Despite Peter Sirmon being slower than a snail, he will be the starter:

MLB status: It appears veteran Peter Sirmon will remain at middle linebacker for now.

Asked if he could foresee a scenario where rookie Stephen Tulloch would replace Sirmon in the starting lineup, Fisher said: "I don't see that at this point, no."

Working with the second-team defense against the Falcons, Tulloch made six tackles (tying for the team high) while recovering a fumble on the only turnover forced by the defense.

"Pete's obviously ahead because he understands the game, the concepts, the coverages, huddle calls and all those kind of things," Fisher said. "Stephen is still learning and he's not a repeat mistake-maker, which is good. He's learning and he's very athletic. He can line up and just instinctively find it without relying on an understanding of the scheme. Sometimes that's good and sometimes that's not good."

& I Notice the SF 49ers are scratching their heads at a lack of personnel. I wonder how this affects Manny Lawson.Brandon Moore Demoted to second string.

SF CHRONICLE: Linebacker Moore returns -- as backup

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...SPGNAKQEEI1.DTL

Nolan said Sunday that outside linebacker Brandon Moore would back up inside linebackers Jeff Ulbrich and Derek Smith when the team resumes practice today.

Moore was tried as the outside linebacker in the 3-4, before injuring his knee against the Raiders on Aug. 20. Moore expects to return to practice this week, but no longer as a starter.

Nolan gave no hints on who would replace Moore.

"I've got three or four ideas," Nolan said, "but I don't want to say anything, because it would just be speculation."

The 49ers are likely to move back to a 4-3 front, possibly by pairing Isaac Sopoaga with either Bryant Young or Anthony Adams at defensive tackle. Whoever doesn't play alongside Sopoaga would be a defensive end.

With Moore missing the Dallas game, rookie Melvin Oliver started at defensive end, and Oliver looked lost at times. The 49ers allowed 189 rushing yards to the Cowboys.

Nolan hopes a shakeup will improve tackling, a problem in the last two games.

Thanks Greg. This could be huge news if Bryant Young gets moved to end in a 4-3 front. He's no spring chicken, but still found a way to get 8 sacks in a 3-4 last year. It'd also give a reasonable bump in value to Derek Smith and may make him into a reasonable LB2. Maybe a slight bump to Parrish, but not much. Won't help Manny Lawson much at all. Guess Parys Haralson is still nowhere near ready to get back in action.

kinda had a little hijack in the morgan/seward thread so I thought re-posting it here might make more sense:

this is what started the semi-hijack in the seward/morgan thread:

Seward to start at MLB Sunday (Rotoworld) LB Adam Seward will start in the middle Sunday with Dan Morgan (concussion) out.Impact: Seward tallied 7 tackles in Morgan's absence against the Falcons and makes for a decent IDP replacement. Thu Sep 14 8:49:00 a.m. ET 2006

Sounds like Seward is starting.
i would say to be leary of what you read at Rotoworld...they are the ones that reported SF was going to be playing a 4/3...and I dont think they ever retracted their statement either
RotoWorld didnt have to retract it as Coach Nolan siad the 49ers would consider the 4-3. He stuck with the 3-4 anyway for week one, but its all on the record in the San Francisco Chronicle from August at http://www.sfgate.com

I also paasted that link to this board the day it appeared.
thanks for the link, when rotoworld released that they were going to a 4/3 i went digging and came up with a n audio interview of their def coord and he said the 3/4 was still going to be their base defense and he commented on the injuries and how it was easy to move in and out of the 3/4 to a 4/3http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...=005&sc=409

from Aug. 29th

On Monday, Nolan wasn't so sure where Moore would line up.

"He could be inside or outside," Nolan said. "But in this 3-4, 4-3 thing, we can go anywhere we want."

The 49ers flirted with a four-down linemen, three-linebacker alignment against the Cowboys, with rookie Melvin Oliver playing defensive end for Moore, who missed the game with a knee injury.
your link just took me to the main website, is their another article you are talking about ok i just found this one from Aug. 28th(is this the one you were talking about?)

Now in the above article NOLAN SAID that moore would back up the inside LinebackerS(plural) i take that as in a 3/4 scheme...but then the writer seems to have ignored what nolan said and went on to say that the 9ers would LIKELY move back to a 4-3 So from everything i have been able to find I hear the Def Coord say the base is a 3/4, i see the coach say a specific player is backing up inside LinebackerS so I am to assume they arent moving to a 4/3

We are expected to see Roderick Green play in the first regular game against the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. The 49ers under Mike Nolan have been trying to stick with a 3-4 defensive front but due to the lack of healthy outside linebackers they have been forced to move back to the 4-3.
GAMEBOOKgamebook shows the niners started in a 3/4 set(not sure how much time they spent in it)...so the writer of the above article was wrong again in what they expected...again I havent seen anything coming from the coaches that dictates they will switch schemes, will they move people around, will they try different things to alleviate the problems from injuries, etc the answer is YES
after finding this thread i realize that grejjcross was talking about the article from the 28th...but i dont see where in that article that Nolan says anything to hint at a complete switch to the 4/3(that was the writer), if anything nolan re-affirmed that SF would be running a 3/4 when he said moore would be backing up both INSIDE LINEBACKERS(to me that screams 3/4)
