Texans Will Reportedly Name Kubiak New Head Coach

Official Announcement Planned for After Broncos' Playoff Run

HOUSTON (Jan. 13) - It appears Gary Kubiak will get a chance to coach in his hometown.

The Houston Chronicle is reporting that the long-time offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos will be named as the coach of the Houston Texans.

The announcement will be made after the Broncos' postseason run. Denver (13-3) will host the New England Patriots Saturday night in the divisional playoffs.

The Texans fired coach Dom Capers on January 2, one day after finishing a 2-14 season with a loss at San Francisco, and own the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft.

That pick will be used on either Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush of Southern California or Texas quarterback Vince Young, who is a Houston native. If the Texans pick up their $8 million contract option on quarterback David Carr in March, then Bush will likely be the selection.

Kubiak has served the last 11 years as the Broncos' offensive coordinator under coach Mike Shanahan. This season, Denver ranked first in the AFC in rushing and fifth in offense.

Born in Houston, Kubiak starred at Texas A&M and served as a backup quarterback to John Elway in Denver from 1983-91, when Dan Reeves was the coach. The Texans hired Reeves as a consultant last month.

The sixth-winningest coach in NFL history with a record of 201-172-2, Reeves went to the Super Bowl three times with the Broncos and once with the Falcons.

Born in 2002, the Texans improved their win total each year from four to five to seven under Capers before crashing in 2005.

I like the hire. Kubiak has been with Shanahan for a long, long time and his ties to the Texas area should help in terms of goodwill.Solid move on the Texans part, at least on paper.

As a Bronco fan I really hate this signing, sucks to see him leave.Agree however that it is a good signing for the Texans and the right move for Gary.

Good hire. Hopefully the Texans listen to Kubiac when he explains to them the importance of having an offensive line.

Assuming this happens, look for the Texans to take Young, or trade down and get Ferguson. If Kubiak's learned anything from Shanny, it's "We don't need no stinking first round RB's".

I though I've been hearing Feb 15th?... Oh well, combine my memory w/journalism and you can come up w/ anyhing. This bodes well for my 1.01 pick. And if you say they won't spent a top 1st on a RB 'cause Denver did well w/ later picks, remember Tater was a 2nd. And didn't they take Lelie in the 1st? How'd that work out. Another thing, Kubiak was the O.C.. Not the GM or even head coach, so what do you think his opinion was worth in the war room if he was allowed to have one. Think it may have been more like this..."Hey Mike, I could really use some depth at LG. We have contracts coming up in the next offseason on our 2nd and 3rd RB so we should address that. Oh, and please get me a TE instead of that WR from Hawaii."

Now its HIS show to run (or be a part of running along side a GM) and if he thinks he can coach an O-line that somebody thought would be good into a working unit, plus maybe a free agent, why not? He gets his 'Clinton Portis' type/size/speed RB with more upside. Me thinks a good way to start a HC gig.

what does him being an aggie do to how they pursue Bush/Young, or trade down - if any?
I don't think it is going to make a difference. Now, if Kubiak were being hired for a college coaching job, for example, and Young and Bush were high school recruits, your suggestion would make perfect sense, as those recruiting lines and allegiances are tight within the boundaries of the state. It would make a difference. In this instance, though, I think Kubiak's ultimate goal will be to win and have a certain level of job security. If it is determined that Young provides him with those two things, the Aggie will pick the Longhorn. I like the hire for the Texans.

I believe (apparrantly as do Reeves and Kubiak) that Carr is an above average/young QB with significant growing room that has been stunted by poor O-line play. Upgrade the O-line, play calling and RB then your QBs look much, much better.

Upgrade the RB? DD is a good RB WTF

They are wrong. He's a bad quarterback and a terrible "leader."Now, feel free to unleash all the standard, "Are you an NFL coach?" and "Who's paying you to scout?" comments. Fact is, I have seen enough of David Carr to know that he's simply not a good quarterback, Oline or not.

I have to agree with Colin> Carr is not a leader now. He may grow into that in another place with another chance. However, in Houston- no way. He lost me after the Cincy game, after O coordinator Palmer was fired (something Carr was happy about.) They lost, scored about 10 points, and his reply was- "we did a lot of good things. We are getting better."That told me:

1) He was comfortable losing.

2) He was comforable with only scoring 10 points as long as he liked his coach.

Leaders don't do that.

True. DD is better at his position than Carr will be at his. Carr is ok to avg at best. DD is a very good RB.

He actually said, "That's as well as we can play, and I'll take it. If we can play that way every week, I'd be happy." After they lost.

Any Bronco offensive linemen going to be UFA's this year? I wonder if they'll have any allegiance to Kubiak and make for some quick upgrades on the Houston line.

Didn't say D.D. wasn't good. I just believe Bush is a better back and Davis makes a great complimentary RB. Both are so versitile, play calling options are wide open. Sounds like you guys have seen a lot more of Carr than I have, I just remember that Reeves gave him a good grade and I thought Kubiak has said the same. Of course, at this point it may be pre-draft smokescreen.

Any ideas on who will take the OC position?
As it is reported in Houston, Kubiak would probably bring the Denver RB coach to be the OC.It's not guaranteed but I've seen this mentioned.

The Texans got a good thing with Kubiak and he was my favorite to win the HC job in the inaugural season of 2002......at least we will finally get him home.

Kubiak getting a HC gig has been way too long coming. He deserved a chance long ago. Good move by the Texans.
Don't forget, Kubiak was a very hot candidate years ago [after the SB wins in Denver] and could've had several jobs but he pulled his name out of the running at the time. After pulling out of the running, it's taken time [and his willingness] to get back into circulation.

From the Significant FA thread:Denver: WR Charlie Adams (RFA); RB Ron Dayne; DT Monsanto Pope; DT Demtrin Veal (RFA); LB Patrick Chukwurah; LB Keith Burns; S Sam Brandon; DE Marco Coleman; TE/LS Mike Leach.

Not sure if guys who can void contracts are included or not, but at the moment it looks like they only have a TE/LS who will be a free agent.
