick". I could definitely justify Whitworth as a late first rounder if the top 5 OTs go early, and I wouldn't argue with a GM taking him over one of the top tier if they have problems at the combine or their health/play questions otherwise linger.

Could Moore possibly be this year's Frank Gore? He looked good in the 3 UNM games I saw this year.It was evident that the knee still bothered him and he still looked good.Think he will be a decent back if and when he ever gets back to 100% health....One to keep an eye on

definitely one to keep on eye on simply on the fact that he was back on the field and in good form only 9 months after ACL. I like the Gore comparison in that both guys seemed determined to get everything they can out of themselves. Moore is not as thick as gore though, and really seemed small on the drills with the OL/DL going against each other yesterday. He was getting swallowed up and knocked down easier than you would like to see by D-Lineman. On Monday he was doing a better job running inside than what I saw yesterday.

Yeah, what about Fantuz? Can this guy play? Are the Bears barking up the wrong tree?

Somebody give me the 411 on this guy. Thanks

How about our Canadian WR - Fantuz?
Andy Fantuz

Andy had a good 2010 season in the CFL with 87 catches for 1,380 yards and 6 TDs

The CFL is a passing heavy league, but players from the CFL will always struggle to crack an NFL roster, as the talent difference is hard to overcome.
