Kamerion Wimbley (1 Viewer)

For Wimbley, Friday marked the start of a rigorous transition for the collegiate defensive end to outside linebacker in the Browns' 3-4 defense. He spent the morning in meetings with some of his fellow linebackers viewing film and learning some dropping techniques. Then, he practiced some of those techniques in the afternoon.

The transition will continue throughout offseason camps, training camp, the preseason and his rookie year. But head coach Romeo Crennel has said Wimbley shows the tools necessary to make a successful switch.

"It's been interesting so far," Wimbley said. "Right now, I feel pretty comfortable just taking it all in and trying to learn as much as I can as fast I can. When I get out there on the field and get the chance to practice it, I'll improve it and, everyday, get better. There are three days of practice (during rookie minicamp) to try to improve that."

Looking at dynasty drafts I think two players are being vastly underrated. Wimbley is one. OLB in the 3-4 isn't the best place for IDP stats, but talent rises to the top in that defense. Savage and Crennel passed on some serious talent to land this kid. I think he separated from Manny Lawson for good reason. I don't think Lawson should be drafted before him in dynasty leagues. Wimbley has more natural LB skills. The transition should be smoother. His ultimate production has more long-term potential too. Oddly, I'm seeing Bobby Carpenter drafted before Wimbley in most leagues too. All three of these guys were drafted to basically play the same position. Wimbley was drafted earlier for good reason.

Wimbley's value is very scoring system dependent. I've seen scouting reports that suggest he could hold up well against the run, but I'm a little skeptical that he can put up the tackle numbers to become more than a marginal starter/depth in standard leagues. And he's unlikely to put up many coverage stats. Like Lawson, he'd have to put up 12-15 sacks in those leagues if he can't top 65 solos. It looks like Carpenter is the more rounded player to me for now. Agree on the long term potential, though.

In my ongoing 16 team rookie draft Carpenter went 1.13 (5% of salary cap), Lawson went at 2.09 (#25 - about 3% of salary cap) and I was able to snag Wimbley at 4.10 at about 1% salary cap, #58. He was the 14th rookie LB chosen.

This is essentially a start 3 LB league and like Wimbley to be a decent LB5 i.e. spot starter/injury fill in down the road. If he delivers more than that in the next four years - excellent.

What got into the guy picking both Carpenter and Lawson so high I will never know...

I am not one for advocating Lawson wayyyy high ... but he is a physical freak of nature ...40-yard dash - 4.43, vertical jump - 39.5"

Edited to add I took him at 3.2 of a 16 teamer ...

What brings Lawson over Wimbley on my board is how I suspect each will be used. I think Wimbley's role will be the typical 3-4 OLB, while I think SF will attempt to make Lawson a weapon on D, a guy that they will move around and look for sacks, tackles for losses and even some INT's. Something more like a Jason Taylor role on the D, a disrupter. I think Wimbley on the other hand, will put up more typical stats as an 3-4 OLB. I think Lawson has more upside from a FF standpoint. He could be the fastest guy on the field in that SF defense.

Wimbley has McGinest to learn from though.....

He does, and on the football field, that's a very good thing.... but McGinest never was a FF stud.... and that's what we're talikning about, right?

Absolutely - but if you can guess which will be his 3 sack games.....
