Lance Briggs or Jamar Williams to MLB this week? (1 Viewer)

Hard to know if this writer is reading too much into this -- more time could just come at Nick Roach's expense as we've discussed elsewhere. Hunter Hillenmeyer is expected back at practice today, so that may be the way this works out. Still, since Lovie Smith was just cryptic enough to not be certain how this turns out, but Jamar Williams is a must roster now.

With weak-side linebacker Lance Briggs expected to return Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, coach Lovie Smith hinted that Jamar Williams or Briggs could move to middle linebacker to facilitate more playing time for Williams after his 20-tackle effort against the St. Louis Rams

Briggs missed the game with a knee injury but practiced on a limited basis Wednesday.

''When you play like that, it warrants more time,'' Smith said of Williams. ''Jamar did a great job, but he's not Lance Briggs. We'll always try to get players on the field who can help us win. He proved last week ... he can do that.''

Smith reported that wide receiver Devin Hester (calf) and linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer (groin) didn't practice Wednesday.

Here's the press conference quote yesterday:

“When you play like that, it warrants more time and it’s not like it’ll be at Lance Briggs’ position,” said coach Lovie Smith. “Jamar did a great job, but he’s not Lance Briggs. We’ll always try to get players on the field that we feel like can help us win. He proved last week that you could say that he can do that. We’ll just let the rest of the week play out and try to find ways to get him a few reps.

“We’ll see exactly who is available, make those decisions and then go. You have three starters, but we play a lot of guys at a lot of positions. You can say that Jamar deserves a little more time on regular plays, yes.”

You can read that as either SLB or MLB, I'd guess.

Looks like both Briggs and Hillenmeyer both practiced fully yesterday and both look to start. So Williams may get snaps at SLB but unless they decide to look to the future he may not be all that great an option for this season.

Now how about keeper and dynasty leagues for 2010 and beyond?

What are the contract situations for Briggs and Hillenmeyer? Could Williams possibly start as soon as next year?

I have been riding Hillermeyer in most of my leagues as an LB3 right now and I think his days are #'d. Hillermeyer owners have to hope for is that Williams replaces Roach for this season. Hopefully if Jamar get the Middle spot we'll get word before a game starts.... hopefully
