When did you move from Canada?I've got plenty of family to support your new place if you end up in Chicago.
And my sister-in-law works for Apartments.com in Chicago. So maybe we could even find you a place, eh?

Guess who just moved way up in my rankings in a Real Life Hero draft? There was a Saint in New Orleans during the wrath of Hurricane Katrina and his name is Joe Horn, pro-football player for the New Orleans Saints. As I sat in my room at the Hilton Riverside, New Orleans, on Saturday two days before Katrina was scheduled to directly hit New Orleans, I weeped while I phoned home to North Carolina, to speak with my mother and my children. It had been confirmed that my flight was canceled along with that of my husband and 50 others. We all were frantically trying to evacuate. I sobbed as I was told by each rental car company that there were no cars available. I thought I was trapped. But, unbeknownst to me my mother had placed a call to Joe Horn to see if he could help. I hadn't spoken to him in over 20 years. Joe was a friend of my sister's in high school and had always kept in touch with my mother. This wonderful man personally came to pick up my husband and I and arranged for his driver to drive us from New Orleans to Atlanta, Georgia, at his expense, at which point we could fly on to Fayetteville, North Carolina. I'm still amazed at his generosity and I will always be grateful to him. There is truly a saint in New Orleans!! Thank you, Joe Horn. You're my hero!!Aleta Q_______Fayetteville, North Carolina
AWESOME.Here's an interesting email from cnn.com's collection of Katrina emails:

this is good news, and it certainly makes sense for the lake level to be going down -- it's covering a wider area now.... however, I'm not sure it's all that great. High tide will still present problems.from wwltv.com blogJust to reiterate:

Well playedIf I were in the Superdome right now, I would be rushing the field to see if Joe Horn's cell phone was still under the goal post.

Hallelujah!Southwest Airlines should volunteer some planes to FLY those refugees to Houston, and elsewhere.10:58 A.M. - (AP) The New Orleans International Airport has reopened to allow humanitarian flights in and out, officials said Wednesday.
I've said it from the start that we needed to shoot the looters, but it's time to start treating this area like a war zone.

Just heard on the radio that they've turned part or all of the airport into a makeshift hospital & are taking people there for treatment.("they" could be FEMA, ARC, or ?.....missed that part)Hallelujah!Southwest Airlines should volunteer some planes to FLY those refugees to Houston, and elsewhere.10:58 A.M. - (AP) The New Orleans International Airport has reopened to allow humanitarian flights in and out, officials said Wednesday.
That is absolutely dishearteningWell, just got off the phone with friend. Future MIL required to stay as a department head of a local hospital in NO. Anyway, he's saying there have been criminals trying to break in there EVERY night since the storm hit. One lady went outside for just a moment and was robbed at gunpoint. Her husband and son have even tried to procure a boat to go in there and get them out themselves, but the Coast Guard basically told them it's MUCH worse than you are seeing on TV. Basically they'd be dead before they got to the hotel. Said that people who were volunteering to help were being shot and having their boats stolen because they didn't have an armed escort in the boat.
Naturally his gf is freaking out. I believe he's heading to Baton Rouge to take her to be with her step-father and brother during this ####, because she's losing it up here.
Oh, her mother said that she won't be living in New Orleans after this experience.
I've said it from the start that we needed to shoot the looters, but it's time to start treating this area like a war zone.
I hope all those ####### looters die a painful painful death....SOON.It's time to start getting the people out that stayed behind to help. Stop plucking people out of the water and worry about the people that risked their lives on the front end of the storm, because they're starting to be in more danger from the nonsense going on now than they were from the storm.
I don't even think you need to actually shoot people. Just get film of police gunning down "looters" with blanks, and let word of mouth take its course.I've said it from the start that we needed to shoot the looters, but it's time to start treating this area like a war zone.![]()
I dont know how effective word of mouth would be, theres still people in the city trying to get to the superdome because they think its safe and theres food and water there....no communication in the city right now...and how would you get footage out there???I don't even think you need to actually shoot people. NEW ORLEANS – Authorities frantically tried to restore order Wednesday to the devastated city as brazen looters ransacked stores and houses for food, clothing, appliances – and guns. Thieves chased a state police truck full of food. The New Orleans police chief ran off looters while city officials themselves were commandeering equipment from an Office Depot. ERIC GAY/APLooters make off with merchandise from several downtown businesses Tuesday in New Orleans. With law enforcement officials and National Guardsmen focused on rescue efforts, looters are openly ransacking stores for food, clothing, appliances – and guns.Officials tried to balance security needs with saving lives. "We're multitasking right now," said New Orleans Police Capt. Marlon Defillo. "Rescue, recovery, stabilizataion of looting, we're trying to feed the hungry." Gov. Kathleen Blanco appealed to the White House to send more people to help with evacuations and rescues, thereby freeing up National Guardsmen to stop looters. "We need to free up the National Guard to do security in the city," Blanco said. Meanwhile, city officials were taking advantage of the state of emergency to empty an Office Depot, which already had been looted, of supplies they needed for a temporary command center. During a state of emergency, authorities have broad powers to take private supplies and buildings for their use. At 4 a.m., while officials were loading up routers and other technical equipment, Police chief Eddie Compass "starts screaming – he had to chase some looters out that were coming in to loot some more," Defillo said. City security chief Greg Meffert said he was awakened to help form a human chain to quickly unload a state police truck filled with food. "The truck was about to be attacked by looters. ...It had state troopers in it," he said. In the city's Carrollton section, which is on relatively high geround, looters commandeered a forklift and used it to push up the storm shutters and break the glass of a Rite-Aid pharmacy. The crowd stormed the store, carrying out so much ice, water and food that it dropped from their arms as they ran. The street was littered with packages of ramen noodles and other items. Defillo said looters were also taking guns and ammunition. "We're very concerned about that," Defillo said. "We will maintain order. Let me say that. We will stabilize the situation." Gunshots were heard throughout the night in Carrollton. Defillo said an officer and a looter were wounded in a shootout. Defillo had no word on their condition. Three or four others were also arrested, he said. One looter shot and wounded a fellow looter, who was taken to a hospital and survived. Staff members at Children's Hospital huddled with sick youngsters and waited in vain for help to arrive as looters tried to break through the locked door, Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher told the newspaper. Neither the police nor the National Guard arrived. Authorities planned to send more than 70 additional officers and an armed personnel carrier into the city. In the meantime, city authorities were putting a higher priority on rescuing victims and repairing the levee breach that was spilling water into the streets. "One of our fears is if we don't stop the breach, that we will put good people's lives in jeopardy and they would lose theirs, too," the governor said. "We are concerned about essentials. We are asking for more military presence in the city to control the situation better. On New Orleans' Canal Street, dozens of looters ripped open the steel gates on clothing and jewelry stores and grabbed merchandise. In Biloxi, Miss., people picked through casino slot machines for coins and ransacked other businesses. In some cases, the looting was in full view of police and National Guardsmen. The historic French Quarter appeared to have been spared the worst flooding, but its stores were getting the worst of human nature. "The looting is out of control. The French Quarter has been attacked," Councilwoman Jackie Clarkson said. "We're using exhausted, scarce police to control looting when they should be used for search and rescue while we still have people on rooftops." Sen. Mary Landrieu's helicopter was taking off Tuesday for a flyover of the devastation and she watched as a group of people smashed a window at a gas-station convenience store and jumped in. At a drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.

