Jones Present at OTAs; Continues his Rehab Process

One player present at the OTA session who was unable to physically participate was running back Kevin Jones. Jones has been diligently rehabbing his foot throughout the offseason with an end-goal of being able to participate at the outset of training camp.

Despite the fact that he can’t physically run through plays at this point, Jones has been poking his head into the offensive huddles to familiarize himself as much as he can with what is currently going on offensively.

Jones: “I’m just trying to stay in a groove with the terminology; watching the plays, the blocking schemes. (We’re) doing things a little different because we have a new offensive line coach (Jim Colletto). It’s not a whole bunch different but enough to have to pay attention to.”

Jones’ rehab process reached a new point yesterday when he ran on a treadmill – prior to that, he had been running in a pool in the team training room.

Jones: “I’m doing the bike to warm up and I’m doing some stepladder drills and just a bunch of drills to try to stay in some type of shape.”

Marinelli is also encouraged by Jones’ progress.

Marinelli: “I’m not going to be the doctor on this one, but from a coach’s perspective, it looks like he’s really progressing a lot. I think everybody is excited about it. I don’t want to give false hopes to anybody but what I do see is that the guy is hungry; he’s out here working and doing all the things we’re asking them to do.

“I just think it means so much too him – football is really important to this guy. Sometimes that mindset is so important. I’m excited about that.”

Need an emoticon with the face plugging it's ears and saying "lalalalalalalala, I can't hear you."

It would get used on every other thread by naysayers.

The Lions should have kept this quiet and sent out signals they were interested in Adrian Peterson.

This is good news as I'm tired of the Lions being so terrible and I like KJ.

The more I think about this, the more I see some similarities of Kevin Jones in 2007 being a lot like Ahman Green in 2006. There could be some great value out of Jones as he recovers from a "career ending" injury, and falls to 6th round or so in redrafts. As a #3 RB, with two good starting RBs in place, along with a couple of WRs and a TE and/or QB. I'd take a chance again on sports medicine and the player's dedication and desire to prevail.

Kevin Jones has done nothing in the NFL to earn the right to be simply known as "KJ". In other words, I had no idea who the _____ you were talking about. Thanks.

JONES UPDATE: Kevin Jones doesn't sound threatened by the acquisitions of running backs Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett.

"I see Tatum as an every-down back," said Jones, who is recovering from a serious left foot injury. "I don't see Duckett as an every-down back.

"I guess they do need insurance. Were my feelings hurt? No. Because when I'm healthy, I'll be the guy. That's all that matters to me."

If Jones sees Bell as an every-down back, how would Bell work with him?

"He'll spell me when I'm tired," Jones said.

Jones began jogging Monday. He will have two screws removed this month, go back into a boot to let swelling subside, then return to rehab.

"My goal is to be back for camp," Jones said. "I'm on pace, a little ahead of pace, I guess."

Marinelli is cautiously optimistic.

"It looks like he's really progressing well," Marinelli said. "I think everybody's excited about it. But I don't want to build false hopes to anybody."

What league have you been watching?
The same league in which he plays about 40% of the games. The same league in which he underperforms every single year. The same league in which he is trumpeted every year as a breakout player, and then he fails. You guys getting it yet?

this is all nice to hear, its always good to be ahead of schedule. unfortunately we really wont know anything concrete until the boot comes off for good and KJ starts running. it is nice to hear nothing but positives to this point though.

classic . . .it's the same thing every year; player's reputations (or draft position) trumps their actual ability . . .to wit: People actually think that David Carr's a legit NFL QB . . . other people think that Mike Williams was not given a legit chance in Detroit . . .etc., etc., ad nauseum . . .

i dont think KJ underperformed as a rookie (1300/6td). he's missed 7 games in 3 years, not great but not 40%. he also caught 61 balls last year, finishing as RB11 in ppr leagues. not bad for a guy most people got in the 3rd or 4th round. watch him play, he's fast, he runs hard and he's got great hands. not saying he's a superstar, not saying the injuries arent annoying. just saying he's a good back.

WTH does that have to do with him having the nickname KJ? Is there some other KJ out there that you're confusing him with?

From his blatant exaggerations it is clear he is confused in general.

Oh I got it, just not nonsense you are spitting.

The 40% isn't accurate. The 'underperformance' is overly relative and quite disputable. He helped my team quite a bit last year, and was a top 10 back by our scoring system. I know the above post is getting blasted, so I'm not trying to add fuel to the fire or anything. But it's worth noting that KJ, while he certainly has had his ups and downs, is far from a bust. If healthy, he could very likely be a top 10 back (as he was last year in my league).
