Kevin Burnett now with the first team at WILB (1 Viewer)

With apologies for the new thread, I thought this deserved its own note.

Kevin Burnett is now running with the first team alongside Stephen Cooper. He was already working with the ones in the nickel. If this holds, and it seems likely to since the Chargers have seen Tim Dobbins for three years now so they know what they've got there, it should send Burnett screaming up the rankings.

I wouldn't expect Donnie Edwards numbers necessarily -- Cooper should still be stiffer competition than guys like Randall Godfrey were -- but Burnett has LB3++ upside in an every-down WILB role.

Full story in SD Union Trib today.

Does this in any way affect Cooper's projections?

I think Burnett is easily the best option the Chargers have had in the middle of the field in the nickel since Cooper entered the lineup. Most of Cooper's nickel value comes in pass rush and coverage big plays, so it may not be a huge hit. Still, if Burnett plays as well as I think he can (and have hoped for three years now -- so take this with its appropriate background), I think Cooper's upside is limited to LB2 now. Don't see him approaching 95 solos with a competent every-down WILB.

I was going to point out the Burnett (for the single Sea preseason game) looked like the best LBer on the field. But he seemed to mix it up alot with Dobbins on the ILB/IRB a lot. When you guy mentioned Dobbins as being a starter and Cooper being out as the other starter... I wasnt sure what to make of it, kind of bummed me out. This is good news to me.
I don't think anyone mentioned that Cooper wasn't starting -- he wasn't dressed for the game.Chargers shift their backers to the strength of the offensive formation. The preseason game had Burnett to the weak side, with Dobbins playing Cooper expected strong inside spot. All indications are now that it'll be Cooper at his usual SILB spot and Burnett at WILB.

Heard Cooper on Sirius yesterday and he confirmed he will be starting at the SILB spot. I didn't catch why he didn't play in the pre-season game, but there is nothing to worry about.

Nice... great news. Burnett is a guy I added in a number of leagues in the offseason and really thought he was a big sleeper this year, but was disappointed that Dobbins was going to be the base starter. If this holds up, Burnett is definitely a guy to keep an eye on - can be had late/cheap.

Glad I didn't rush to cut him after hearing the news about Dobbins :goodposting: Now I need to decide between cutting Matt Moore, L.Jackson, or not signing Mike Thomas :goodposting:
