I noticed Kiel moving up the IDP rankings and projections. Do the experts think Kiel will hold onto the starting job?

:boxing: I was pretty skeptical that he ever lost it. With all the talk about Clinton Hart this offseason, I think it's pretty telling that Kiel opened camp with the first team. He's their best run supporting safety. They went out and paid for Marlon McCree to help out in coverage. Things aren't settled yet (Jue was still the first team FS last I heard), but I'd put my money on Kiel-McCree in the opening huddle.

As Jene said, it looks like it's going to be Kiel and McCree.

McCree will start at one safety spot. The battle is really between Kiel at SS (in which case McCree would play FS) and Jue at FS (in which case McCree would play SS).

Kiel has been working with the first team all through camp, and the reports I've seen all say that he is playing well.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that DB coach Brian Stewart really likes Jue. Last year, it was generally acknowledged (by the players and by the assistant DB coach, Albert Lewis, who has since been let go) that Jerry Wilson had outplayed Jue during camp last year, but Stewart still went with Jue as the starter.

So there's still an outside chance that you'll see a McCree-Jue combo at safety, but a Kiel-McCree combo must be considered the favorite at this point.

I also have Kiel as a fourth DB but I am also keeping an eye on the Bears situation involving the Brown injury. If Mike Brown proves incapable of staying healthy, the SS job will almost certainly go to Chris Harris and he could be avaliable in most leagues. Harris had 53 tackles at free safety last year in fourteen games and Brown had 72 in twelve games at strong safety. Harris should prove capable if given the chance and will provide 70+ tackles as a minumum if Brown can't play at all.
