Kenneth Darby - called up from practice squad (1 Viewer)

(yes i know i could have delved and found some July threads on Darby but with all the new things happening in TB, i felt this was okay to start a new thread)

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpag...NFL&id=4434

with Minny looking like they will be holding onto both Mewelde and Chester, what are the chances that Darby could get a look as a feature back in Tampa sooner or later?

i know he was a late round pick and cleared waivers to go on PS, but...

Graham and Pittman are merely serviceable journeyman-like backs not worldbeaters AND Darby by most accounts looked very well in camp and preseason and was a surprise cut to most folk here

thoughts?

I think Darby will get to carry the ball in the next couple of weeks and show he can play. He could be a sleeper now that cadillac is out for the next year or two and probably split time when he does come back. I have Darby in a dynasty league and waiting to see what will happen later this season.

No offense, but what in God's creation makes you think he will jump from the practice squad to having an impact in Tampa? Graham has 3 TD in about 25 carries the past 2 weeks, he seems fine and Pittman will catch balls out of the backfield and play on most 3rd downs. They also were trying to make trades as well as call folks like Corey Dillon...this was their last idea it would appear.

he didn't use the word "Impact" ... he just said he may get to carry the ball somethey tried to get Dillon, Moore, and Chester because they are 3-1 and are desperate to make a run now ... now that all those have fallen thru, they will go with what they have for now and with the way Darby was running in preseason (yes i know against 2nd/3rd teamers blah blah blah) why not see what he can do on a series or two a game in relief of Graham

when they are down by 2-3 TDs in the 4th this week, may be a good time to get a look

 Bucs are trying to win football games here. I don't think they have time for undrafted rookie rejects.

If that guy carries the ball, one team better be down 30 points.

This will be something everyones watching the rest of the year. Darby could get a chance later in the year.

I'm also wondering... is Willie Parker, undrafted, considered a reject???The guy will likely get some carries in spelling a back. If he does something with them, he'll get a bit more and then who knows... You can't ignore a player because he was drafted in the 7th rd.

They had an open spot at RB and coudn't trade for one so they filled it with a practice squad player. They didn't have many if any other options especially for this week.

 The fourth quarter of the Carolina game should show that Pittman and Graham are capable of carrying the running game at this point. Darby is merely depth.

I see Pittman as the primary ball-carrier, Graham in the red zone, and Darby as a third-down back.

Link

Darby has practiced primarily as a special teams player and has seen little backfield action this week. With RBs Earnest Graham and Michael Pittman expected to carry the load, Darby is primarily an insurance back for now, but he could receive an opportunity if either of them struggle.

Ever heard of Samkon Gado. He had a huge impact with GBY off the practice squad a few years ago. Willie Parker was undrafted, there are gems out there...its a just need to find.

If the Bucs liked Darby, I dont think we'd be seeing their name come up in trade talks for Minnesota backs, and now Bell.

:censored: :jawdrop: Darby had a lot of trouble with the offense, and has a bad fumbling problem. Doesn't sound like a good combo.
Dont get me wrong, I think they see potential there for the long haul, and maybe he plays a role in the future - but their actions right now tell me that they dont expect him to be a big part of their plans this year. Of course injuries could make it so they have no choice.

Is that the dude that sang that Wishing Well song?
Yeah. After failing to get another mindless pop song to hit on the charts like Wishing Well he called in a favor to his former mentor and high school football coach Shecky Gruden, John Gruden's illegitimate half-brother. Shecky convinced John to give him a shot on the practice squad. So, after releasing the former lead singer for Oingo Boingo, the Bucs added Darby.

:lmao: I'm sorry, he was one of the last picks of the draft, and waived after pre-season.

Bloom its all about depth, the Bucs are very high on Darby. They were shocked as reported in early threads that a player of his talent was availible in the seventh round. Darby was a stud in College untill his last year when the death of his father and nagging injuries took their toll. Darby is in a good situation, however Gruden runs a very complicated offense. Chucky has shown a great deal of loyalty to his players and the decision was made to keep the most experianced backs on the active roster. Darby very well could showcase his skills this year and become the feature back for Tampa Bay in the future. This was the back the Packers could have used rather than Finger Tip Tackle Jackson and DWINN, "if" Darby gets his shot he will far exceed expectations and the performance of both Turds wearing Green and Gold.

I agree that he's got a shot long term - I came off a bit harsh on him at first and clarified a few posts later that I think they like him, just not for this short term situation.

Darby went from pretty much dead weight to a guy who might get a few carries and now could have an outside chance to put up some numbers if he plays well or TB has more RB injuries. He sees a slight bump in value but nothing more than that at this point.

This is all really inaccurate.
http://www.tbo.com/sports/bucs/MGBDHH43P2F.htmlI can not find the quote attributing to Gruden saying he was "shocked", so it may well be more than inaccurate, for now its untrue. I swore I saw it, but I could be, and the way I see it now I am wrong.

Edit: The accurate statment: RB Kenneth Darby, seventh round (246th overall)

Darby, the final selection by the Buccaneers in this year’s draft, was the only offensive skill-position player taken by Gruden, who was more than happy to nab the playmaking running back off the board. His addition should provide the Buccaneers with another set of viable legs in the offensive backfield.

“Ken Darby is the number-three rusher in Alabama history,” Gruden said. “He took a step backwards in his senior year for a lot of reasons: the death of his father, he had some nagging injuries. But as a junior, he was brilliant at times as a runner. To get a guy with that kind of production at the end of the seventh round is something we are excited about.”

Thanks Capella!!

No way Darby even sniffs the field unless Graham or Pittman get banged up. Even if one of them do get hurt, I'd say it's more likely that we grab someone off of free agency instead of giving Darby those touches.

Those coach-speak quotes are from April. They cut him in August. Then they tried to trade for a RB this week. Not really hard to figure out what they think of him. But you can continue to dangle in the wind if you wish.

Darby = Graham 4 years ago

The Bucs obviously like him...they used a draft pick on him and have decided to keep him on their practice squad instead of just getting rid of him...exactly the same thing that they did with Earnest Graham every year until he finally made the active roster

Hobbes nails it. Darby is not the answer right now...but Graham is nothing special either. They both looked about the same in preseason. The difference is experience. That's it.

everyone remembers willie parker and gado as they have made a great story. now on the flipside there has been a million+ players that have been called off the practice squad or picked up off FA when teams get injuries and depth problems that just fill that need- depth. i can't count how many good 'coachspeek' comments made on the pats bam childress last year and he couldn't do jack with the pats superior Wr core of florida rejects infront of him last year. i'd be surprised if the bucs thought darby would be anymore than graham or what the had in stecker years ago.
