Lav Coles.....4yr deal with the Bengals (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld.......

Bengals agreed to terms with WR Laveranues Coles, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter. The deal will pay $28 million over four years.

Coles, 31, isn't the deep threat he once was, but remains a gritty wideout with sure hands. Though injuries nagged him in 2008, he's played 16 games in five of his last six seasons and produced 850 yards on 70 catches last year, with seven touchdowns. Carson Palmer will be the best quarterback he's ever played with. Coles won't necessarily be the No. 2 option in Cincinnati's passing offense, so statistical improvement in 2009 is within reach.

Good move for Bengals, for once. They replace Housh with Coles for about half the price, and to overgeneralize, they're sort of the same player.

While I like the signing of Coles, this is a little more than I was hoping they would spend. Had they offered a deal like that to TJ at the end of the year, they probably could have kept him. I was also hoping to see the younger guys (Henry, Caldwell, Simpson) get some more reps this year. It all makes me wonder what Chad's status is. Is there a chance he is traded and Coles assumes the #1 spot?

Well, he just upgraded his 2009 QB by about 1,000 times.
Big Fitzpatrick fan are ya?
Coach Marvin Lewis reiterated Wednesday that Carson Palmer (elbow) is on pace for "normal entry" into the 2009 season. The Bengals anticipate Palmer being cleared to avoid Tommy John surgery on March 1. Palmer could be throwing at full tilt by the end of that month.

per Rotoworld January 28th.

Clemens owner, GrOOvus?

Pretty sure I saw a report that he was throwing with Henry in CA a couple weeks ago as well.

In all fairness to the Bengals and this deal........we don't know what is guaranteed of the 28 mill. And with Coles being 31 right now, it's almost fair to say that he will not be with the Bengals for the entire 4 years, players never are. Teams use them up and toss them to the side for a younger version and cheaper contract.

Nice fantasy boost for Coles and his owners. Should put up stats very similar to Housh's and Housh was even able to do that with Fitzpatrick. Ocho gets killed by Fitzpatrick, but the underneath guy like Coles profits or at least isn't starving.

I'd target Coles in all leagues, as he can probably be had for relatively cheap and will put WR2 type numbers this year with a pretty nice ceiling if Palmer is healthy.

always liked coles. say what you want about the whining, but he´s tough, gritty and always finds a way to get open. the guy shows up on game day, every Sunday. He´s the kind of player that will elevate the play of those around him by his style of play.

that said, I see him more of a possession receiver in this offense. he´ll get his rec/yards to keep drives alive, but the TDs will be light.

Is Coles considered an above average WR at this point? Only a couple teams were interested in adding him.

I don't think I'll be targeting him at all, probably still an okay WR3 if healthy though.

Just clowning around - I forgot free agent signings were serious business. Have they fixed the Bengals offensive line yet?

:bag: $7 mil a year for 4 years. HOLY CRAP! He isn't worth $4 mil a year if you ask me. Worst signing of the offseason IMO. This is why this franchise sucks

Wait, didn't Housh sign with Sea for $8mm per year??? How can Bungles fans be happy with this signing if it's only $1mm per year less than what Housh was paid?

Coles, 31 2008 70 850 7Housh, 31 2008 92 904 4 Looks like they saved themselves one million a year for essentially the same production :coffee:

Wow, talk about overpaying for a WR who isn't that great (and was never that good to begin with). I guess that's why they are the Bungals.

It's not $7 mill/year. People need to realize that the overall $ amount on these contracts is meaningless.

What is the guaranteed money?

What is his salary in each of the four years?

Game, Set, Match!!!As I read this thread, I understand wanting to analze it in terms of FF...but can we all agree that under no circumstances does Cinci operate on a level that will ever allow them to truly compete for anything? I'm sorry but Cinci is not a professional football team and should not be talked about like they are. Why does Marvin lewis still have a job? Why did David Shula keep his so long? Why was **** lebeau allowed to continue with such a poor record? Actually, Cinci is a great team to work for. They realize they hamstring any coach that will actually take the job so they honor the entire length of the contract no matter what the results. They have a good heart, the fans should be proud.

Lav must have REALLY wanted out of New York.
LOL.. Jets only offered 1 year and we don't know the guarantees and what this deal REALLY is...

But, ok.
It is all about guaranteed money...my guess is Coles gets a lot less than Housh.
Key part to this signing.... coles isnt getting an mri

Housh bests: 112 catches in '07, 1,143 yards in '07, 12 TDs in '07, 13.4 yards per catch in '04

Coles career: Nine seasons, 631 catches, 8,095 yards, 12.8 yards per catch, 44 TDs

Housh career: Eight seasons, 507 catches, 5,782 yards, 11.4 yards per catch, 37 TDs

Coles '08: 70 catches, 850 yards, 12.1, seven TDs

Housh '08: 92 catches, 904 yards, 9.8 yards per catch, four TDs

I'm just shocked that after all these years and on this board so many people rush to judgement on deals before seeing the Guarantees.... Weird.

There is no question this makes an enormous difference, but the & mil a year for 4 years will still be too high IMO because I would be surprised if it was 14 mil for the 4th year (as an example). After seeing the numbers, one has to assume Coles will be getting around 12 mil for the next 2 years and that is too much IMO.

I would assume the exact opposite - that he's getting a lower salary for the next two years, and the last 1-2 years are inflated salary numbers that everyone knows he has no chance of seeing.

This name shortening makes sense. Nobody can spell his first name. See also: Housh.

you don't know Coles very well. He's probably already trying to renegotiate his contract.
My comment that he wanted out of New York wasn't an indictment of the Jets. It just reflects poorly on Coles IMO. It's one thing to take the deal with the most money in free agency (all players do) but he negotiated his way out of New York to sign with the Bengals? Good luck with that Lav.

My scenario agrees with this, 12 mil for the 1st 2 years and 16 mil for the 2nd 2 years. If Cinci were smart, it should be more like 9 mil for the 1st 2 and 19 for the last 2

I pretty much agree with you, but as a selfish person, Lav may be thinking he would rather have Carson Palmer throw the ball to him then Ratliff

I don't think Coles would rather have Carson Palmer throwing the ball to him if it means he's not going to win many games. He wants to get paid, just like everyone else. But after that, he cares about winning not putting up big numbers.

Clearly he wanted at the very least a re-do with the Jets but it's clear he was disenchanted and wasn't realistically coming back. In terms of leaving the Jets for a team with a worse record the reality was that his two main options were the Bengals and Bills. He didn't have any other visits, right? So more money and better quarterback won out since the Bills and Bengals are roughly on par with each other given their position in their respective divisions. Seems pretty simple from a Coles perspective.

Now that he's had the news conference (and said he'll be Robin to Chad's Batman) has any word come out in terms of the structure and/or the amount of the guaranteed money?

And frankly I think with less upside. Housh is a far better receiver.
