Yeah I heard that one already... Hopefully its not all that bad and he will be fine on sunday...

L.J. Smith has an AC sprain
Where did you hear this from? I've searched, and I have not found anything that has specified his injury (other than just a shoulder sprain).
When you say shoulder sprain you usually think AC sprain. AC sprain is what Leihart had during the preseaon. There are several degrees of AC sprain severity. Because he was able to play after hurting his shoulder I would have to think it's not that bad.

Thanks ATC. I appreciate the insight, however sprains in the shoulder aren't just limited to the AC joint. You have SC (sternoclavicular) sprains and GH (glenohumeral) sprains. And injury information is usually very vague and misleading. You hear of muscle strains referred to as sprains and ligament sprains referred to as strains all the time. So I'm not sold that a shoulder sprain in this case actually means AC sprain.

I agree, that's why I said usually. However, the SC would not be really considered the shoulder. GH sprains would be considered the subluxation ala Portis. But you are right, the media does say sprain, and for all we know it can be a rotator cuff strain.

ATC, I'm assuming your a trainer. I've done so much injury research and reading over the last few years that I feel like a doctor or trainer myself at times. I have a son working through a bad knee injury and the trainer at his school really knows his stuff. At any rate, I am just trying to get a feel for his injury because I have him in my high stakes league and I would prefer to start him over Ben Troupe.

Injuries and opening remarks: "Injuries, start with (DE) Jevon (Kearse), Jevon has a severe knee injury. He is still being evaluated right now so I won't be able to give you a time or length on a recovery. I'll be able to let you know that a little bit later. (G) Shawn Andrews has a shoulder strain and he is going to have an MRI today. (TE/LS) Mike Bartrum has a slight knee sprain. (CB) Rod Hood has a heel strain. (TE) L.J. Smith has an AC sprain. (RB) Brian Westbrook, his knee is still bothering him just a bit. He has a little swelling on it. And then (CB) Lito (Sheppard) still has the ankle sprain."

"Again, now on this game yesterday, I feel very much like I did last night. We did some good things (that) we're proud of this football team for doing. And then on the other hand, we did some things that we need to work on and that we can learn from. You're going to have tough losses in the NFL. It's very important that you learn from them and that you move on. And that starts with the head coach and works its way all the way through our football team.

"One of the things we need to do, obviously, from this game is to finish better and be more detailed in that part of it. Cut down on some of the mistakes and make sure we stay aggressive, both as coaches and as players."

 I am. You do know your stuff. I'm looking at this close as well. I targeted Smith in my auction leagues and got him for cheap. I have him in 3 out of 7 leagues.

You can't take much at all from this statement. Except that the AC sprain is confirmed.

LJ stayed in the game after he hurt it.Gotta keep an eye out o nthis one.
It is quite common that when you get a sprain, there is some initial pain, and then you can play on with it. However, the problem surfaces the next day, when it is swollen and stiff and sore. Then it can take time to recover.

hopefully hes good to go this week or back next week.. He started the season oh so well..

I also got Smith cheap ($2), then cut him for Desmond Clark ($1). Now I'm trying to decide if I want to try to re-acquire him or not.

The old AC sprain. I did mine about 7 or 8 times before finally needing surgery.

I injured mine once in a high school game and was able to play out the game, playing WR & DB (where you need to be able to extend your arm). I was fine throughout the game. Afterwards, it was pretty tight. The next morning, I couldn't move it at all. I was forced to sit out one week, though I still think I could have played! I played the rest of the season with it wrapped and an extra pad under the shoulder pads and was able to extend my arm, block, etc. without any problem. It did not hold up for wrestling season and I finally ended up getting surgery before freshman year of college. But, with pads, treatment before and after, etc., it was fine during football season. This was maybe 18 years ago and reliant on sub par high school facilities -- I'm sure they can do much more now to keep L.J. out there.

I had also separated it before and didn't miss any time, so it's hard to tell. I'll be watching closely to see what Reid says on Wednesday. It will completely depend on the severity of the sprain. An AC sprain is a shoulder separation, if memory serves. If it's slight, L.J. should be fine. If it's more severe, he could sit out a week or more. If it's really bad, I suppose surgery may be an option, but I sort of doubt that.

The Eagles return to work Wednesday without cornerbacks Lito Sheppard and Roderick Hood and minus versatile running back Brian Westbrook. Tight ends L.J. Smith and Mike Bartrum will also sit out practice.

Head coach Andy Reid detailed the injury report in his Wednesday press conference. He also announced that with Jevon Kearse sidelined for the season, Trent Cole will move into the starting lineup this week against the Niners. Actually, Darren Howard will move over to the left side and Cole will slide into the right defensive end spot, from which he's collected our sacks through two games.

bulger has f'd up his ac joint the last couple of years...of course LJ won't be throwing the ball so i don't know if it will KO him for as long as it did bulger.

i do suggest rotoworld take some anatomy lessons though...

Eagles TE L.J. Smith suffered an AC sprain in his knee during Sunday's loss.

:)

I guess Friday will tell the tale. If he practices he will most likely be fine for Sunday. If not, or if hes limited, maybe look for another option at TE

FWIW (not much), AOL posted this update yesterday:

THE NEWS

Eagles tight end L.J. Smith is expected to play in the week three game in San Francisco. He suffered an AC sprain (shoulder) early in Sunday's loss to the Giants, but he returned to action after missing a little time, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Our View

Smith currently leads all tight ends in receptions (13) and yards (167), and we should have a better idea of his status as the week progresses and the team practices. Fantasy owners should tentatively plan to use him against the 49ers.

If hes questionable, then I question his position on this weeks FBGs cheetsheet....unless it was done before the injury report came out.

I have some good news....(KFFL) Les Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Eagles TE L.J. Smith (shoulder) missed practice Wednesday, Sept. 20 and is listed as questionable for Week 3. He told reporters he would play in the game. This shows his shoulder sprain is no big deal.. Hes probably just resting it a bit..

FYI, he played with this all last year and still caught 100 yards after it happened on Sunday. He will not miss any games.
