KC Releases Sammy Knight - Bump Pollard (1 Viewer)

Ten-year veteran strong safety Sammy Knight, a one-time Pro Bowl performer who ranks third in interceptions among active players, was released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday, ESPN.com has learned.

Interesting that the ESPN story names Pollard as the likely successor when it was Page who rotated in last year while Pollard saw almost all of his time on special teams.

The rap on Knight was his liability in pass coverage. He sacrificed in coverage because he was out of position on run fakes. Of the two potential replacements, Polard is the hitter (SS) and Page is the coverage guy (FS).You have to believe that it's Page that gets the bump here. In hybrid leagues with limited roster spots, Page is where I'm camped. If I've got the wrong horse, sombody throw me a saddle.

Kansas City Star doesn't name a starter this morning -- says it could be one or the other. Of course, it then notes that Greg Wesley may not last the off-season as a Chief either.

One young safety, either Jarrad Page or Bernard Pollard, was promoted to the Chiefs’ starting lineup Wednesday.

The other could get moved up soon.

The Chiefs opened up one starting safety position with the release of veteran Sammy Knight. The 31-year-old Knight was signed as a free agent two years ago and started every game since at strong safety.

The other incumbent safety, Greg Wesley, remains with the Chiefs but they may try to trade him before the draft next month.

The reason Pollard gets the bump, in my mind, is because long term, Pollard is the heir apparent at SS. Page at FS.

Could be. The Chiefs website doesn't say anything either.

I agree with this BTW despite the nitpicking about who gets the call if Wesley sticks. Long term, Pollard looks to be in the best position. Page, if Cunningham can keep enough of his aggressive zone calls in the playbook over Herm Edwards' more schizo Cover-2 ideas, could have very good value as a FS as Wesley did.

one reason many were high on pollard (aside from fact that he was one of best tacklers in class of 06 at any position), was edwards recent history of thrusting young safeties like erik coleman & kerry rhodes into prominent roles early... maybe we were a year early (though i agree this could be better news for page... we don't really know yet)... than again, maybe rhodes is just better... he is better than most safeties in the league, & it may not be realistic to extrapolate from rhodes success a similar career arc & trajectory for pollard?
