Justice Scalia Dead (1 Viewer)

I disagreed with him on pretty much everything in his later years, but he should absolutely be honored for his years of service. RIP

Given that he was a strict constructionist the best way to honor Justice Scalia would be a quick nomination, fair and rapid confirmation process and a timely confirmation.

RIP.

He was bad. Made exact statements that came from conservative talk radio in his arguments. But still thoughts to his family.

Ted Cruz @tedcruz

Justice Scalia was an American hero. We owe it to him, & the Nation, for the Senate to ensure that the next President names his replacement.
This is a very polarizing remark. As unfortunate as it is when a conservative judge passes on a progressive's watch, that's how it goes. These are things to think about when you go running to vote for the next President because this is an area they can impact the present and future in this country. Presidents don't do all that much, most of the heavy lifting has already been done but appointing Supreme Court justices is well within their scope and something they all take pleasure in doing when one of them steps down or dies.

There is nothing the Republicans can do to hold up the types of appointees Obama has been giving them. In fact the best thing the GOP can do is allow it to work its natural course. The American people decided Obama was the right person to make these decisions in 2008 and 2012, now respect the democratic process in this country. People made their bed, let them lie in it.

I cannot stop smiling. I feel sorry for his family, but the guy was a complete partisan hack who had no problems going against his own precedent to give the Republicans what they want and let his personal biases against minorities influence his court decisions.

Neither party has taken that approach in a very long time.

Yeah, I'd love for that to be the case. Let's get Sri Srinivasan on the Court. But it's not going to happen. The presidential election just became about something else.

Pretty classless for anyone to write good. I get her you agree with him or not the guy was a giant, a brilliant mind. And I believe a decent man.

Agreed. Obama is still president for about another year. No reason for him not to pick the replacement. If this were a Republican president, obviously Cruz wouldn't be taking that stance.

Doesn't it take the senate to approve the judge? With a republican senate I don't see Obama getting anyone seated. They will try and hold out until after the election, if a democratic candidate wins they will force a moderate pick or just go with 8 judges indefinitely, if a republican wins we will get scalia II.

He was evil incarnate. An oozing blemish on the face of America and a cancer inside the Supreme Court. Still, thoughts and prayers to his family.

Wow. How quick is the turn around on replacing them? Was he expected to retire soon?
He was not going to retire with Obama being able to nominate a replacement. Obama will likely give a quick name but the Senate will hold it up as much as possible.
Bump for Hillary if Obama can't get it done this year. Can't take any chances with Sanders wth the stakes this high.
Yeah can't take a chance on the candidate outpolling Hillary.

And now maybe some folks will understand why I get agitated about being labeled one party or the other. The more the GOP rages on in the House and Senate trying to stop it, the worse they will look and I think that issue could be the thing that will unite those on the Left after Bernie and Hilary are done playing paddycake with each other.

Why?
Ive heard him interviewed a few times. My impression.
So I disagree. The couple people I know who have interacted with him, said he was an ###. And his writings certainly pointed to him being an ###.

Thus I'm not saddened at all by his death. Plus its better for America that he's not on the court.

Don't see how that is classless.
Nothing wrong with what you wrote. But it's classless to write "good." Reminds me of the conservatives who celebrated here when Ted Kennedy died. Not all, but some.

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

I hope we can get a middle of the road appointee. Don't think it will happen, but I would rather see a liberal leaning justice over a religious conservative one.

Yup. More representative of what our country is becoming. Religion is waning here. That's something the right can't or won't recognize.

So Cruz is basically calling upon the Senate to reject ANY Obama appointment and wait until after the election when a Republican might win? Is there any historical precedent for that?

I've been saying for a long time this is the most important election due to the ages of the SC judges. Now do you guys get it?

Obama and Biden probably huddling right now figuring out how to sell Obama stepping down as President, Biden taking over and picking him for the SC and Biden announcing he is going to run for reelection.
I see nothing in the Constitution that says Obama cannot be both President and sit on the court.
