POSTED 3:50 p.m. EDT, April 3, 2007OLINDO TO NEW ORLEANSA league source tells us that the Dolphins have traded kicker Olindo Mare to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.Per the source, Mare's contract will be transferred to the Saints as-is, with no reduction in the $1.5 million base salaries that he is due to earn in each of the next three seasons.Mare's exit from Miami became a certainty when the Dolphins signed Jay Feely last month. Mare reportedly had been pressing the team to either trade him or release him.The latest move is a bad sign for incumbent Saints kicker John Carney. The veteran is signed through 2007, at a salary of $820,000. Carney came to the NFL in 1988, and has played for the Bucs, Chargers, and Saints. He has kicked for the Saints since 2001.
I just don't get it. Why trade a pick for a guy that the Dolphins will have to cut? I also thought Carney did a good job for the Saints, so I don't understand the trading of a 6th rounder.I am hoping this is another one PFT misses on.

The Saints traded a sixth-round pick for Miami Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare on Tuesday, team spokesman Greg Bensel confirmed.

Mare, a 10-year veteran, will compete with Saints veteran John Carney, though both could earn spots on the roster. Mare is a kickoff specialist who led the NFL with 24 touchbacks last season.

Mare, who turns 34 in June, became expendable when the Dolphins signed free agent Jay Feeley last month. Mare has been one of the most consistent kickers in the league over the last decade, but he had his worst career season in 2006, making 26 of 36 field goal attempts.

All news, however inconsequential, has merit - especially to Dynasty guys (and guys who drafted Mare in Survivor leagues :o ).

So much for the signing of Prater in Miami.

if he does take over PK duties, i expect the guy to love playing in a dome for more than half a season.

Dolphins trade Olindo Mare to Saints for 6th-round pickBy Alex Marvez sun-sentinel.com Posted April 3 2007, 3:49 PM EDT Olindo Mare has gotten his wish of playing for a new team, with the Dolphins having traded him to the Saints for a 2007 sixth-round draft pick (199th overall).Mare, who began kicking for the Dolphins in 1997, became expendable last month when the franchise signed former New York Giants kicker Jay Feely as his replacement. But the Dolphins refused to immediately cut Mare even after he publicly asked for his release because the franchise was hoping to trade him. LocalLinks Mare is expected to replace John Carney, the Cardinal Newman High graduate who has kicked for the Saints since 2001.The Dolphins now have recouped an extra sixth-round pick the franchise lost Saturday when a trade of Dan Wilkinson to Denver was rescinded when the defensive tackle failed to report to the Broncos
I think they got it right.

Good job for my Dolphins here I guess.

6th Rounder is better than what we would have got for cutting him soon.

During the playoff game Carney was not relied on to make FGs over 50. He also couldn't PK past the 10 yard line. To get the guy that led the league in touchbacks last season and having your opponent start at the 20-30 instead of the 30-40 is worth a 6th rounder IMO.

Oh and as a homer I hope the Saints see a Colston in the 7th round again, that's why they are hanging on to the 7th. :D

Mare could be the kicker of the year this year. He was 1 of 6 from 50+ last year, but prior to this year he was 9 of 14 from 50+. He's not the best kicker in the NFL, but kicking indoors should help, and New Orleans is certainly a good enough offense for him to get opportunities.

You may be on to something. He made 26 of 36 FGs last year (5 of the misses were 50 yards or more). Interesting thing was, he was 10 for 10 in three indoor games last season. One New Orleans TV station is reporting that John Carney has decided to retire, to that somewhat explains why the Saints must have felt they needed to go ahead and move on a kicker now, and use a pick, vs. waiting out the Dolphins cutting Mare.

I think this is a good move, assuming of course that Mare is still a quality K. Assuming he is, trading a 6th round pick is a good price to ensure you get him and prevents him from hitting the open market.

The Saints decided to carry a second kicker halfway through the season last year to handle kickoffs and long FG attempts. The trade makes since to me, the Saints didn't want to waste a second roster spot for a kickoff specialist again this year.

Saints special teams, specifically kick and punt coverage, have been suspect in recent years. Now it may be the quality of competition but also I just think that was an area where we were weak. Adding Mare helps settle that some. Peace of mind for a 6th rounder? That's cheap...

Seems clear to me Mare will be the KO guy. Well worth a 6th rounder. And at least MIA gets something for him.

And don't give me this PKs are meaningless BS. Friggin Gould cost me the playoffs last year.

this kind of settles it for me: carney retiring. getting a reliable kicker is as important as any other skill position. good teams recognize this. i know vanderjagt was auditioning over the offseason in NOLA but he's been spiraling in recent years. mare is just a smart pick up.

As far as rankings go, team scoring = PK scoring.

Mare instantly becomes top-10 and a fantasy starter. In Miami he was  but in Nawrlins he's :missing:

Yea Carney has been great, and is still pretty accurate but as he has aged his power is faded and I see retirement in the future. Mare had a off year as far as FG's go but the before was pretty nice to him. Kicking indoors should help him get back on the right track, good move for the saints. And I agree with the post above, he should put up some nice numbers as the offense will get him many FG chances, not to mention some XP's

Kenny Wilkerson (local drive time radio sports talk host and Saints sideline reporter) said this afternoon that Carney actually let the Saints know last weekend that he was retiring. I still haven't seen anything in writing that confirms this, but certainly explains the trade now.

From Elias...

The Dolphins traded veteran kicker Olindo Mare to the Saints for a sixth-round draft choice, the 199th overall choice in this month's draft. So what, you say? Who can you get with the 199th pick?

Hmmm. With the 199th choice in the 2000 NFL draft, the Patriots selected Tom Brady.

So you're saying that the Saints just traded the next Tom Brady for a kicker??? What a bunch of morons. :lmao:

Saints release John CarneyApril 5, 2007NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Kicker John Carney was released by the Saints on Thursday after asking to be let go after the team obtained Olindo Mare in a trade with Miami. The 43-year-old Carney was the Saints' all-time leader in field goal accuracy percentage (.833). He joined the Saints in 2001 and will be entering his 18th NFL season."John wanted to explore other opportunities that are available in the NFL," said General Manager Mickey Loomis. "This is something we were sensitive to because he has been an important part of the Saints and the community during his time in New Orleans. We will always have a lot of respect for John as a person and a player."Carney is ranked second in club history with 661 points and 150 field goals. In 2002, he set a team record for points in a season with 130."Given our recent acquisition of Olindo, we wanted to give John every opportunity to sign with another team as soon as possible," Loomis said.
From Yahoo!... Interesting to see the way it ultimately came down: No retirement. Simple move by management.
