Kornheiser's Comment (1 Viewer)

Fly admits to watching football with one finger on the mute button. Sometimes it's just more pleasant sans commentary. (Just ask Georgia Tech's Paul Johnson, who thinks broadcasters are 'morons'.) But late in the Cowboys-Eagles game, the sound was on, and Tony Kornheiser was apologizing. Having blissfully missed much of the first half audio while watching an unbelievable game, Fly couldn't figure out what he was apologizing for. Well, here's what for: "Following a replay of the Felix Jones kickoff return for a touchdown with audio from the Spanish-language call of the game, Kornheiser said, 'I took high-school Spanish, and that either means 'nobody is going to touch him' or 'could you pick up my dry cleaning in the morning.' " Not exactly Don Imus. But at best, TK was being a bit insensitive; at worst, he was stereotyping Mexican immigrants as household help -- not cool.
Sorry if this is a Honda, but I could not for the life of me understand what he was apologizing for. I was doing somethin during the Jones KO for a touchdown.

this is a perfect example of what our ridiculous PC society has become.

obviously his joke had nothing to do with race but rather was an attempt at humourous self-depreciation because of his inability to speak/understand Spanish.

and really, if the Spanish announcer was saying, "could you pick up my dry cleaning" to Felix Jones, isn't it the black community that should be upset? After all, why is some Hispanie (or White) announcer claiming that the African American football player should get his dry cleaning?

either way it's all pretty stupid.

it's stupid that some MNF executive has to call the booth to make the unfunny Kornheiser apologize.

it's ever supidererer that someone offended by the comment could be taken seriously and be justified/empowered in any way.

 That had nothing to do with race.

Besides, isn't Tony a Jewish man? Certain races get a pass anyways (KIDDING)

If I could simply watch the game with the sounds of the stadium/fans and nothing else, I'd be in heaven. For all you future TV excecutives out there, I'd pay a small fortune for this ability. No commercials, no advertising, no pimping, no propaganda, just the sports and the weather. Is that too much to ask?

So no one who thinks it was meaningless wonders why of all the "funny and wrong" phrases he could dredge up, that was the one that he chose?

How about, "Can you tell me where the washroom is?" or "That's a lovely hat you have."

Maybe he was improvising on National TV and said what he was thinking?

Couple things:

1. Did anyone notice all the NFL Latino commercials during the game? I sure did. If there was a phone call from an exec, you can bet it was because they spent a ton of money on marketing the NFL to the latin community and Kornheiser potentially offended a huge target audience.

2. I think many of you are misinterpreting what he (Kornheiser) was doing. I think he was either offering an example of what he could interpret as a result of taking Spanish in high school or - and this ones the big one - offering the little Spanish that he knows by virtue of his own usage frequency. So if he knows "can you pick up my dry cleaning" it's because he says it a lot - presumably to a servant of some sort.

I personally was not offended in the slightest, but I am not latino. And I can see why an exec would want an Kornheiser to apologize for basically not knowing the audience and being insensitive. Whatever. It's ESPN's fault for trying to get cute and put the 3 commentator team into the booth when we all know Terico and Jaws would be perfect (relative to the 3 of them).

wow.I'd imagine if he used this one you're suggesting, they may have fired him on the spot.Again, I'm not sure whether it's the African American or Hispanic crowd that's supposed to be offended, but you just told one of those groups that they smell funny and they don't shower enough.and here you had time to think and type this all out.

How come I've heard booyah Stu and Tommy Jackson use references toward "White boys" and nobody bats an eye? Meanwhile I remember how sober and solemn they all were the day after that blowbag Rush Limbaugh did some of his blowbagging. That network is a bunch of F'ing hypocrites.

wowObviously you've never seen an "<Insert language here> for Travelers" book. People take them on trips when they need to learn useful phrases (or find washrooms).

On a related note, how many times did he call Jerry Jones his "boy" last night and pimp the "ringleader" and his "circus" as the biggest spectacle in sports. God he annoys me. Sorry for hijack.

Even if that joke was supposed to be based on some sort of racial stereotype, it falls flat. God, can't that guy do anything right?

Interesting to me this isn't getting more attention here.

It's not hard to see the "if you're speaking spanish you must be my maid" insinuation I'm sure some will make.

No surprise that not all minority races are equal when it comes to stuff like this it seems.

This is not a statement made by "an anglo" to a spanish-speaking person; it is a spanish-speaking person making the translated statement.

I could be wrong but I thought Kornheiser said that was the spanish phrase he learned. As in, the spanish a white guy needs to know is how to tell my spanish speaking maid to go pickup the laundry. On a night when the NFL was really trying to play up and recognize the Hispanic audience, it was an incredibly stupid thing to say.J

you're making my point.I'm sure that mundane phrase is in a Travel Book.I'm sure it's a harmless phrase. And I'm sure if some announcer used your phrase in a joke where the punchline required <insert random mundane phrase here>, the PC police would be all over him.

i don't think it was a huge deal, but i think it was a remarkably stupid comment. I have no issue with someone asking him to apologize, if that is what happened.

saying

"i am sorry if that came across insensitive" does not make our world overly PC, it won;t damn free speech, it is simple, straight forward, and clear

i take him at his word, no big deal

I could be wrong but I thought Kornheiser said that was the spanish phrase he learned.
...in High School.that's a pretty important part of the discussion you're leaving out there.he's making himself out to be "everyman" with his joke, not some elitist who has foreign maids and servants.

Didn't know that; definitely makes things dicier.

i don't think anyone here is saying he is a racist, it was just not the wisest turn of phrase to use on a night when the NFL is pushing it's involvment with latin americanssomeone poitned ou how it could have been taken, he said, sorry, did not mean it that wayno crime was committed either by the words or the apologywhat's the problem?

How could this even be taken offensively. He was saying he didn't know spanish, but pointing out what the announcer was saying (or something similar), while attempting to be funny. I found it mildly amusing. He's a class act and apologized, I would have said something along the lines, of, "oh that's ######ed"...and thereby pissed off a bunch more people

My wife is Puerto Rican and she laughed.

But then again, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans don't necessarily always get along (her explanation; not mine).

Personally I think it's more troubling that we as a society we are more concerned with making sure that everyone "feels" good and we don't offend anyone, often to the detriment of clearly speaking ones mind and correctly identifying an issue, that while "sterotypical" is nonetheless a problem.

I say that not because it relates to TK's comment in this case as it was a throw away line, intended to be amusing. Be amused or don't but it was a joke and not really in poor taste IMO, but it's the root cause of a seconday effect.

Compounding this alarming trend, we are now increasingly in the habit of fingerpointing at something that's been said that had no effect on you whatsoever. And we elect Presidents on this basis.

That point applies to this TK remark. I haven't heard any Hispanics respond on this board indicating that they were offended by TK's remarks yet, so I don't see the need to be overanalzying his remark. But please, if you were offended fire away and let us know how this remark impacted you personally.

:moneybag:

It sounds like an off-the-top-of-the-head attempt at humor. But there was 0% chance he was going to say "I will pick up your dry cleaning in the morning" off the top of his head.

dumb comment.... much ado about nothing.

I take more offense to their general football knowledge than lame attempts at racist humor

As punishment, he should have to wear a hat. ALWAYS. Some people are not made for HD. That dude is a prime example.

This was my thought as well, and the thought made me smile. Then I had the nightmare that they might bring in Bryant Gumbel to replace him, and the thought made me dry heave. Ol' Tony isn't the worst they could do after all.
