Steelers Cutting Larry Foote

Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2009, 11:22 a.m. EDT

A league source tells us that the Steelers will be cutting linebacker Larry Foote.

More details to come after radio spot with Paul Allen of KFAN in Minnesota.

I would be really surprised if true. They would be thin at ILB if they did this and with the contracts of Ward and Taylor being redone, they don't need the cap room.

They did try to trade him, guess there were no takers. Look for Green Bay to make a contract offer as they would love an ILB familiar with that scheme.

From February:

Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:00 am ESTSteelers' Foote won't take pay cut; headed to Detroit? The Detroit Free Press quoted a close friend of Larry Foote's who said the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker would like to play for the Lions."He wants to come back here," said Brian Blackburn, Foote's friend. "This is the last year of his contract, and he wants to come back here and play for the Lions for about four years and call it quits after that."Foote is signed through next season but is scheduled to earn $2,885,000 and he has Lawrence Timmons, the team's first-round draft choice in 2007, behind him. Foote likely would resist if the Steelers request he take a pay cut, leaving the choice in their hands to pay him or release him. They also could try to negotiate an extension, but with Timmons in the picture, that might be a difficult decision.

I remember reading some buzz early in the year that Foote may be on his way out so I too assume they tried to trade him. I'm sure he will catch on somewhere quickly. As a Timmons owner I hope this will lead to more opportunity.

There have been lots of reports of the Steelers trying to deal Foote. His salary isn't prohibitve but the Steelers are trying to free up cap space and $3 million is nothing to sneeze at.

At this point, this is just a rumor started by Florio who is more often wrong than he is right.

The only way this makes sense is if Starks/Miller extensions are nearing completion.

I will be very surprised if this goes any further than the rumor stage.

Foote is a valuable member of the team with very little experience behind him.

Foote's agent says Larry was not surprised that he WAS cut.

I just heard that Foote wants to return to his hometown and play for the Lions. Foote wants to start building his after-football in Detroit, and playing the last few years of his career in Detroit will help.

I would love to see Larry as a Lion. :goodposting:

I don't see why people in here are worried, Timmons is superior to Foote. Although it hurts their depth, i think their starting 11 on defense just got stronger.

This isn't a big surprise. Since last year there have been rumblings of Timmons being the eventual starter and Foote being unhappy about that. Timmons looked like a beast out there last year, so I don't think it's surprising that he is going to get the starting job.

The Steelers LBs are going to be really, really scary (for opponents) this year.

Steelers to release linebacker Larry Foote

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Larry Foote played a lot of football as a starting inside linebacker for the Steelers the past five seasons, and in a strange twist, his search for more playing time will cause them to release him.

Sources close to Foote say he wants to continue his career as a starting linebacker where he can play more often and asked the Steelers to accommodate him. After reportedly finding no offers in a trade, sources on the club say they plan to release him sometime after this weekend's minicamp, which Foote will not attend.

Their delay in releasing him might be a last-ditch effort to try to trade him.

Foote has one year left on his contract that was scheduled to pay him a salary of $2,885,000 in 2009. There was much speculation leading up to the Super Bowl that the Steelers might release him or ask him to take a reduction in pay because of that salary and because 2007 first-round draft choice Lawrence Timmons is behind him. Foote indicated during Super Bowl week that he would not take a pay cut.

Foote did not attend the team's first two voluntary workouts last week. His agent, Ken Kremer, said at the time he was working out in Detroit and planned to attend this weekend's minicamp. Kremer also said there had been no contract discussions between him and the Steelers. Kremer could not be reached for comment today but sources say he was calling teams to try to place the linebacker elsewhere. There were reports during the week preceding the Super Bowl that Foote wanted to play for his hometown Detroit Lions if he were released.

Coach Mike Tomlin said shortly after the season that he wanted to keep Foote around and had no plans to release him.

Foote, a fourth-round draft pick from Michigan in 2002, has been a starter at inside linebacker since 2004.

This could explain the Lions passing on a MLB in the draft.

I really hope the Packers swoop in and grab him. 3/4 experienced ILB from the Pitt system would be very nice. If they do go after him, it may mean Barnett is far from being 100%.

