Kind of a tough question to answer, but... (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
For years and years, MLB players sported the traditional stirrups look.

Then at some point, it became fashionable to hide the "arch" of the stirrups.

This was followed by the worst invention ever.... the fake stirrup painted on the sock. :clyde:

Then the pants began getting longer. I believe the ringleader of this trend was Cal Ripken.

On to my question. Just about everyone today is wearing the pants covering the shoe tops, sometimes even strapped underneath. When I first saw it, I remember thinking "Wow, that is HORRIBLE".... but I forget who the player was. Griffey? Bonds? Sheffield? Someone before that, even? Albert Belle?

It's to the point now where anything except that style looks odd. You still get the guys who show ALL sock up to the knee, like A-Rod and Varitek for instance. But the true stirrup look is just about completely gone. God Bless 72 year-old Jamie Moyer!

I actually think that kinda look is the new "old school" - if there is such a thing (example)

I think that 'high socks' look is terrible.
 I like it better then the guys who are walking on their pant cuffs. It has a "throwback" look to it, without being too old fashioned, imho. I've actually worn stirrups - they are damned uncomfortable. The whole time,it feelslike you got something stuckin your shoe. I'd much prefer to wear solid color or "painted stripe" socks. To each his own though.

:hifive: So, are you for or against pants at the knee?Anyhow, couple the high socks with Paul Byrd and his old school windup (which is sometimes done with a double windup!!), and you've got baseball. :bag:

Derek Bell ran with this schtick in the early 90's I believe. He always was one extreme or the other. High-knee or over the cleat.

I remember thinking he was crazy at the time before it caught on.

I hate it. Why is that confusing?I mentioned that you still get guys who show sock up to the knee (as opposed to the long pants)... but I don't like the look.

It looks like they're wearing pajamas with them covering their cleats, they might as well be wearing footsies with a trap door. I hate it, the stirrup is part of the uniform and a pretty cool part. Kudos to Leo Durocher...

Leo Durocher, longtime manager of the Chicago Cubs, had a measuring stick in the clubhouse. Players were required to match the length of their stirrup loops to this stick at about 4 inches, exposing only a small part of the white sanitary

THAT'S the dude I was thinking of... nice work! :lmao:
They were talking about this the other night during the Phillies' broadcast, commenting on Moyer being one of the last guys to guy with the high pants. They mentioned Derek Bell as one of the first, but there was another guy even before that that they talked about. Now I can't remember who it was. :wall:
