Keeper Help (1 Viewer)

Out of this list, who would you keep ? In this league we can sign keepers to 1-3 year deals. The downside of this is that if you sign a player to a 3 year deal and he gets injured or becomes ineffective in the 1st or 2nd year; you can't drop him until the 3rd year (the last year of his contract). Another rule is that if you sign a player to a 1 year deal and he is really good, then you can't sign him for another 1 year. He goes back into the free agent pool on draft day.

So I would like to start a discussion on not only what players to keep (I can keep 2 defensive players) but how long the contract should be (1-3 years).

D. Ryans (LB - HOU)

L. Briggs (LB - CHI)

A. Davis (LB - CLE)

Farrior (LB - PIT)

C. June (LB - IND)

A. Thomas (LB - BAL)

Brackett (LB - IND)

K. Rhodes (DB - NYJ)

K. Kennedy (DB - DET)

W. Demps (DB - NYG)

I am leaning towards Demeco Ryans (best def player in our league based on our format) and either Briggs of Rhodes).

Scoring format:

Tackle Solo (2)

Tackle Assist (1)

Sack (5)

Interception (3)

Fumble Force (2)

Fumble Recovery (1)

Touchdown (6)

Safety (2)

Pass Defended (1)

Block Kick (2)

Here's my first stab:

D. Ryans (LB - HOU) - 3 year deal. It might be a while for the Texans to have a nice offense that keeps their defense off the field.

L. Briggs (LB - CHI) - Not sure, might be on different team next year

A. Davis (LB - CLE) - Hmm, one year at most, but 3 is tempting. I could see him being having some 100+ tackle seasons left.

Farrior (LB - PIT) - Tough one, but would not argue doing 3 years since he's been reliable and will be 35 after the 3 years are up. Don't like Pitt too much for IDP since I've always felt they have no problem finding guys to replace if needed.

C. June (LB - IND) - Not sure, might be on different team next year

A. Thomas (LB - BAL) - Dump back in pool.

Brackett (LB - IND) - 1 year at the most, can't see him being around 3 years.

K. Rhodes (DB - NYJ) - Hmm, might consider 3 year offer. Don't really trust their coach though on this.

K. Kennedy (DB - DET) - Maybe one year if draft pool is thin.

W. Demps (DB - NYG) - No.

Interesting selections though. How long can you wait to make a decision? I really think the next couple of seasons will be heavy on figuring out schemes. Before it was easier since most teams ran a 4-3 defense or tried doing the Tampa-2 in some variation. Now it's a bigger mess than before to sort out.

For DBs, I would probably avoid making deals on if possible since they're easier to replace year-in-year-out and too much risk to sign long term (i.e. Roy Williams is an example). I think long term deals are suitable for LBs and stud DEs.

Answering open-ended questions like this are really difficult without knowing the texture of the league. The scoring system information is nice but how long they're routinely signed, what position is most valued, how much draft value do you have to invest to get a good one, how difficult is it to find a decent replacement, etc?Still, it seems pretty clear in this case that since you can lock up only two players that you lock up the two stud youngsters (Ryans and Rhodes) to 3 year deals. Both should remain in their current roles over that time frame. Brackett and Davis are considerations but I'd rather have Rhodes as it appears there'll be plenty of LBs available in that tier. The futures of Briggs, June, and Thomas won't be settled until March. None are clear studs in any scheme.
