Kelly Washington Baltimores fast rising WR.... (1 Viewer)

I remember Kelly Washington being a very talented WR coming out of Tennesee way back. He had a serious neck injury that caused him to fall in the draft and the Bengals took a shot on him. Fast forward to 2009 and after 2 weeks he has appeared to emerge as a legit WR on a fast rising Flacco led offense.

I managed to pick him up this week in numerous dynasty leagues for a song (BBid).

What is everyones thoughts on this possible deep sleeper emerging as a WR2 for the Ravens? Homers please chime in too if you have some usuful info.

Meh is right, this guy has had plenty of chances.

However, I will say this ...:

I was on the sidelines for the UT/LSU game years ago (2002?) and I watched a freshman named Kelley Washington absolutely blow up LSU for 250+ receiving yards. He was electric. His own coaches were wide-eyed. I have never seen a more dominant WR performance- college or pro- since that day. I believe his neck injury was a few weeks later otherwise he was Heisman bound.

Back to now, Kelley is not going to provide anything remotely useful in fantasy football unless Mason or Clayton get hurt. And even then he'll find a way not to deliver.

I was at that game also as I was a sophmore at UT at the time. Unbelievable!

That being said he was like a 21 year old freshmen coming in to college football. If he hasnt peaked by now, it isnt happening.

oof...didn't realize the dude is 30.

i'm not entirely sure he is without real value. baltimore seems very content to throw the ball in this new offense. has mason shown anything yet? he was out pretty much all of the training camp with his retirement. he's come back and had some very meh numbers. washington, at 30, has played special teams most of his career and has a lot of tread on the tires. mason, at 35, has played perhaps too much at this stage in his career.

flacco can thrown a deep ball. they like to throw now. washington has speed. coaching staff talked about him a lot over the offseason "getting it" and showing improvement. who is ahead of him really?

he's a great sleeper with derrick mason possibly in very real decline.

Yeah, he played minor league baseball for four years before attending Tennessee. He was actually 22 when he played his first game as a true freshman.

So far he's been probably their third WR target, which means not a whole lot of looks since Heap and the RBs are getting their share this year, too. But they seem to like his size and hands and run some plays every game for him in the middle of the field. When he scored this past Sunday, he was the beneficiary of the Ratbirds strong running game, faking a block on a run look and then racing past a secondary which had bit completely.

In the fist two games he is fifth in targets per game on the team and has half the targets of Mason and Clayton. The difference is he has caught every target so far. I don't see that as sustainable, so if his good play so far does not earn him more targets he won't hold much value. He is a wait and see if he earns more playing time before I pick would pick him up.

i think he has a great chance to put up some numbers against the Browns this weekend who are having trouble filling the nickleback spot.

i'd recommend starting him if you need a fill in reciever.

Yup. I actually played in the same area as him in high school way back when. He wasn't even the best guy named Washington on his team at the time. There was another guy, John Washington, who won all the all-area awards. I think Kelly was like 2nd team or something. Pretty amazing how things have changed. He comes back to town from time to time. A buddy of mine who bounces at the big bar in town says he hates it when he comes because he expects this start treatment in small town VA.

Balt. 2nd leading receiver for 2nd week in a row...5-66 today, statwise, he is looking startable as a WR3 or flex in PPR lately.

I didn't see the game - how did he look today?

He looked great. He caught everything thrown to him and had YAC. He was the guy in third an long situations. Didn't see any redzone looks tho.

Very solid game for him indeed. The Ratbirds may not have that one guy who scares you to death but having Washington in the lineup means that there's a lot of guys you have to cover. And Flacco is doing a great job reading coverages and finding the open guy so far.
