Randy has been the Dodgers' best starter in the second half. Good to see. I went to high school with him.
Saw that special they do about the players, on Wolf. Seems like a good guy. K Comet, they just said that ball Kemp hit was estimated at 449 feet. Christ.
It was longer, then. It sounded like a rifle shot when it left the bat. A blind man would have known it was gone. I'm developing a serious man crush on Kemp. Good job by Haeger to get into the 8th inning - consecutive quality starts by the pitching staff. By the way, Fuld is pissing me off. That guy has been robbing the Dodgers left and right the past two games.
That catch he had running into the bullpen gate was incredible. Looked like he cut up his face an knee in the processes. Any thought on how this bullpen reversal is going to come out? I think the circumstances created the opportunity yesterday but that opens the door for Torre to make a more permanent change.

I don't think Torre is looking to make the change permanent. It was the smart move based on the circumstances. I think it opens the door for him to bring in Broxton for the 8th if the situation calls for it more often now, but I think by and large he's not looking to replace Broxton. I think JB will have to pitch his way out of the closer spot - hopefully he doesn't.Big series starting today - come on Big Blue Wrecking Crew, wake up those bats!

this sucks
Yup. They need to take the next two to feel good about this series, and that's a tall order. Wolf should beat Fogg; I have no idea how to handicap Padilla v. De La Rosa on Thursday. The truth is that the Rockies are in the midst of a historic turnaround within the same season, and kudos to them for doing it and to Jim Tracy (who I always liked) for orchestrating it. The Dodgers have helped them by cooling off, but credit funamentally goes to the Rockies. The Dodgers need to turn it on now, and I'm wondering whether they're capable of doing that. Manny in particular needs to show up- as he goes, the offense seems to go.

Big win today - Padilla throws 5 decent innings, Kemp hits a dinger, and the pen is excellent. Good series for the Dodgers. And Furcal actually came up with a clutch hit as well, who knew?

This series had me really worried, especially after the game 1 loss. And while I'm at it- I grow more and more impressed with Matt Kemp.

It looks like Broxton has his fastball back up to form. He's hitting 100 and upper 90s again rather than the low-to-mid 90s he seemed to be throwing with the toe problem.

That's got to be intimidating having a scowling offensive tackle throwing triple digits at you and snapping off sliders that top 90 mph. Dude is unreal when he's on.

Nice to get another arm in the mix (and a win today), but the Padilla signing makes me wonder if Kuroda is going to be out for the year. I think the roster expansion is going to be a big help. It will give Torre a few more options to rest everyday guys and make situational pitching changes, which, aside from the debacle with J-Mac in the first game of the series, is still a strong point for him... I think... I hope. This was a huge series for the Blue. How long has it been since they've had any momentum whatsoever? Hopefully they can roll into Cincy and clean house. And I agree, Kemp is turning into a fantastic player. His ceiling is just about unlimited. A 5-tool guy who's among the best young players in the game. Him and Ethier are a tremendous outfield duo. I just wish Loney could get a few more bombs in there.

Vin had a good comment on the broadcast about it being rare when you look at an opposing scoreboard flash "changeup" and see the radar gun register 91 mph. Good to see. His slider was filthy today.

Kuroda was in the dugout yesterday and is supposed to start pitching to batters this weekend. In the short term Padilla was added partially to fill the hole from Kuroda being out but more than that I think it was to add more starting pitching depth with Billingsley 's slight injury, keeping Kershaw's innings a little lower and the lack of any consistent 5th starter.

Loney either needs to hit for more power, or get his average up near .300, but he's definitely underperforming.

The Boys in Blue just acquired Jim Thome and John Garland. No details of the trades yet.

Wow. They would appear to want to win it this year.
Meh. Garland is nothing more then a #4 starter at this point. He definitely won't be in a rotation for the Division series.I don't understand the Thome trade to an NL team. The guy can't play the field anymore. So he is nothing more than a LH pinch hitter off the bench. His only value come if the Dodgers make it to the WS.

Effing great catch by Ethier tonight. Awesome. Kemp goes yard again. By the way, what's with Manny looking at another fastball for strike three? Seems like I've seen him do that a lot the last few weeks. Just doesn't seem right.

He hit better when he was pregnant. :lmao:

Ethier's catch was great.Manny has been hitting a bunch of pop-ups too. Very frustrating lately.

You guys see this almost trade?

Code:
Via Twitter, Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Padres almost dealt Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers for James Loney, Russell Martin, Blake DeWitt, James McDonald and Ivan Dejesus. Wow.
Reports are that the Pads would have done it but the Dogs got cold feet. I dunno, seems like this trade is crazy favorable for the Dodgers. I wonder why they didn't want to do it.
 Dodgers could be free of Martin and McDonald right now.

Thanks for picking that scab again Gadfly - as if it didn't hurt enough the first time I saw that. :lmao: Is McDonald's nickname Gas Can? It should be.For ESPN insiders, there's a good Gammons column about the NL West - talks about Kemp prominently.

Juan Pierre now has more stolen bases than strikeouts. In 336 at-bats, he has 25 stolen bases, 24 strikeouts and 24 walks. Now, that is the type of player I like. His last strikeout was Aug. 22, 30 plate appearances ago.

I'm starting to believe that the 2009 Dodgers = the 2008 Cubs. They're staggering into the post-season, and it's not even guaranteed at this point that they'll make the postseason, especially if they don't win the division.

The Dodgers aren't playing that poorly. 12-8 in the past 20 games. It's just that the Rockies have won seven in a row. The Dodgers can play better and put this away.

The record isn't reflective of how shaky and inconsistent they've been.

Good to see the bats wake up last night, especially when facing a guy like Cain. Not good news on the pitching front, though, as it turns out Kerhsaw separated his shoulder and Wolf's injury is a hyperextended elbow he got taking batting practice. Jesus, do the Dodgers have to baby their pitchers off the mound now as well as on? Dodger Notes

Nice couple of games versus the Giants, thus far. Hell, even Russell Martin went deep. The offense seems to be clicking.

I have to say, Vicente Padilla has been outstanding in his time in Dodger blue. I wasn't expecting much when he signed, but he's exceeded expectations.

It's looking like the Dodgers got him so they don't have to start Billingsley anymore. Since the All-Star break, Billingsley is the No. 6 starter on the team.

No joke - I can't watch that guy's starts any more without getting an aneurysm. What is going on with Billingsley? If he's hurt, why is he pitching? If he's not, why is he sucking every time out?

Yeah, he's been horrible. And it's not like he wears out and then gives up runs.

gotta love MLB schedulemakers. pirates vs. dodgers 7 times in september including the final series in pittsburgh.

then 2010 open up in pittsburgh

I think it's a dumb schedule though it certainly works in the Dodgers' favor. September should be filled with intra-division games, and the final series should always be the Giants IMHO.

I agree, but with 5 teams in the division they can't always play intra-division.

Love the Dodgers 7-8-9 pitchers today. 3 perfect innings with 4 strikeouts. Kuo, Sherrill and Broxton -- devastating combo when healthy.

Wow, that was pathetic. I almost hope the Dodgers could somehow miss the playoffs so they would get what they deserve for such a putrid performance. Bases loaded, no outs, tie game in the ninth with Ethier, Manny and Kemp up and you can't score?

Yeah, but at least Ethier added one more "walk off" to his total.

Raffy is finally starting to hit the ball, fellas.
Loney's had a good month. Kemp seems to be sharpening his game. Kuroda's back, and Billingsley threw his best game since late spring/early summer. Hopefully they're entering the post-season with some momentum here and can beat strong teams like the Cardinals and Phillies.
