Kevin Jones after the Bye - Detroit Homers chime in please... (1 Viewer)

Many of us have stashed Kevin Jones away since our drafts waiting for him to resume his role as this potent offense's feature back.

We know he will not get huge numbers of carries, but this offense will provide great opportunity nonetheless. He handled the second half of last week's game well, but I have no idea if the team has even had any real work whereby to judge his progress, since.

Those who follow the Lions, anything that the rest of us might not know? Jones could be key for many owners not only to start, but for byes, possible trades, or if he is good enough trade other RBs and keep Jones.

He'll get more carries and more targets as the season progresses. Marinelli said two weeks ago that he was still getting into game shape. Tatum Bell supposedly saw the hand writing on the wall earlier this week and had his agent request a trade.

I read somewhere, too lazy to look it up now, that Jones has officially been named the starting RB after the bye week. Right after that, Bell asked for a trade.

Not a homer, but in a PPR league he could be a RB2 from here on out. After all, for the second half of last year in the same offense, he was a RB1.

I have heard the Bell gripes, but that was about all I can recall seeing over the past week. Most of us know KJ is the starter and we know what that means in a Martz offense, but perhaps someone who follows closely may know something about the situation as it has been quiet in public the past week, with the bye.

Tater didn't touch the ball in the 2nd half of the Skins game...and KJ looked pretty damned good. I think that's all we need to know at this point. KJ going forward is RB1.

any news heading into week 7?

furthermore, what kind of results are owners out there expecting in KJs first start?

The Lions did say that KJ will be the starter. Plus Rod Marinara said that they will also look at the play calling, and that the Lions need to run the ball more.

Sounds like good news for KJ owners.

Martz won't give him the ball. Sorry.
Completely disagree here. Martz won't give him 25+ carries per game, that I'll admit 100%. But his overall touches, including catching and rushing, will keep him extremely productive. Not to mention he'll get enough action in the redzone to keep owners happy. Hell, check the game log, even the way he was used on the final drive at the end of the WAS blowout was impressive. He'll always have a chance to score you points, and that's getting harder and harder to come by these days.Don't assume that because they completely ignored Bell so far (and rightly so, I'm not a Bell fan) that Jones won't have a chance to be productive.

Guru - how safe a start is KJ in your opinion? With so many byes, or just underperforming players, can we expect a top 15 week? Top 10 potential? Bust out potential if he gets the full load?

Usually the first week as starter is a bit limited (i.e. Portis at the years beginning), but he has been worked more and more leading up to the bye and with the extra week, could we see 15 carries (20 if they really mean they will run more, which I doubt) and some good receptions with a couple good scoring chances?

Homer here, he has been labeled the starter. As far as the foot, word is that it hurts pretty bad on Mondays, so he may miss some practices, but should be good from here on out as far as games.

My personal opinion, Martz loves him, so I see the Lions running a bit more going forward. He's running hard, hitting holes, and most importantly... he's not going down on the first hit. He should see 15+ carries a game I'd guess, and with his receiving ability, 20+ touches is reasonable to expect. Looking at last year, K.J. w/ 20 touches is a solid RB2, with top end RB2 value in a ppr. I love him for the second half.

He will be productive. He will catch a lot of balls and he's always been strong around the goal-line. He'll have some 20 yard rushing days but considering the wasteland of RBs this year he's almost as safe a start from here on out as there is.

I love him from here on out as well. Call me crazy, but when I look at last year, I see solid RB1 production most of the way up until his injury, especially in PPR, and a virtual lock in the late 1st/early 2nd round of drafts this season. If he gets back to last year's production, "solid, top end RB2" will be his floor.

Ugh I really am hoping for a 2nd half surge in his production. Sched doesn't look terrible for him. Here's hoping he comes out like gangbusters

Is he worth the start against a pretty stout TB def? I'm looking forward to using him, especially in the bye weeks, but his next two games worry me.

Some moron dropped him for Michael Bennett in my league. The first place (6-0) team has the waiver priority before me

I would not be suprised to see KJ get 100 total yards 60-70 rushing, around 30 receiving and a TD. KJ had 50 yards rushing in the second hald against a pretty good Redskin defense.

I think you'll see more running from the Lions from here on out. It's no secret that their defense is the weak spot, so keeping them fresh (and off the field) is a priority. If they can take away a couple of possesions per game from the opposing team by stretching out drives, I think they'll have a better shot at winning games and making the playoffs.

Tatum Bell wasn't going to be the guy to do that. Jones could be. A five-yard reception is the same as a five-yard run, so I think you'll see Detroit try to sustain some drives and get Jones heavily-involved. By "heavily-involved" I mean maybe 15 carries and six receptions in an ideal game.

All I can say is if you had seen him run in the second half of the Redskins game, you would have never known he was coming off of a serious injury.

I think he was RB 6 or 7 in my ppr league last year before his injury. He should be top 10 in those type leagues from here on out, i'd guess. probably a solid rb2 in non-ppr.

People refer to Martz as not giving him any opportunities, but last season KJ put up some very nice numbers catching the ball out of the backfield, even when he wasn't getting a ton of carries. In leagues that give points for receptions, he should be money.

How is the Lion offensive line? I have the luxury of not needing KJ right now, so I can take a wait and see approach. However, I am not familiar with the Lions personnel and am more curious about there run blocking capabilities. Any input....?

It's only been one game where he carried any kind of significant load so it's pretty early to tell, but he looked pretty close to 100% to me. He had 1200 combined yards and 8 TDs in his 11 healthy games last year. I don't expect that kind of production this season but I think he can easily produce solid RB2 numbers provided that he's involved in the passing attack, and I see no reason to doubt that he will be. Detroit has some tough matchups left this season however.

Sched seems tough.. most of his value will be tied up in Detroit's offense moving the ball, and punching it in.

this is the truth. He ran well. The only negative was that he dropped a very easy short pass to kill a drive for the Lions.

Yes he is the goal line back. I believe he's going to be a good RB#2 maybe even better. Lions have played well this year. With Tatum wanting a trade i believe he knows he's not going to get much work. I just grabbed him in both my leagues.

I grabbed him several weeks ago in the hopes he would be back. Just wasn't sure about the goal line situation. Looks like the pick-up has great potential to pan out. Good thign given Shaun Alexander's recent play.

Is he the goal line back in the Det offense?
I don't think a tough schedule or his goal line back status are factors here since this is a Martz offense. It's like asking if Maroney is the goal line back for NE and the answer is, it doesn't matter since they'll be throwing the ball on goal line situations and also that they won't have as many goal line situations since they'll be putting it in the endzone from the 20 and out and less so inside the 5. Kevin Jones pass catching ability will give DET the short soft drop off pass as well as running game to go with DET's vertical passing attack. Roy and Calvin will stretch the DEF and keep the DEF honest for Jones and Jones will do the same thing for Roy and Calvin. Did a tough schedule matter for Marshall Faulk? No and don't tell me that Kevin Jones is no Marhall Faulk because you're right but the backups all had good days when Faulk was out too.

I just dropped Henry for him yesterday! Getting rid of Henry felt like having an Irish Spring shower .... Ahhhh
