Late Round Dynasty Draft Strategy (1 Viewer)

I'm in a league where we must drop 5 players at the end of each year and then restock with a 5 round rookie/free agent draft. I am curious how people would like to fill those last 2 restocking spots. Do you take a rookie who was probably a late round flier, do you take a 2nd or 3rd year guy who you think may get an opportunity by the next season, do you just take a couple of solid players that were overlooked by all those teams grabbing any rookie they can? It seems to me that most owners have grabbed any rookie they can which leaves some solid younger but non-rookies who may be a year away and there are also some solid veterans too. What is the best way to fill out a squad?

The best way to go about it is to NOT follow whichever of those strategies the rest of your leaguemates do. You'll find the most value in the least-used strategy.

I'd take the guy most likely to replace a guy above the "dropping 5" line. That's where the value is - getting players to be more than 1-hit wonders on your team.

If you struggle with what cuts to make each year, that means you have a good team.

Fill out your last few spots with players who will get playing time now or second string RBs. That way you get a clearer idea on their productivity ability (or opportunity for RBs) and can decide easier which ones to release when you make your free agent pickups as the season progresses. If you stash rookies or other prospects who are sitting on the bench but have potential, its harder to decide which one to release because you have little idea how good they are. The exception as noted is for RBs. If their are young second string RBs still available I prefer them over low profile prospects at other positions. A couple veteran RBs will get hurt before the season starts and others as the season goes. Its easy to release those RBs in favor of FAs who suddenly get that opportunity if the ones you stashed dont get it. If your stashed RB gets the opporunity, you dont have to compete for him in the waiver system.

Difficult for me to answer w/o the specific squad and/or league. If i have something that looks like a particular weakness or have taken fairly high risks at a position I will tend towards the veteran who fills a specifc need. If I have a solid squad overall, I am more likely to go for boom/bust prospects, whether rookie or 2nd/3rd year guys.
