Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

Wow. How quick is the turn around on replacing them? Was he expected to retire soon?
He was not going to retire with Obama being able to nominate a replacement. Obama will likely give a quick name but the Senate will hold it up as much as possible.

That's what I was getting at. So a potential big win for the Dems, but ultimately a huge mess coming.

Bump for Hillary if Obama can't get it done this year. Can't take any chances with Sanders wth the stakes this high.

Or, god forbid, Ted Cruz.

Not even in the ground and people are already talking about the upcoming battle in getting another Justice in place.

What else are we supposed to talk about? He's an important public figure and none of us knew him personally (or, at least almost none of us).

I feel bad for his family. It's a major loss as he was a very powerful and influential person in this country, but ofcourse people are most interested in how this impacts the future of the government.

That's hardly unique to Scalia. That's every time a Justice dies.
Might be disingenuous but I don't think Scalia is your typical Justice. I think its important to talk about the impact hes had on the Judicial system.

Hes been "the" conservative stalwart forever, I didn't like him as a Justice, being a pinko commie - but he leaves an important gap.

Obama and Biden probably huddling right now figuring out how to sell Obama stepping down as President, Biden taking over and picking him for the SC and Biden announcing he is going to run for reelection.

I'm sure people will talk about that, but it is a very important position to have vacant for any amount of time, no? and appointing a replacement is of tremendous importance to the country?

Ts and Ps to his family, of course. He'd certainly lost a step in recent years. I don't agree with his politics or reasoning often, but he was damn good when he was at his best.

Merrick Garland come on down.

Will be interesting to see if Republicans can stonewall this for a full year.

Be the best thing that ever happened for Dem turnout in November if they do -- would be a huge help for Dems if they don't allow a vote.

Obama should nominate a moderate lefty, with the understanding that Dems will nominate a strong liberal in event of a Dem win in November. Elections matter.

The politics of *next up* will be fascinating...
This. The Game Change/Double Down book for 2016 is going to be an all-time great.

This election was important despite the dearth of good candidates because liberals finally had a chance to recapture the Court after 30+ years in exile. And conservatives had the opportunity to completely dominate it like no other time since the New Deal. Scalia, Thomas, and Ginsburg were unlike to all make it through the next term. Wow. That timeline moved up.

No way Senate Rs let anything happen. Obama needs to move swiftly behind a compromise candidate like Merrick Garland. He might have enough moderate bona fides.
