Chiefs insiders were reporting how much better Fox looked in mini-camps. The Star is reporting today that Herm Edwards sees the ROLB competition as more wide open than he'd previously let on. He's too small to take the LOLB job and bump Derrick Johnson to a more productive ROLB role, but he's been used in some nickel packages this pre-season and could cut into either Johnson's or Kawika Mitchell's snaps in some passing situations.
I am by no means suggesting that you should run out to get Fox or panic over DJ or Mitchell. Just an FYI and a little Thursday speculation.
Also, I'm not buying Herm's yammering on about using four linebackers in some packages. Last year, with Jimmy Wilkerson and Eric Hicks playing one end, maybe. But even Edwards, whose known for a lack of consistency in his defensive playbook isn't going to a four linebacker package to get a disappointing Bell on the field unless Tamba Hali proves an even bigger liability.
