L.J. SCHEDULED FOR 2008 FREE AGENCY

Adam Schefter of NFL Network explains that Chiefs running back Larry Johnson's performance since entering the league in 2003 has allowed him to void the final two years of his rookie deal. As a result, he'll be a free agent in 2008.

Unless, of course, the Chiefs sign him to a long-term deal. Or apply the franchise tag to him next February.

The possibility that Johnson could be gone by next year at this time could be the reason for the team's decision to bring in tailbacks who are part of this year's draft class.

Though Schefter says that it doesn't appear that Johnson is on the trading block, a media source with knowledge of the dynamics in the K.C. front office firmly believes that the team is floating the notion that they are willing to move Johnson.

Hey, why don't the Bills offer the No. 12 overall pick straight up for Johnson? Then, the Chiefs can send the No. 23 pick and the No. 12 pick to Washington, if Adrian Peterson is still on the board at No. 6. Heck, under the trade chart the Chiefs could climb as high as No. 4, where they'd be certain to nail down Adrian Peterson.

Yet again, we've identified a scenario that makes way too much sense to ever happen.

I think it is ridiculous for KC to treat LJ this way. The guy carries the ball 400+ times while facing 8-9 guys in the box. If the chiefs get rid of LJ they can kiss the next 5 years Goodbye!

Sounds like a good reason to start looking for his replacement, no?
 while I'm not a proponent of 400+ carry seasons, LJ is ~2K carries light of the Eddie George workload (the back I see LJ being pretty close to in size/style/etc)w/only ~140 carries his first 2 seasons, Johnson still has a ton of work left in him---all owners sc'erd of keeping LJ, please forward all offers c/o ravnzfan!

The Chiefs drafted LJ when they had Priest. Why wouldn't they consider drafting LJ's replacement.

The average lifespan for an NFL RB is, what, something like four years?

Still not fair for them to abuse him like they did last year.

Herm abuses all his RB's that way. :kicksrock:

The "abuse" probably made him a lot more $ in '08. He had the lowest YPC of the top six backs but is viewed as just a small step behind Tomlinson as the best back in the league.
But by how much did it shorten his career?
I see what you're saying but I think it hurts whoever LJ is playing for in '08 more than it actually hurts LJ. His next contract(and huge signing bonus) will be his last big payday regardless of how many carries he has last season.

Because they did so well this year ...
Well...they did make the playoffs for the first time in about 10 years. I think they should trade him to a city that has a booming nightlife and club scene since he's admitted himself he's not a "mid-west" type of person.I kinda like the guy because he's not afraid to speak his mind. And he backs it up on the field.

Glad you brought this up. Some seem to have short memories because Perterson drafted LJ against Vermeil's wishes. LJ likely isn't going anywhere soon. This is nothing more than the beginnings of a long negotiation.
