Texans | Walter expected to be starter Published Tue May 29 10:43:00 a.m. ET 2007

(KFFL) Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans WR Kevin Walter will be the team's No. 2 receiver this season.

It certainly looks that way; although I still wouldn't rule out someone like Keenan McCardell or another veteran castoff signing before too long.

I posted this in the Texans off season thread

... The "battle" is Walter, A. Davis, Jones with Walter the man to beat. Not sure if that prospect excites me any, but Kubiak has a good deal of manlove for Walter. Anyway, from the reports above and whatever I have been able to gather, Jones looks really good as a returner, and while they like his attitude has looked like a rookie WR with potential. A. Davis only caught a couple of passes with a similiar type unit (great number 1, and nothing too much after that) with Buffalo. In the last OTA or two reports, there are comments regarding Jerome Mathis, who seems to have a chronic issue with his hamstrings. I am infering from Kubiak's comments Mathis is closer to not being with the Texans than any significant WR role. Unlike the first administration, Kubiak does not seem to be willing to have guys like Mathis, who are one-trick ponies with little value as a position player. Mathis is going to have to stay healthy and show more WR skills to maintain a roster spot. Overall, we will have to watch this one during the off season, but I expect Walter to be the starter at the moment.

The current depth chart looks like:

Andre Johnson

Kevin Walter

Jacoby Jones

Jerome Mathis (KR/PR)

Derrick Lewis (KR/PR)

Andre Davis

Guy from section 312

Charlie Adams

Upper deck beer vendor

David Anderson

Radio Station Caller #43

Harry Williams

Onrea Jones

Terry Richardson

Looks like a stellar bunch.

The nice thing about Kevin Walter is that he has done pretty well with the limited opportunities he has received. He has the potential to be a good sleeper candidate this year.

They already had Moulds who would meet your criteria (veteran castoff) and his benefit was having played a year in their system. Who else is there other than McCardell?Antonio Bryant - suspended to start the yearKeyshawn Johnson - claims he's retiredEric Moulds - been there, done thatCharles Rogers - no one seems interestedKevin Johnson - hasn't played in awhileTravis Taylor - now a RaidahRashaun Woods - still out thereMarcus Robinson - haven't heard a peep on himCorey Bradford - see Moulds

Marcus Robinson is currently the #4 receiver in Detroit.

Can he get seperation against a #2 Cb??

Sure he ws good in the 3 WR sets on 3rd downs..but that's completely different.

Can't say I really looked for him all that much either . . .

I don't know if the Texans need a veteran cast off at this point anyways because of previously mentioned that there is no one worth having there. Johnson maybe, but his contract demands are not worth it. I mean people keep saying that Moulds was good as he kept defenses honest and it helped out A. Johnson. I don't think Johnson's good season was an attribute to Moulds 57 receptions for 557 yards. If the Texans felt Moulds had any value I am sure they would have worked something out with him. I actually think it is a good thing that this team starts moving towards the future and seeing what they have for young WR's. I don't know what the Texans have outside of Johnson at the WR position but aging veterans are not exactly the answer for a team in building. I think letting a bunch of young guys including Jones fight out to be a WR 2 spot is not an overly bad thing. I also don't know why the Texans signed A. Green to his contract. The Texans have play makers on defense and they have appeared to sign a QB for the future and have one of the top WR's in the game. They now need a RB for the future (Bush anyone? :banned: ). Green would be a good mentor to a young RB, however, at this point he has no one to mentor unless they feel Dayne, Gado or Lundy are worth mentoring.Turner to the Texans next year anyone? :wall:
