Browns | Winslow thinks some coaches are holding the team back

Published Mon Sep 18 11:20:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Tom Reed, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns TE Kellen Winslow criticized some of the team's coaches Monday, Sept. 18. Winslow believes some of the coaches are holding the team back. He added, "I don't mean to try to go behind (the coaches') backs or whatever, but we're 0-and-2. We have nothing to lose. Let's go. Let's air it out. Let's run the ball. Let's make plays. Let's be exciting." Winslow also is not sure why he's not on the field in some situations. He was on the sidelines on several third-down packages Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. " I just don't understand why I'm not on the field sometimes. (It's) very frustrating. We're losing, and I'm not on the field. I just don't get it."

So Winslow is frusterated, doesn't like losing, is a competitor & wants the ball. Maybe needs a little Coaching on when to open mouth & what to say when he does.

All in all though, sounds like just the kind of player most Coaches would want.

Winslow has a ton of talent... but I really don't think most coaches want their players openly criticizing them and second guessing their decisions. Passion and wanting to win is great... but that can be done in conjunction with putting the teams needs and interests ahead of your own.

You want someone with energy, so long as it's not disruptive... and it motivates him to back it up, and not look stupid.

WKNR sports talk radio in Cleveland covered this extensively, as they had the audio of Winslow talking about this. The radio guys all completely supported Winslow on this one. They also said that many in the Browns locker room are REALLY losing faith in OC Maurice Carthon - Winslow was just bold enough to speak out.

Nobody start Winslow next week. THey gonna make him block all day long.
That would probably generate a TON of horrible PR for this club because many fans are upset about the playcalling right now. I doubt we will see it. The better play for the Browns' staff is to give him every opportunity - throw to him all day next week - dare him to make plays. If he suceeds, everyone is happy. If he fails, the Browns made their point as well to him.

Agree...which is what the coaches should do, and which is what the opponent will think the coaches should do, which brings us back to square one. Cle coaches thinking what the other are thinking about their thinking, decide to keep him in for blocks. :loco:

Lets air it out. Lets run the ball.kid still has a lot to learn, but what is he talking about here? His dad eas a class act and must get sick everytime his sons mouth open. Imagine him and Antonio Bryant on the same team, how would you like to be that coach or QB?

Um... don't have to time to fish for Winslow Sr quotes... but he's become much less than a class act the past few years...

Let's breakdown Kellen's quotes:"I don't mean to try to go behind (the coaches') backs or whatever" - Anytime you have to qualify a comment, you are doing exactly what you say that you are not going to do."Let's go. Let's air it out. Let's run the ball." With logic like this, he has a future in politics."I just don't understand why I'm not on the field sometimes." My initial response would involve the word "motorcycle". But, I will be nice and not take that any further. As if living in Cleveland wasn't bad enough, now you have to listen to this knuckle-dragging, egotistical, self-righteous, spoiled little girl on a weekly basis. :pokey:Good luck against the Ravens.

Well, like I say, class sucks and I dont really have much respect for people who think its a good thing. You can point to many great leaders of men in history who were far from what modern "men" think is classy.

Show me someone who is classy, and I'll show you someone who is more concerned about the image he puts forth to people than he is about fighting for a just cause. I don't have one ounce of respect for that.

Are you deliberately obtuse, or does it just sorta fall that way?

How much of a 'just cause' can you have when you're playing football for a living? He isn't fighting for anything other than more playing time.

You know what? I actually agree with the toy soldier. The play calling sucked and Carthon has the IQ of a houseplant. The deep ball has been there and they've thrown it twice in 2 games, every pass to Winslow is a 5 yard seam or slant. RD is an inside runner that they are running outside way too much. With Terrel Smith, one of the best blocking FB's in football has been in about 30% of the time on 3rd down. Charlie Frye has shown nothing but poise under center but he can only audible if he counts 13 players on defense. Frye kinda spoke out himself last week when he said he was told he's not supposed to scramble as much, but he's gonna do it anyway if he thinks it will help spark the team. Carthon has a little Butch Davis in him and I'll be suprised if he's still OC after week 5.

It is possible to be classy and fight for a just cause. Just because someone throws people under the bus or beats his own chest does not mean he is more motivated than the person that quietly gets the job done. Using your logic, you would consider Terrell Owens more of a winner than Marvin Harrison. That's pretty stupid.

Having to watch the Browns week in and week out I will defend Winslow. The play calling is terrible. I have said it before and I will say it again for those who don't have to watch how bad they are weekly: You do not run the ball on 3rd and 8 when you are down by 20.

Use the ignore feature. It was invented for posters like BGP.

Winslow has thus far proved to be the best weapon on this offense other than possibly Frye. Edwards can't seem to catch the ball, and Dropcutt never could. They didn't even look Winslow's way except maybe 1 time in the first half. This team has proven to be a team of 2 halves in both games, their coaching, playcalling, and playing have been terrible in the first half against both Cincinnati and NO, and the second half has been much better. You have to put this on the coaching, its up to them to have them playing well for the entire game.

I have to agree with Browns rule.. And I don't think you can blame a guy for wanting to win, he could maybe use a lesson or two on how to handle the media but its no big deal IMO

Just throw him the damn ball

I agree here. You can say what you like about him opening his mouth to the media but he is just say what everyone in Cleveland knows.Carthon's offense is just pathetic. The first week we’re running sweeps with a backup fullback on 3rd and 1 and this week Winslow is off the fields on 3rd downs and the Browns are in max protect. It’s a joke. Sending out 2 WRs on 3rd and 7 and keeping everyone else in to block is not going to work.Winslow has shown that he is the most consistent play maker the Browns have. I have yet to see someone take him down one on one and there is no LB that can cover him. Leaving him on the bench on 3rd downs is just ######ed.Bottom line is that Winslow is right. I can only hope Carthon gets fired ASAP.

Can any Browns homers shed light as to why Winslow is listed as questionable (knee) this week? ***Official*** Game and injury threads didn't indicate any issue with Winslow during the game.

I read the other day that hes getting mild swelling off and on in his knee but he plans to play thru it.
