Out: LB James Harrison (ankle)

Doubtful: LB Joey Porter (hamstring), WR Willie Reid (foot)

Questionable: OG Kendall Simmons (foot)

Probable: FB Dan Krieder (ankle) , CB Deshea Townsend (hamstring), DE Brett Keisel

In other news, the Steelers re-signed QB Brian St. Pierre to the active roster. To make room for St. Pierre the Steelers cut rookie CB Javon Johnson. Also the Steelers cut rookie RB Cedric Humes and re-signed DE Shaun Nua.

Godsbro - What are you hearing about Duce??Why is this guy in sweats every freaking game?
odd man out. Willie starts. Verron, 3rd down and special teams. Najeh spells Willie occassionally, garbage time duties. No need for a fourth running back. Especially one that just doesn't seem to have it anymore.

The big question is why they chose to not release Duce in the pre-season? I don't know his exact numbers but his cap hit would not have been bad and you could see he was worthless. As a Steeler fan my opinion of Duce Staley has taken a full 180. I used to percieve him as unselfish the way he did not complain about his role. When he got off to a good start with the Steelers and was running for almost 100 yards every week but getting pulled at the goaline he did not complain. When he came back from his injury but got no touches for Bettis he never complained. I began to view him as a team player. Not anymore. He knew coming into this season that the primary ball carrier was going to be Willie but the GL and change of pace job was wide open. In light of that Duce looks like he sat on his fat but all off season and reported in horrible looking shape. All this tells me is this guy was not unselfish, he was just happy cashing his check. When he got the chance to compete he could have cared less.

The Steelers tried to trade for Duckett on draft day but could not work out a deal with the Falcons. When that didn't work out they were hopeful that Duce would be able to fulfill the short yardage role as well as serve as the primary backup for Parker.Unfortunately Duce showed up at training camp out of shape and did not perform well in preseason. Still they only had Parker, Haynes and not much else. The Steelers just felt they could not go into the season without a veteran backup RB. Had they started the season with Davenport on the roster, Duce would have been traded or cut. However since Duce was on the roster on week 1, they were required to pay his salary for the entire season. For that reason Duce is still on the 53-man roster, practices with the team, but is inactive on game day. He is there simply as an insurance policy in case of injury.

Yet they signed Davenport a few days after the deadline, so I guess the timing was bad. If we get Davenport before that deadline, clearly Duce would have been cut.

No question about it. They would love to have that 53rd roster spot but the Steelers aren't going to flush Duce's salary down the toilet unless it becomes absolutely necessary.
