ALAMEDA – Lane Kiffin may be long gone from Raiders headquarters after last week's public firing by owner Al Davis. But that doesn't mean the former coach is forgotten in the locker room.
JaMarcus Russell, caught in the middle when Davis told reporters Kiffin did not want to use the No. 1 overall pick on the LSU quarterback in 2007, said Wednesday that Kiffin called him Monday and talked strategy heading into the Raiders' game in New Orleans.
"He just called and talked to me about their defense, things he would do if he was here," Russell said. "So really, nothing changed."
Meaning Kiffin is still tutoring him?
"He's got a lot of off-time on his hands," Russell said matter-of-factly. "So he would pay attention (to) the defense I would have to go up against, leaves me a text message or a voice mail here or there."
Kiffin flip-flopped among Russell, Brady Quinn, Calvin Johnson or even trading the pick, Davis said last week.
And while Kiffin has declined comment, Russell was asked if he misses his first pro coach.
"Yeah, he gave me the opportunity to play, my first year in the NFL," Russell said. "He was a good coach to me. He was always doing good things around here."