Ugh. Yet another overpaid has-been free agent signing by the Lions (when it happens). We are the destination for guys past their prime to get fat and retire because they know they'll be on a losing team with no expectations.

He's not even 30 yet. He's not going to be a gamebreaker but I'm assuming most Lions fans aren't going to hold their noses up at a LB that's had success in the Pittsburgh system.

Maybe true. But when will the lions realize that good teams draft these guys, and bad teams overpay them as veteran free agents?Foote has already said he wants to come to Detroit to play a few years and retire. This does not sound like a highly motivated individual to me. He was pushed out of Pittsburgh by a younger, better, hungrier player.

LB Larry Foote says he would like to become a Lion

By MICHAEL ROSENBERG • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • April 28, 2009

Larry Foote wants to play for his hometown Lions.

“Ain’t no doubt about that,” Foote said from his home in Michigan today, after he learned that the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers plan to release him. “I would love to come home. My family is here. I just bought a house here. It would be great. And just to answer critics: I’m not a veteran trying to come home and cash out on my hometown team. I’m a baller first. I wouldn’t sacrifice that for nothing.”

Before Lions fans get too excited, though, please understand: this is hypothetical.

“I would love to come home, but whoever wants me, that’s who I’m going to start with first,” Foote said.

Foote said this afternoon that he had been asking the Steelers for his release and was under the impression this morning that he had gotten his wish. But he talked to Pittsburgh director of football operations Kevin Colbert in the afternoon, and he told him Foote had, in fact, not been released ... yet.

"He said they're trying to trade me," Foote said.

It is likely that if the Steelers don't find a trade partner, they will release Foote.

Foote, who played at Detroit Pershing and Michigan, started every game for the Steelers in the last five years and helped Pittsburgh win two Super Bowls. He turns 29 in June, and he was only let go for financial reasons and because the Steelers have a talented replacement, Lawrence Timmons, on the roster.

“I’m actually happy,” Foote said. “I’d be a little more happy if they did it in February, but it all worked out. The last couple of years, they got me locked into a certain role where, quite frankly, I couldn’t grow from it anymore. As a football player, I was tired of that situation. I’m a three-down linebacker, and they tried to turn me into a two-down linebacker, take me off the field in passing situations. I don’t want to be sitting back in a role, knowing I could do more.

“It gives me a fresh start, a new opportunity to show myself. There is a lot of football left inside of me. Quite frankly, I don’t know if people have seen the best of me because I’ve been locked up the last couple of years.”

Because of his age and talent level, Foote would seem to be attractive to the Lions, who desperately need linebacker help. But the Lions play a 4-3 defense, and the Steelers play a 3-4, so the Lions would have to decide whether Foote would fit their scheme. He said today he envisions himself as a middle linebacker “but I can play outside” if necessary.

As for the Lions …

“I don’t necessarily say that’s my first choice, but if it’s a tie with other teams, the Lions are definitely going to win,” he said. “But I’m getting a lot of calls from other teams as we speak now.”

Foote added that, ideally, he would like to sign with somebody “as soon as possible. A lot of teams are doing minicamps this week. I would want to get in there and learn the playbook.”

Maybe I am missing something but I don't see where it benefits the Steelers in releasing him at this time. Unless they need the cap space now or he is due a big roster bonus soon I don't cut him.

First off some team may come forward with an offer for Foote during the offseason or training camp. Sure it won't be much knowing that he wants out but anything is better than nothing.

If not then you can release him any time before the season begins. At least he would provide some insurance in case something would happen to Farrior or Timmons. I just don't see how the Steelers gain anything by releasing him now -- unless they just want to shut him up.

They are going to release him on Monday because he did not shout up for mini camp because he does not want to be in Pittsburgh any longer. Kudos to Foote

Blew this call badly.Didnt realize he wanted out so much.

Um, no. It was mutually agreed upon before his no show that he wasn't coming.
Friday, May 01, 2009First day of mini-camp notes, Foote updateAs expected, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed today that he and Larry Foote decided it would be beneficial for both parties if Foote did not attend the mandatory mini-camp this weekend. Tomlin said Foote will not be fined.

