Kevin smith (1 Viewer)

Looked pretty bad, knee buckled on a cut, looked weak when he made next step, then he fell down. Was in a lot pain as well. I'll be shocked if this isn't serious.

He is done for the season; no questions there. Who is the Lions starting RB to pick up now?
Morris will get the carries but I would look to grab Aaron Brown as a possible 2010 starter. If he can get in over the next few weeks and show some moves, he can be a factor next year. He has great speed and good hands.

I always felt Smith was not much different than the RB before him, Kevin Jones. I believe they had same #, correct?

Both are solid [but replaceable] RB's stuck on a bad team. I think they ought to find out what Aaron Brown is the final couple games to determine whether he is any part of the future as a CoP

They will need more than Aaron Brown. He's a slightly better version of Chris Henry (all speed, no real skills between the tackles). That said, they do need linemen far more than RBs.

Ouch

A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that Kevin Smith is believed to have torn his ACL in Sunday's blowout loss to Baltimore.

A Monday MRI will determine the exact extent, but early indications point to Smith needing reconstructive surgery. The late-year injury would jeopardize Smith's availability for 2010 training camp and force the Lions to address the running back position in free agency and/or April's draft. Smith hasn't played well all year, so they might've upgraded over him anyway.

If Kevin Smith has a career changing injury, I don't believe the 2010 leading rusher for Detroit is currently on the team.

I hope Smith will be OK, but it sure looked bad.

Agreed. But they have bigger holes as you mentioned. They need to see if he has a future period with the team. I've been impressed his with speed outside. I'd like to see some of Felton as well as a runner. They don't have the luxury of taking a RB in Day 1 of the draft IMO.

Agreed. The free agency route is very much a possibility also.

Why is John Harbaugh smarter than Jim Schwartz?

At the time of Kevin Smith's injury, Ray Rice had been riding pine for a while.

Idiotic decision.

Its not like Smith is a pro bowl RB or that Detroit has a shot of making the playoffs. Guys in Detroit are playing only for their jobs and pride. Baltimore is still in contention.

-Detroit Objective #1: win the game-Detroit objective #2: maximize team value for 2010 because 2009 is lostOnce objective #1 was no longer attainable it's time to focus on objective #2, and that's bench every player that is going to be an important piece for 2010. They lost the game, and they just created another problem to solve before the 2010 season that could have been prevented.Genius.

Agreed. Forget Aaron Brown. He's a WR/RB tweener who's lucky to be on an NFL roster.I don't think RB makes sense for the Lions in the first round, but they could grab one of the lesser backs in rounds 2-4 to bolster their depth. The aforementioned Chester Taylor also makes sense as a stopgap solution.

He has SOME skills between the tackles, more than Chris Henry anyway. Plus they just signed your boy Peerman. Love to see him get some work.

Here's my chance to rear the name of Cedric Peerman yet again to possibly my own detriment. I don't care though, he's been signed from the practice squad to the active squad last night and I think if he's going to prove he was an overlooked player in this draft and both the Ravens and (more specifically) the Browns screwed up when they cut him.

I think as long as Peerman has learned the playbook and kept in shape, he will surpass Aaron Brown on the depth chart by the end of the season and make some eye-opening plays.

I absolutely despise seeing these type of posts. It may be true that the team's objectives are as stated. but that is such a slippery slope. When it is ok for one guy to be benched but others have to continue, that would seem to affect team chemistry. I think that is why teams that clinch early and start resting folks sometimes have trouble getting it back. Its a game, but it needs to be played full speed, always doing your best and always trying to win.Just my opinion.

Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski considers Kevin Smith (ACL surgery) "very" unlikely to be ready for Week 1 in 2010.

Kowalski, one of the best beat writers in the business, also suggests that Smith's injury could change the Lions' 2010 draft philosophy. Smith may not be 100% until 2011, so running back will be an early-round possibility for Detroit. Clemson's C.J. Spiller will likely be the first RB taken in April, although at 5'9/195 he may not be deemed worthy of a top-five selection.

I hope so. Both you and Russ were very high on him and I liked him the couple of times I saw Virginia play.

There is zero chance of the Lions taking a RB in the first round.

They are still the Lions, but taking a RB in the first round would be a horrible, horrible decision. Again, as much as we love RBs in fantasy football, they are very ordinary in real football. They need guys on both sides of the line. Take a lesser RB in the 3rd and see if he becomes a gem in the rough.

Well, they could rehire Millen.....

I'm interested to see Peerman play, but we all have to remember what offensive line he is playing behind. Running inside is difficult because of the terrible guard play. Stats will not be as important in this case as watching Peerman play. You can mentally subtract the plays where the defense tackles him as he gets the ball from the QB. My guess is his numbers will be below average, especially yards per carry. But even if they are, it will not really tell the whole story. As for Aaron Brown, he is nothing more than a change of pace back. His speed is a weapon and he can be used effectively on occasion, but I can't see any scenario where he gets any substantial carries.

As it stands I agree. If they decide to move down or somehow acquire a late 1st round pick I'm not so sure.

Really? It seems to make no sense for a team that drafted a stud college QB ahead of a offensive line to draft a RB in the first round. There are enough serviceable RBs out there, although losing Smith would be a big loss. I just don't see the Lions spending a pick inside the first 3 rounds even on a RB when their needs are much greater elsewhere (even besides OL).

I certainly can't speak for any NFL front office but, the consensus in Baltimore was that Peerman had a chance to see real playing time in the NFL this year. With Rice, McGahee, and McClain cemented in, Parmele and M.Lawrence beat him out in camp. Peerman's real shot would have come on special teams, where he was beaten out by others as well.

When Bloom. Borbely, Waldman and EBF all agree, I am listening. I picked up Peerman as a flier in my dynasty league. It does makes sense that DET cannot spend a first round pick on a RB and probably not even a second. Smith is not a special player and his injury happened late in the year so it will be hard for him to secure his job. It sounds like no one believes Brown can be a featured guy and we have already seen Morris try to be one when he was younger and on a better team. That means that Peerman will have a chance to compete against some FA. If he is as talented as some of the FBG guys above think he has a real shot. I'll take that gamble with my last roster spot.

I'm not sure if anything this official has been posted yet.

Schwartz said running back Kevin Smith has at least a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He said the swelling was down and Smith was walking without crutches while awaiting surgery. "He's actually walking around great," Schwartz said. "He's doing great. He's doing outstanding."
