Kyle Orton suffered an open dislocation of the right knuckle (1 Viewer)

Sounds like QB Kyle Orton either strained or partially tore a tendon in his right index finger. Either way, he should be ready for Bengals (week 1)

http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter

There goes his long ball.
How can someone have a strained or torn tendon on the index finger of a throwing hand and not feel the effects? I'd think it would effect how he grips the ball, and would impact every phase of the game. This is not good. Someone fire us up the Brandstater hype machine.

Yeah Collinsworth was saying lastnight that the index finger on the throwing hand is the last thing the ball touches during the release. If it does bother Orton, he passes might wobble...More

So you're basically saying the ball will be rotating end over end?

I didn't think that was possible.

I have to agree with moleculo here.

Denver 850 was interviewing a hand surgeon tonight and he was guessing (obviously not Orton's doctor) that if surgery was required, it was a 6 week injury with the possibility of being closer to 10. He said it is just not something you can work through.

Who knows. It could end up as just a bad cut and he is back next week.

I just can't imagine a more depressed fanbase in any sport right now than the Denver Broncos fans. Not because they're going to be bad...plenty of teams across all sports will be bad. But because they just dumped a franchise QB (one of the hardest things to find), lost a HOF coach for some inexperienced kid coming off like a doofus, and now are on the verge of losing a stud WR....and then to toss gas on the fire, their somewhat already sucky QB goes down. And the new guy sounds like a door to door meat salesman or something.

What a horrible, horrible turn of events.

Nice synopsis. Tough to be a Donkey I'm sure. It gives me a little more optimism being a Dallas fan. We didn't screw up as bad as Denver this year. Hooray. :loco:

Got this over at a med website...

Collateral ligament injury

•Treatment involves rest (of course) and buddy taping the involved finger to the finger next to it (on the side of the injured ligament, if only on one side). Also icing (or contrast baths), and range-of-motion exercises are beneficial. Again, 4-6 weeks is the common timeframe for healing. If the finger seems to have a lot of movement from side-to-side or is just not healing, you may have had a full ligament rupture and should seek medical attention.

DEN 4-12 at best.

Cap, whether you still play FF or not your football takes are spot on. You could start a new site, the anti-FF FF site. Meaning because you don't play anymore you have no biases or less biases on players, therefore you can think clearly when looking at a situation.Lot of owners have invested highly in Denver...be it Marshall(3rd), Royal(4th), Moreno(4th), Orton(8th)...there are definitely boatloads of owners that have these guys on their rosters and I think a lot of the posts in here with regards to Denver are just not brutal or honest enough about the situation...it's bleak and getting worse every day. An OC was let go this week, why not a HC before the season starts?

The only upside is that the expectation bar is so low right now, anything better than going 0-16 and losing every game by 28+ may actually seem like a decent season.

Sage Rosenfeld probably could come cheap. Not what Denver fans had in mind a few months ago, but servicable.

this sucks. i got royal on a bunch of teams.

denver needs to find another q. sage is a good idea for sure. also mebbe try to get thigpen.

Dear Kyle,

I have to start off by saying I've never really been a fan of yours but I never like to see anyone get injued. I hope your injury isn't bad and get back on the field ASAP. As a Marshall owner I'd really like to thank you from the bottom of my heart... your injury came at the perfect time and will ensure that Marshall gets a plane ticket off the Titanic.

Heal up and thanks again.

Sincerely,

Marshall Owners Everywhere

Orton recovering from painful dislocation

NFL sources said that while Kyle Orton’s injured finger was not fractured, the Broncos quarterback suffered an open dislocation (meaning it penetrated the skin) of the right knuckle.

That would explain the blood dripping from Orton’s finger and the excruciating pain the quarterback endured as the dislocation was popped back into place by trainer Steve “Greek’’ Antonopulos.

Orton suffered the injury when on the follow-through of his second-quarter pass, his right hand collided with the left hand of Chicago Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye.

“”I think maybe it was one of those things where his hand got caught bad as he was throwing it when I hit him,’’ Ogunleye said after the game. “”I hope he is OK. I pray he is OK.’’

In football time, a dislocation is not as serious as a fracture so while Orton will not play Thursday in the Broncos’ final preseason game against Arizona, he has not been ruled out for the regular-season opener, Sept. 13 at Cincinnati. Orton’s biggest problem might be the stitches he needed to close the wound.

“”I will be ready to go,’’ Orton said following the game Sunday night while trying to hide his heavily bandaged, but not casted, right finger. “”I am going to work as hard as I can. I don’t know how long I’ll be out but mentally I will be ready to go and I think physically I will be, too.’’
I don't know how they think he'll be ready to go in 13 days.

This thing that irks me the most about this whole situation is that, if Orton is gone for a while, that means the team might be stuck with McDaniels for even longer now. If he had "his " whole team in place and the team goes 3-13 (as I predicted), then there is a chance he is gone next year and the team can begin to move forward. But now he has an excuse, "Well, if only we were healthy, we could have shown how great I am," which means Bowlen might be inclined to give him another year.

