Keeper League Drafting (1 Viewer)

I usually do 5 fantasy football leagues every year.  My favorite is a 16 team, $400 entry league with deep benches but a close second is my 12 team, standard scoring, keeper league.  We are going into year 12 with only 3 owners having changed over the course of the league.  This will be year 6 of keepers.  You can only keep up to 2 players.  A player can be kept for the round ahead of where they were drafted the year before and you can't keep a player drafted in round 1 from the year before.  A keeper has to have been drafted, and have to be on a roster for the entire year so you can keep a player that you traded for from another team.

Since it is a keeper league, we are allowed to trade future draft picks.  I am typically one of the better teams every year having reached the playoffs 10 out of 12 years.  I have never won and have only made the championship game once.  I have had an undefeated season (lost in the championship game) a 1 loss team, and a few 2 loss teams.  Last year, I started 2-6 despite a roster with Julio Jones, Todd Gurley, Mark Ingram, and Eric Decker.  Every week it seemed I went against the high scoring team for the week.  Once I was eliminated from playoff contention, I traded away my team to owners who were contending.  I ended up with an extra 2nd, 3rd, and two extra 4ths this year.  I pick third so I have 8 of the first 51 picks this year.

I am keeping Todd Gurley for my late 2nd and Mark Ingram for my 8th.  Antonio Brown is a being kept as are 7 RBs total.  I am fairly certain that Odell Beckham is going first.  I think David Johnson is going second.  Obvious strategy tells me that I should take Julio Jones and not think twice about it.  The problem is, is that I am thinking twice about it.  I am very high on Lamar Miller this year and think his upside is that he could potentially finish as the RB1.  I think there may be more value taking Lamar Miller over Julio to lock in 3 likely RB1s and potentially the top 3 scoring RBs.  I will be set at both RB spots and flex.  I pick 4th in the second round (a pick I traded for last year) and most of the following WRs should be available when I pick: Alshon Jeffery, Amari Cooper, Brandon Cooks, TY Hilton, Brandon Marshall, Demaryius Thomas, and Keenan Allen.  Now, if I thought that Eddie Lacy, CJ Anderson, or Lesean McCoy would be there when I pick in the 2nd rd, I would likely take Julio or Beckham, whichever was available and take one of those RBs as my RB3.  If OBJ and Julio go 1 and 2, I take David Johnson and go WR at least my next 2 picks.

Gronk and Jordan Reed are being kept so my plan would try to draft 2 more RBs, 4 WR, and a QB after my 5th rd pick.  Had the consensus top 2 TEs not been kept, having so many early picks would have afforded me the luxury of maybe taking one early.  The problem is that they are being kept and I feel TE 3-12 are relatively close in value, Greg Olson being the possible exception.  I definitely do not script my drafts because I always let the draft fall to me.  I would rather dominate a position than reach for a position that is not complete yet.  I am not sure if Andre Luck is going to be kept (3rd rd) but I would take him or Rogers (ineligible to be kept) with my early 3rd rd pick if either are available.  5th rd would be the earliest that I would think QB otherwise.

I'd love to hear other opinions on what you would do given the choice between the WR and RB at pick 3.
