So I'm looking for value post-draft as we all do this time of year. And I'm, of course, concentrating on unsettled situations.
Last year I was able to snag FWP at this time from WW and would like to find something similar again. Doesn't have to be RB as I'm happy to improve my roster anywhere.
In the toughest league I am in (12 teams), we start 3 wrs and can start up to 4.
Now, starting 4 is a sure sign of weakness in the RB core, but it is ppr so there is good trade value to be gotten even now.
Which brings me to my find. DJ Hackett. wr Sea. I can almost hear some of you spitting soda on the screen.
But hear me out.
D Jax is still not on the practice field and people are choosing their week 1 lineups. That's not good. I purposely stayed away from him this year as I couldn't justify the downside, and I really like him. He's a great rec and a solid part of any team, when healthy.
Had he been healthy he would most certainly have found his way to my roster.
There are several threads on D Jax and his issues, and Shick! has given some insight (as a homer) to what could happen. But this much is true, if Jackson's knees are as bad as some think, there will be value beyond Burleson in Seattle.
I've watched Engram the past 2 years and he's good at what he does. Slot rec, move the chains, keep the drive alive. But he's not a big end zone threat and won't be a difference maker on many rosters. Hackett can.
And the price is reasonable. I'm guessing he's available on almost any WW.
When I first started looking at him a week ago a couple things jumped out at me.
pros-
3RD yr WR.
6'2"
14+ ypr.
Good QB
And most important, huge opportunity.
Cons-
Warrick ahead of him in pecking order
Mann seems about even.
Had hammy issues in first coupla preseason games and didn't see the field.
Since then, the Djax news has still not noticeably improved, Hackett gets lots of playing time in week 4 (posting 6 for 70 and td) and Warrick gets cut.
At this point I drop Engram , bye week filler or throw-in for trade, and pick up Hackett.
After all, Engram will be there if I want him later and if Hackett's value shoots up, I've got a shiny new toy.
Now to the late draft handcuff.
So I've gotta make a decision at the draft. Do I want to put my fantasy fortunes in the hands of known blockhead T Owens or go the safer pick?
Remember this is ppr so elite wideouts are at a premium. In fact, they start flying off the board in this league around 1.09. And don't stop till early in the 3rd.
And if you don't get one, you are probably a cripple in this format.
So I pass. Take Boldin and hope to have a solid squad when I'm done. And I am in fact happy with that draft.
But lo and behold, who is waiting for me extremely late but Crayton. Now I know many of you would disagree with a WR handcuff in general. And ordinarily I think it's a waste of roster space.
But if there were ever a situation that demanded it this might be it.
And I'll say this out loud: If I knew I could get Crayton late, I would have drafted blockhead early.
This kinda gamble in a ppr league with large starting req is a good play.
The only reason I mention it is for those who have yet to draft, it's something to think about.
Had I been thinking about it, I would have done it.
