Keeper League Draft Rules? (1 Viewer)

Our league of 10 years is finally migrating from 100% redraft to allowing a single player keeper. Each year, we have either a 12 or 14 team league, depending on interest. There are about 8 hardcore regulars, with 4 - 6 that need recruiting (some brand new, some oldtimers). We use Yahoo to manage draft, traditionally it has been randomly set serpentine style.

Here are my thoughts on initial draft ordering, but would like your input into it:

1)If you designate a keeper, you will not draft until after those coaches who decide not to designate keepers (or new coaches).

2)Keepers must be designated two weeks before the draft. The random draft order for those who don't designate a keeper will be set one week before the draft.

4)The first round draft order for keepers will be set according to last years playoff standings (teams not making playoffs go first, teams bounced out of playoffs 1st round draft next, etc etc...

If you finished 9th, you draft 1st.

If you finished 10th, you draft 2nd.

If you finished 11th, you draft 3rd

If you finished 12th, you draft 4th

If you finished 13th, you draft 5th

If you finished 14th, you draft 6th

If you finished 8th, you draft 7th (made playoffs, loser to the 4th seed game)

If you finished 7th, you draft 8th (made playoffs, loser of 3rd seed game)

If you finished 6th, you draft 9th (made playoffs, loser of to 2nd seed game)

If you finished 5th, you draft 10th (made playoffs, loser of 1st seed game)

If you finished 4th, you draft 11th

If you finished 3rd, you draft 12th

If you finished 2nd, you draft 13th

If you finsihed 1st, you draft 14th

5)Rest of draft will be conducted in the normal, serpentine manner. Again, Round 1 will consist of first picks being determined by random (for those who don't keep) -- and then by last season (for those who do keep).

What do you guys think? Any other systems you employ that you like better?

12 team league that has been running for 9 years...

2 keepers allowed per team (but they cannot be the same position... cant keep rb and rb..)

Keepers retain their original draft position but if kept move up 3 rounds the following year (if drafted in the 8th, they would be your 5th round keeper)

Free agents that are kept become your 12th round keeper

2 Free agent keepers become 12th and 11th rounders

After many years of the above, I find that a lot of the top rbs are kept (either through free agents and then held for many years) or middle of the road and held.. This creates a serious advantage for people (one guy this year has Steve Smith and L Johnson as keepers.. then had the 12th pick and grabbed moss and owens...)

The above is part of the keeper territory... we may implement a point per rec model to improve wr scoring and have (this year) bumped up keepers to 10th round free agents as the latest..

I joined a 2nd league 3 years back that is a re-draft and I like that model better.. Everyone starts from scratch and (outside of the draft order that is selected out of a hat), its a fresh start for all..

One keeper? What are you going to do with the extra one minute that you save from drafting?
I agree......keeping only 1 player defeats the purpose of a keeper league.IMO, the best part of a keeper league is those owners that draft well / or manage their roster afterward so that they can trade away excess talent to other teams and get something in return for their efforts.

With only 1 keeper, you will lose this aspect of strategy.

League voted to start slow this year, (allow just one keeper). We will then make it 2 following year, 3 the year after. We have a lot of newbies who are used to the redraft approach who need to be sold on the aspect of joining up the keeper league...

I see you point on the excess talent/tradng aspect of all of this...

I think we have created the perfect league we keep 2 guys for 1 season only, after that season they are put back in the draft. The players kept keep their draft position from the season earlier. Free agents become a 7th round draft choice. Start 2 qb , 12 team league 16 man rosters. Qb's are as important as RB's. we start 3 wr's, it is a tough league. All pretty good players that try every season.we have the same formula for draft choice's, only teams are allowed to choose their draft position, makes it a lot more fun.Try start 2 qb's league if you want a real challenge for your next season

I'm in the 4th year of a 12 team keep 2 league. Keepers will be slotted 2 rounds lower than their draft position, no limit on how long you can keep a player. This year we instituted a draft order change so that the best non-playoff team will have the #1 pick ( to promote keeping up with your team after the playoffs are out of reach. )

I really like this system because the top 2 rounds of talent are available year after year, so it doesn't take several years to rebuild to competitive. It rewards owners that draft well, especially late. And with offseason trading, a team that has stockpiled keeper quality players can further improve their draft position by moving keepers for draft picks.
