Please try to find some comfort that those of us here at FBG, tho we may have our differences, have you in our thoughts and wish you all the best. I didn't know this. When Andrew made landfall, it was considered a Category 4. Then a year or two later, after all the data was studied, they changed it to a cat5.MSNBC meteorologist was just asked if there was any chance of significant weakening before landfall. :no: He said that the best case would probably be 140MPH winds. :(

must have come across wrong - i have peoples in New Orleans and McComb, Miss. In no way am i taking glee in the misfortunes of you, yours, and friends of mine.

i have a really bad feeling this storm is going to be much worse than anything ever to hit land. I think those people getting drunk are insane. I'd be getting out of there asap, even if you had to walk.

 
Went out of town to visit friends and family and I didn't keep up with the news. What was once a tropical storm has become an absolute monster -- I can't believe how quickly this thing has grown and how much damage it could cause. God bless anyone within Katrina's path, and hopefully it won't be as bad as some are forecasting.

 
Tourists stranded by the shutdown of New Orleans' Louis Armstrong Airport and the lack of rental cars packed the lobbies of high-rise hotels, which were exempt from the evacuation order to give people a place for "vertical evacuation."

Tina and Bryan Steven, of Forest Lake, Minn., sat glumly on the sidewalk outside their hotel in the French Quarter.

"We're choosing the best of two evils," said Bryan Steven. "It's either be stuck in the hotel or stuck on the road. ... We'll make it through it."

His wife, wearing a Bourbon Street T-shirt with a lewd message, interjected: "I just don't want to die in this shirt."

I have that feeling about the Superdome crowd. :unsure: I am just hoping that the rest I heard about this storm is just plain wrong...or that there is something in The Big Easy that mitigates some of the damage...or perhaps the heretofore unknown "Schwengie Effect" just blows this baby out in the delta.

This is in line with the predictions I heard much earlier. The idea was about the outter bands, moving slowly, slowing down the whole thing. I guess what I am saying is that the doom and gloom I also heard was with this Cat 4 scenario in mind.Come on Schwengie!

 
cnn.com reporting Nola will be spared the worst as the brunt of the storm hits the MS coast. foxnews.com still has doom and gloom headline. :thumbdown: Between the downgrade to cat-4 and the indirect hit, I'm starting to feel confident that the levies will be just enough. Obviously still a destructive thing happening but it might just be "only" as bad as a deadly hurricane hitting anywhere else.

 
Still here. Power going in and out every 30 mins or so and winds are about 35 here with huge long gusts, not just a regular brief gust. 30,000 in the county without power so far, in extreme south part of Mobile County.

The swamplands south of New Orleans did their jobs. 30--40 mph should be knocked off the interior winds by the time the eye passes just east of New Orleans....

Got a slew of family staying up here in Baton Rouge with us. As of 6:45 a.m., still have power and water.

Weather now is bad locally, of course, but could be worse. Bracing for the toughest bit of the storm. Just wanted to get some messages posted before the power went out.

A Cat 4 is plenty bad, make no mistake. But any slowing of wind speed is most welcome.

Getting more info now. Sustained winds are down to 145 mph. Every slight advantage helps. Hoping for a slowdown to 130 or so before the eye passes N.O. Maybe even 120-125 :fingerscrossed:

 
Baton Rouge still online. We have some power outages but my area is hangin' in.In New Orleans the `Dome power is out and they're running on generators. For those that were worried about the `Dome occupants, the govener just announced they've had deliveries of food and water (multiple 18 wheelers) so they'll be okay. But it's gonna get hot woth no AC.Winds gusting to 30 or 40 mph here in BR. Some gusts to 100 south of NO.

Let's not get too cocky...three deaths have already been reported. Nursing home folks who were being moved. While I'm sure it's not due to flooding or wind, the deaths will still be attributed to the storm.

you've obviously never been through a hurricane. i just went through Katrina as she passed my house as a CAT 1 here in S. Florida and it was very, very scary. CAT 4 and 5 are still huge hurricanes capable of mass destruction. this thing could still very well devastate new orleans.
 
Who has the most interesting coverage right now? Fox News has Steve Whatshishame standing outside right now with his goggles on and he's getting whipped around a bit. Probably 50+ MPH winds where he is. He just indicated that the hotel he is staying at has locked their doors, I guess he'll have to crawl under the satellite truck.

CNN just has some dude standing in some light rain in Baton Rouge. BORING.

No power in the French Quarter, I would have to imagine that would also extend outward to other areas of New Orleans.

CNN has someone inside the SuperDome and is indicating that the roof may be starting to pull away! :eek: Lots of leaking apparently and lots of stuff banging around "up there". That place must be a mess. A stinky mess at that. I'm sure the bathrooms are :X by now.EDIT: The reporter is indicating that he can see daylight now when looking up. That's not good. Wind and rain pouring in in spots. And to think the worst is still not even in downtown New Orleans yet. That's not good.

Ed Reams reporting on CNN from the Superdome is saying a part of "the roof has been compromised" and is leaking. Theres still 2 hours before the worst of the storm is predicted to be overhead for them.Those still in The Big Easy are in my thoughts and prayers. :(