police did a test firing hundreds of blanks driving through areas of New Orleans and not one 911 call was placed in regards to the gun shots.

The whole subject of the looters just makes me sick.I would make a distinction between someone stealing food and bottled water to survive, which is ok in this situation, and someone with a trash can full of stolen jewelry, who needs to be shot.

He isn't talking about human life. He's talking about gun-toting looters. Big difference.I find this lack of respect for human life unforgiveable. Please remove yourself from this board for no less than three years.
Nope, too bad. TF has already set the precedent himself. There is to be no exaggeration, hyperbole or jest regarding the loss of human life in or around this thread. This is a matter of supreme seriousness and is being dealt with in the stiffest manner. I am offended by his statements. He isn't talking about human life. He's talking about gun-toting looters. PP, I don't blame officials at all. I totally agree with you that they need to save lives first. Also, I understand that some people are stealing items neccessary to survival, like food, water, baby diapers and the like. I have compassion for them and I trust their judgement that they truly need this to survive....
I do not condone looting. But when you have limited resources, and you have to make hard choices, I think it's more important to be saving lives than saving property.
I understand you are from NO. I understand how you'd feel having someone loot your home. These are not easy times and you do have my compassion. And these people are scum. I hope the reporter who saw the cops helping themselves in the WalMart got their badge numbers.
BTW, what ever happened to "Looters shot on sight!"?
I totally agree about Nagin and about wanting to work on our city. While new orleans itself doesn't have one specific industry (other than tourism) that thrives - it does support other industries significantly, such as the oil industry and the port of new orleans is huge for getting things up the mississippi river to the rest of the country. If there is any good news - it's that the cities leaders can do things right from the beginning. There has been so much corruption in the city and so much negativity in the recent decades that in a ####ed up way it will be a relief to do things right.I am sure that I am repeating something typed in the last 46 pages (sorry I don't have the time) but has it been considered whether it is even worth rebuilding NO from the financial perspective? It is primarily a tourist and local industry infrastructure. No major corporation in it's right mind HQs in NO.
Where is the money going to be spent? On low ground?
Where will these people go?
I am honestly not trying to be funny..but being serious.
Thank Jesus that Ray Nagin is currently our mayor and not any of the Morials. This city will get built up again - and obviously it will take a lot of time.
I use this comparison very loosely, so please don't interpret me comparing 9/11 to the Hurricane - but as 9/11 inspired people to join the service...I almost want to quit my job and work for the city to help rebuild it. It would give me a tremendous sense of pride an accomplishment to such for a city I love.

Pearl Harbor was bombed.LSU game this Saturday has been cancelled.
I am glad to hear that also, Yankee.Glad to hear they are safe. Finally got a good report about my uncle.
He was one of the people who thought that he could just ride it out. His house was on the NO Border pretty much a few feet below water now I guess. They finally realized that they couldn't and left just in time.
It took him and his wife and dog 14 hours to get out of Louisiana, and they are headed back here to NJ with nothing at all except the car, the clothes they are wearing and anything that was already in the car.
The house is almost certainly gone as is thousands upon thousands of dollars of material possessions. And what's even more ironic is that my uncle is a teacher for the casino industry down there and teaches dealers how to deal.
But, there aren't too many casino's left.
But I'd rather have him safe then any of that stuff.
This is just unreal.
Actually Southern miss was playing TulaneSorry... had to.
Southern Miss game cancelled too.
I think there was another... Tulane?