All in all, this has been a terrible off-season. Thank goodness for FF to take my mind off this junk.

Agreed. It seems like it would be difficult to take a snap let alone grip the ball and throw it downfield. Which defense is Denver facing week 1?

OAK

Those are the 1st 3 games...all defenses you can grab off the WW.

lots of 'I drafted Orton, Moreno, Royal, now what do I do???'

:kicksrock:

:tfp:

are you telling me you couldn't see the Broncos train coming off the track weeks ago??!

'cmon now..

this team has had `fantasy wasteland` written all over it, from the day they let Cutler get away.

even earlier than that, probably the day they let Shanahan go.

HAPPY as heck that I didn't select any Denver players!

Better pick up Major Applewhite in case Simms falters falls down while the stretching.
Fixed  Seriosuly, Orton will be the guy here, as much as the majority don't want it to be the case. You'll be surprised how quickly he heals up.

Phew...glad you could clear that up for me. For a minute there I was worried about him not being able to start.

The Other Upside: Seattle Seahawks get Denver's #1 pick next year! Denver, keep sucking it up please! You are doing a great job. Seattle will get a top 3 pick next year.

I know your unabashed Ortonlove is strong, but I don't think it can actually heal him. Or make him good, for that matter.

What the hell happened to this franchise? I used to envy them, and it suddenly turned into a trainwreck, a laughingstock almost. I still can't believe that Kyle Orton is even their starter.ETA: They did sign BDawk, but it's easily forgotten with all the other things that are going on.

Brandstater to start vs. Cardinals

Comment Email Print Share

Associated Press

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- With the Denver Broncos' top two quarterbacks sidelined by injuries, rookie Tom Brandstater will start the team's preseason finale Thursday night against Arizona.

The start, even though it comes in the last exhibition, represents a dramatic turn for Brandstater, who watched from the sideline barely taking a snap in practice let alone the exhibition season as Kyle Orton and backup Chris Simms got virtually all the work.

Brandstater said he's spending extra time studying this week to get a better handle on the playbook going into the game.

"As a starting quarterback now -- that actually sounds crazy to say -- but I am starting on Thursday, and there's a lot of work that needs to be put in to be the guy," a bemused Brandstater said. "While the other guys are not here, I'm going to act like I'm the starter, and I'm not going to look back until someone tells me I'm not playing anymore."

Brandstater, a sixth-round pick out of Fresno State, played more than a half in Sunday's 27-17 loss to Chicago, leading the Broncos to two touchdowns after coming on for the injured Orton.

Orton gashed and apparently dislocated his right index finger when he struck a defender's helmet with his passing hand during a follow-through.

The Broncos were already without Simms, who suffered a left high ankle sprain during an exhibition game the week before at Seattle.

Coach Josh McDaniels said he remained hopeful that both Orton and Simms would be able to return to practice next week and be available for the Broncos' Sept. 13 opener at Cincinnati. But he also left open the possibility that one or both could miss the first regular season game.

"We're hopeful we'll have all our players ready to go on opening day, but again the timetable for that, I would be totally guessing and probably wrong if I started guessing about that stuff right now," McDaniels said.

Neither Brandstater nor fourth-stringer Ingle Martin has had a meaningful snap during the regular season.

McDaniels said Brandstater had a strong practice Tuesday -- the team's only major workout prior to the preseason finale -- and his grasp of the offense has improved significantly.

"He's a mature kid and he's really picked up on some of the things that sometimes take quarterbacks longer to do, run the huddle, get the formations lined up and that kind of stuff," McDaniels said. "He's getting better every day and that's what we like to see out of our young guys."

Brandstater saw his first action as a pro when he replaced Simms on short notice and looked overwhelmed, taking four sacks and completing one of his four throws for 1 yard against the Seahawks. But he appeared much more poised in his most recent outing, completing 8 of 12 passes for 110 yards, including a long of 54 yards to fellow rookie Kenny McKinley.

Brandstater said he can't really explain the leap in his play.

"I've tried to analyze it myself and I have no idea. Really, I'm still in the clouds, trying to get better," he said.

Brandstater did say that his confidence has grown since experiencing some success in his last outing.

"Something clicked," he said. "I felt so much better, and I don't even know when it was, but at some point, I felt like I really belong out here. I can do it. There wasn't that nervous second-guessing any more."

He said maybe he can even help the Broncos do something they haven't managed to do yet.

"We're 0-3 in the preseason and even though that doesn't mean anything, to me as a competitor, I want to help this team win a game," he said.

Even if Orton does play with the injured hand (there has to be at MINMUM a small negative affect on his throws), how effective can he be?

In week 1 on the road against the Bengals, what are predictions for this contests outcome? Is it a complete blow out?

The only larger margin of victory I see in Week 1 is Baltimore over KC. Whoever plays QB for KC may actually die...