He doesn't want to be in Pittsburgh because he knows if he stays he's going to lose his starting gig and his playing time will be diminished. However at this point the Steelers have not released Foote. If released by the Steelers it will surprise me that the rest of the NFL thinks so little of him as to not even make an offer for his services. On second thought that does sound like most of the Lions roster.

Kudos for leaving the best defense in the league? I applaud foote's service but your hatred is laughable

Good player who was reliable for the Steelers for a nice stretch (no missed games in 5? years.)

He'll be a nice pickup for someone.

CLE is on the way to DET, right? Lord knows we could use some LB'ers.
I really do believe that a LOT of teams have a big enough whole in the inside of their 3-4 D's to really get a big upgrade for their team.Browns

Chargers

Patriots

Chiefs

Broncos

49ers

and maybe even a couple more teams.
The rub in that department is going to be that Foote feels that he can be a 3 down contributor. I'd wager most of those teams will hold the same opinion about that as the Steelers(he can't, and isn't).Larry did a fine job in his time in Pittsburgh. I was probably harder on him than I should have been, but I always felt he would be one of the easier guys in the starting lineup to replace. He is good at what the Steelers asked of him: Scrape off blocks and tackle ball carriers on 1st and 2nd down. He is not good at what would allow him to be a 3 down player: Pass coverage and/or blitzing.

Given how he's talked in the media the last week or so, he's going to go to whatever team is willing to let him play all 3 downs(or at least tells him that they'll allow him to play all three downs.)

Given the situation, the "hometown" angle, and I believe I saw were he recently purchased a home in Michigan to boot, unless the Lions give him some kind of absolute lowball offer or tell him "Look, you'll be a two-down guy here too." I expect he ends up in Detroit.

Add Green Bay to that list.

Free agent linebacker Larry Foote will visit the Lions on Wednesday, his agent, Ken Kremer, said in an e-mail today.

Foote was released by the Steelers on Monday for salary-cap reasons, with one year left on his contract at a salary of $2.885 million. He played at Detroit Pershing and Michigan, and he has said he would choose his hometown team if all is equal.

The Lions have an opening at middle linebacker, though third-round pick DeAndre Levy was drafted with the idea of moving him from outside to the inside.

Something tells me the Lions won't pony up the $$ for him and he will go somewhere else.

We can hope anyway. They don't have a good track record in this regard.

Yup. Freep article quotes Foote saying he'd love to be there long term if it works out. Sounds like they'll take a year to see if he works out as a 3-down backer playing the middle in the 4-3.http://www.freep.com/article/20090505/SPOR...+like+90++done+
Anyone find contract amount? Probably won't release this until he signs I guess. Nice band-aid for the league's worst D, but :coffee: at the thought of the contract amount. Knowing the Lions they signed him for more than he was going to make as a Steeler at $2.8M.

This changes the O/U on wins to 4.I'm suddenly a little geeked. How sad is that?
I don't know much about the Lions LB corps but Foote is likely an upgrade so you have reason to be happy. That said I always thought Foote was an average LB surrounded by great talent and a genius defensive coordinator. It should be interesting to see how things work out for him in Motown.

Detroit's LB's are suddenly pretty good. Sims is always solid, traded for J. Peterson and now Foote are both huge upgrades from last year. This should improve Detroit's D as a whole. Aside from the LB's, they've upgraded the DB's with Buchanon and trading for Henry, and drafted Delmas. All in all, the D should be MUCH better this year (which I guess isn't saying much since they were probably the worst in history last year). As a Lions fan, it'll be nice to see a defense on the field that's not COMPLETELY void of talent

Sure the D is improved with the LB's. But what kind of support do they have on the line? I think the quality of the D line will make even this upgraded group of LB's look mediocre. As someone pointed out, maybe this D goes from 32nd to high 20's this year, and that's optimistic.

freep said it's less...but didn't say how much. it was clear he wasn't getting 2.8m so they negotiated from there. my guess is in the 1.5-2 range.

something tells me you'll complain no matter what they do...but they did also sign grady jackson to plug the middle. you can't deny that this D will be eons improved over last year. new CBs, new S, all new LBs, and new NT. that's a pretty impressive overhaul in one year.
