Just got a Speeding Ticket from DC in the mail (1 Viewer)

I really want to throw it out. Trust me. I'd love nothing more. But with a wife that has anxiety over everything, can't take the chance. She'd be worried forever after that the cops will come to our house and drag me away.
Does she know about it yet?

In Colorado thee was a kerfuffle when these first came about.  The law here settled that absent in person service there was no obligation to appear or respond.  Before the state came to that revelation there were warrants and my favorite, if the vehicle was in Denver it would get "booted".  Many jurisdictions in these parts started following up with in person service attempts but all had limits on the numbers of attempts they would make before they would drop the matter.  There was some jeopardy if you were pulled over for another offense while the ticket was still active that you would get both tickets.

Me, unless I was in D.C. regularly I would toss it in the trash and not give it a moments thought.  I don't advise that for others, just if it were me.

I'm starting to convince her to ignore it. My dad has a friend who's son is a cop. So I'll see what he says. If she can believe him, then I'm tossing this thing

Not true in California.  I remember getting a speeding ticket (my first, I believe) driving from brunch back to campus on my college graduation day.  The idiot cop wrote my driver's license number down incorrectly on the ticket.  Called and tried to get out of it based on that and they kinda just laughed it off and told me it didn't matter.
When Mr R went to court as a witness, he read the info on the case, and told the prosecutor that the wrong date was on the docket list..  The case got dismissed so they could re-file with the correct info.  When that happened, the dude with the violation pled out.  This sort of thing probably varies by state, court, and violation.

I JUST got one of these f*****' things in the mail dated 11/5/19, and yes, the speed limit in that area dropped by 10 mph in May of this year. The orange signs posted say "Work Zone", but all the "work" seems to be taking place a mile or two ahead - when you see any at all.

DC is seemingly one big "work zone" covered in orange barrels and yellow lane-terminating signage, so it's a never-ending gauntlet and gives the city justification for said money-grab mentioned above. It fills the city's coffers with predatory revenue...  https://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/news/article/21022176/dc-traffic-tickets-the-district-profits-and-residents-pay

Sad thing is I live not too far from that particular camera on 295 and KNOW it's there, but all it takes is a momentary distraction or lapse in attention and boom! They got you because "camera cops" (as I unaffectionately call them) are omnipresent in DC. Some blocks have multiples. They even have them now for STOP SIGN right turns. Apparently the cameras count the 3-4 seconds you're required to come to a complete stop and bang you via mail in a week or so if you're too eager to make that turn.🙄

Don't ignore the ticket, because it WILL double. Since I live here in the DMV and have gotten a few of these nuisance tickets over the years, I've found that rather than pay it right away, you can submit an online appeal (same area you'd ordinarily pay online) with any explanation (ridiculous or sublime) you care to. What you write isn't as important as THAT you submitted something prior to the 30 day deadline. The hopeless bureaucracy of DC's process has a ticket I addressed this way back in June (on Father's Day interestingly enough) still under review. Who knows if/when they'll ever get around to adjudicating it, but if nothing else it buys you some time before having to swallow that big ole $200 bitter pill. Good luck, and Lord knows, you have my sympathies.

"Oof.  You are complaining about going 20+ mph over the speed limit in a construction zone.  They should have fined you twice as much."

Except there is no actual construction work here.  No lane shifts. No traffic cones.  No equipment.  No concrete barriers.  And.  Wait for it.  No workers!  This literally a stretch of road that is perfectly normal in condition.  Except they put up a tiny sign calls it a work zone and lowers the speed limit to 40.  This is literally highway robbery.

I just got one forgoing 11 miles over 100.00!! I was going 38 which isn’t even fast! Not like I was flooring it. I never even saw 25 mph. 100! It was on branch Ave. I’m seriously trying to figure out my best option because 100 seems extremely steep. I live out of state too.
