League Divisions (1 Viewer)

Wasn't sure the correct forum for this one so point me in the right direction if needs be.

We're a 3rd year dynasty league of 12 teams. I'd like to implement divisions but I can't figure out how to make them "fair", or better way of saying, how to make it so no one is complaining to me all year about what division they're in. How do you split them up? Do you rotate who is in what division? For 12 teams do you prefer 2 divisions like AFC v NFC or a East, Central, West?

Currently we have playoffs in week 15,16. If I coudl figure out how to make it fair I was thinking 3 division winners +1 wildcard. Thoughts?

For Dynasty I prefer

3 division with rotating members based on prior year's finish

Div1

1st

4th

7th

10th

Div 2

2nd

5th

8th

11th

Div 3

3rd

6th

9th

12th

14 team league- no divisions

12 team league- 2 divisions, changed every year. The teams finsihing 1,3,5,7,9,11 are in the Black division and the 2,4,6,8,10,12 finishers are in the Blue division.

I hate changing our divisions. We are in a 12 team dynasty and we have three divisions. Everyone knows everyone else pretty well so when I first made the divisions I tiered all the owners.

- Three of us are hardcore about the league, we are on it every hour and keep up with every rumor

- Three guys are pretty active and big NFL fans, but they dont know things like Matt Leinart's middle name

- Another three are active but arent proactive, they let things flow

- And the last three are active but dont really participate in the chats or league decisions

Works out perfect and then we dont tweak it. I am sure some years there are divisions which are ridiculously tough and other ones are so weak but that makes it fun.

I can see the positives of redoing divisions each year in terms of parity... but I don't think those positives outweigh the rivalries that you get when you have divisions that stay constant. Ideally I would set up divisions based on already existing rivalries if I could. As an example, my dynasty league had 4 guys who went to college with me... another 4 guys who were childhood friends and/or met at a different college, and another 3 guys who I either worked with or who got into my work league as replacement owners. So things worked perfectly for 3 divisions of 4 grouping together those who were already friends and so would make great rivals. Even when the divisions aren't equal in strength I still think those rivalries bring more to the league than we lose. I've been stuck in the toughest division for most of the years and I wouldn't consider changing it to even that out.

As for how many divisions, I think that is something that should be decided in conjunction with your schedule and with how many playoff rounds you want to have. I think 4 teams in a division is a nicer number than 3 or 6, but if it creates a schedule nightmare to get your sceason in before NFL teams are benching players, it might not be the best.
