Kenny Phillips, S - NYG (1 Viewer)

I just drafted Phillips pretty high in our Rookie draft.

I wouldn't change my mind on the selection, but am looking for some opinions on his situation and skill. The staffers do not seem to high on Phillips, as they have him as the 38th DB in redraft.

Will Phillips not jump right into the starting lineup in Gibril's spot? Gibril was the #6 DB in weekly average last year in my league.

Thoughts on Phillips and how he will do in the short term and long term?

Short term I would worry about a rotation with Butler and Knight. What I dont understand is why they would put a 2nd round tender on Butler if they dont plan on using him path forward. Also, with the complaints that their safeties were "meh" in coverage, why pay Knight, who while smart, is very slow and was run out of KC due to that exact reason two years ago ...Long term I think Phillips should be fine.

I would add that if Phillips is paired with Knight, I would think that Knight is guaranteed to be the primary run stuffing safety with Phillips having more coverage duties. I mean, isnt this why they got Phillips, to have a safety that can cover the TE and play center field?

I would think his value is going to be higher in big play vs. tackle heavy leagues.

Should have taken a LB :football:

Personally I wouldn't have reached to grab a S, with so many other 'quality' players on the board. Until Knight is on the team, I agree they will probably use some sort of rotation, or let Kenny play the pass more than the run.

But if he pans out, he should be a solid IDPer. Although what I found last year was that there are always players available at that position on the WW.

I have the best LBs in the league. I didn't need one. Is Demeco Ryans, Jon Beason and Tatupu a good corps of LBs?

What "quality" players are you referring to? With Gibril Wilson leaving the team, that leaves a big hole and the Giants targetted Phillips for that role. I value a 3rd DB to play that flex spot than picking some other player who won't even see my fantasy starting lineup.I am in "win now" mode.

I liked the pick for that reason. I would've taken him 3.01 if it makes any difference.

If like the pick due to your good LB'ing core, but even though you are in a "win now" mode I think it is tough to expect rookie safeties to contribute much in IDP.

Players like Kerry Rhodes, Laron Landry, Roy Williams, Sean Taylor, Sean Jones have contributed in their first years. With Phillips hopefully being plugged into Gibril Wilson's role, then Phillips does have an opportunity to contribute right away. The main reason I took Phillips at 2.09 is because my team does not have many holes to fill at the present time. I took the chance to shore up that position with my pick of Phillips. I wanted to get another top DB and am hoping that Phillips turns into that. I also wanted Dan Connor without a doubt because I needed insurance on Beason potentially moving from MLB. My thought was that Phillips would not be available on my pick in the 3rd round, which is correct with Vernon saying he would have taken him.

With your WR corps, maybe you could have added some potential depth? Manningham/Simpson/Caldwel/DeSean Jackson .. not to mention Lavelle Hawkins and Dexter Jackson, if you were ready to reach a little anyway.

2.09 is way too high to take Phillips or any other free safety, especially in a fairly deep draft like this one.
Considering he would have been taken at 3.01, it was the right time if I wanted him.

I think it's a bit early. I feel for ya as he's a guy that could go "too early" by someone else and then you're just stuck without him. I'd have waited til at least the 3rd though.I've heard a bit here and there about Knight and the sentiment is that Knight's no lock to make the team. Motivation? Reality? We're stuck guessing which it is.

IF IF IF Phillips is plugged into Gibril's spot and can get as many points as Gibril, that would be a little too perfect.

IMO The Giants know they need to fix their LBers some. Kawika is gone. Kiwi was fairly good just before he got hurt but not so good in the beginning. I really think this is one of Coughlin's agendas for the offseason.

Do you think if they have more effective LBers will that affect the numbers from that S spot?

Good pick and you've explained why you had to snag him earlier than most other drafts. Don't worry about the haters, you got the best Safety from the NFL draft. Barring a learning curve issue, Phillips should fill G. Wilson's spot soon. Butler is sufficient, but nothing special and Knight has seen his better days.

Additional data point...

I traded up to take him @ 4.05 in a start 4DB IDP league.

2.01 Long

2.07 Lofton

3.01 Dizon

3.02 Rivers

3.08 Mayo

3.10 Conner

3.12 Gholston

4.03 Harvey

4.05 Phillips

4.08 Groves

4.10 Gooden

Per this:

http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football...s_nflready.html

Phillips is backing up M. Johnson at FS and breathing down his neck. James Butler is starting at SS with S. Knight behind him.

S. Knight and Phillips are learning both FS and SS.

"Merritt said that right now James Butler is the starting strong safety and Michael Johnson is the starter at free safety. New additions Sammy Knight and Kenny Phillips will be learning both positions." “Once the season comes along we’ll start to weed it out and put the guys in their position,” he said, “but right now we’d like for these guys to learn it all, both positions.”

is taking Phillips as the #11 S (my league seperates S and CB positions, must start 2 of each, 16 teams) a reach.

After the top guys were gone... I figured to go w/ the most current upside.

Definetly not a reach. FBG's has him ranked as the 17th best DB (S and CB combined) and 12th best safety for dynasty purposes. He has extremely high upside (top 8) and will be a bargain in the rookie drafts. If you can get him late 3rd or after in a rookie draft then you are getting a player that will be a starter on your fantasy team for the next several years. IMO that beats grabbing the 12th best WR or a project RB who you will drop next year.

So grabbing him as the 11th best safety is a good pick IMO.

In a current Zealots draft, I'm on the clock at 4:09 and very close to nabbing Kenny Phillips. The only other player I'm considering is Andre Caldwell. Based on where I'm seeing Phillips ranked, 4:09 would be excellent value. Would you guys agree?

I would take KP...

Yeah, at that spot in Zealots drafts, that's a fine value.I am thinking that he is going to be a free safety, tho, and may wind up being a better football player than fantasy player.

I wound up taking Phillips. He was the BPA, IMO. I can only hope he puts up number close to what Gibril Wilson put up.

sorry for bumping an old thread here, but I was curious is anyone has any insight when we might see Phillips crack the starting lineup. When he's in the game he just always seems to be around the ball. I hate to say it, but could Monday night against my Browns be a good time?

After the bye would've been nice. Probably stuck waiting for an injury or complete collapse by one of the starters now.

That day is coming tomorrow it seems. I hope he does well. I believe the Eagles are about middle of the road as a matchup for DB's so far this year. From Roto...LATEST NEWS - November 8Giants rookie S Kenny Phillips will start in place of injured James Butler (knee) Sunday night in Philadelphia. Michael Johnson will move to strong safety, allowing Phillips to slide into his natural free safety spot. Phillips is calling the occasion a "coming out party," and the impressive rookie is a good bet to make good on that prediction.

I could see good amount of tackles in this game for Phillips. And possibly chance for a big play if the Eagles/Mcnabb try and challenge him like I think they will.
