Significant progress has been made in contract negotiations between the Broncos and running back Knowshon Moreno, an NFL source said tonight.

An agreement on what will be a 5-year deal has not yet been reached for the team's top draft pick, but it's getting close. Moreno was still in Georgia as the Broncos prepared for their scrimmage tonight at Invesco Field at Mile High.

The worth of Moreno's deal is expected to be at least $22 million ($2 million more than No. 13 pick Brian Orakpo) with a guarantee in excess of $12.5 million.

Moreno was selected No. 12 in the first round of the April draft.

Broncos even closer to signing Moreno

The Broncos are closing in on an agreement for a five-year contract with Knowshon Moreno, that would end the rookie tailback's eight-day holdout from training camp.

If a deal is reached today with Moreno, the No. 12 overall selection and first running back taken in the 2009 draft, he could participate in his first training camp workout Sunday afternoon. The team is off Saturday.

Moreno, 22, entered the draft after his sophomore season. He rushed for 2,734 yards on 5.6 yards per carry in his first two college seasons, and added another 645 yards receiving on 53 catches.

It's unclear whether the Broncos would deem Moreno ready to play in their first preseason game Friday at San Francisco, but eventually he is expected to be part of a tailback rotation that also includes veterans Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan.

Broncos finally agree on contract with Moreno

The Broncos have reached an agreement on a five-year contract with Knowshon Moreno, according to two NFL sources.

Any chance he plays in their first preseason game? He'll be shooting up into the early 3rd round as soon as he breaks a 7 yard run.

Knowshon Moreno, the Denver Broncos’ top pick who was the first running back selected in the N.F.L. draft, ended his eight-day holdout on Friday, agreeing to five-year, $23 million deal that includes $13 million in guarantees.

Moreno, who rushed for 2,734 yards and 30 touchdowns in his two seasons at Georgia, was the 12th pick over all in the draft in April.

Moreno will join the team for practice Sunday. The Broncos do not have a session Saturday.

Broncos Coach Josh McDaniels said he and Moreno’s teammates were excited for him to arrive.

“I understand how this game works,” McDaniels said Friday while the sides were still working out the final details of Moreno’s contract. “His representatives are doing what they feel is best for him.

“We’re both trying to do what’s best for Knowshon and get him here as fast as we can.”

Although Moreno has some catching up to do, McDaniels insisted he had not missed his chance to win the starting tailback job.

This is what I was thinking. 1st pick drafting in 4 weeks. I have been able to get him at the 4/5 turn but I think that is going to be unlikely by the time I draft.
