Leftwich left Bucs without a contract (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Byron Leftwich and the Bucs are reportedly "engaged in earnest talks," and the free agent quarterback could sign shortly.

Bucs coach Raheem Morris is a close friend of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who may have given Lefty a strong recommendation as a starting caliber quarterback. Leftwich would challenge Luke McCown and allow the Bucs to address other positions early in the draft.

Tampa Bay likes QBs like Denver likes RBs. I'm surprised its taken this long.

As a Falcon fan I have to thank Tomlin for sending Tubby down to the Bay. No need to worry about the NFC South challenging offensively from their Florida team if fragile, long wind up, lockeroom cancer Leftwhich is starting. HE was a joke in his stint as a qb in Atlanta. I never saw a worse NFL qb.

This would be the kind of signing that pushes Tampa into the playoffs. They are a QB away and Leftwich fits the bill perfectly.

The Bucs wouldn't mind building a team in the image of the Super Bowl champions, which is why they took a closer look Thursday at Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich.

But the 29-year-old Leftwich left Tampa Bay without a contract as the team continues to weigh it's options. Now we're hearing its unlikely the Bucs will sign Leftwich but they are committed to adding a fourth quarterback and wanted to evaluate him.

The Bucs are going to work out Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman next week. The thought here is that Tampa Bay will likely wait until after the draft to add a QB to the mix of Luke McCown, Brian Griese and Josh Johnson.

The Steelers have indicated they would like to have Leftwich back and he visited the Redskins last week. Everybody knows that Bucs coach Raheem Morris is greatly influenced by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, so it's not surprising Leftwich made a visit to Tampa Bay.

Leftwich played pretty well in relief of Ben Roethlisberger. But he has a slow release, his lack of mobility at times is a problem and you have to wonder if he would really push McCown for the starting job.

The truth is that the Bucs really aren't that impressed with the current class of free agent quarterbacks, which include Leftwich and former Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, who recently bought a home on Lake Keystone.

After the draft, some other veteran QBs may shake out of the trees as teams add rookie quarterbacks and the Bucs may want to wait and see if there are any trade possibilities as well.

It's a fluid situation, like anything else in the NFL, and we'll try to keep you update. But Leftwich signing with the Bucs doesn't appear as likely right now.

If he lasts that long, I can see Tampa holding out hope that Freeman drops to them at #19 in the draft...

Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen are no longer there, thus this can't be said anymore.

This seems to be a popular team/player pairing but Josh Freeman just isn't worth a 1st round pick IMO. He didn't make enough plays in the pocket at Kansas State and seems to struggle a bit with his mechanics. That just seems like a bad combo for a team that you would think is going to emphasize the acquirement of defensive players under Raheem Morris.

In fairness to Freeman the talent around him was woefully inadequate ...

The new administration is into all young players now.....hence their prophesized 4-12 season. I say let McCown start and see what he can do. No need to stir the pot yet again with Michael Brick

 Tampa still has way too much talent to go 4-12. Their secondary is quite talented and although there are some ?s at LB if things shake out they could still have a talented group there as well. They really only need help at DT on the defensive side of the ball. On offense, their OL is strong, their TEs are strong, and their RBs (now with Ward) are sufficient. The only ?s are at QB and, arguably, WR. If they hit on their #1 draft pick this year (QB/DT) then there is no reason that they shouldn't still compete to be a playoff team next year.

Steelers | Leftwich offered two-year deal

Fri, 10 Apr 2009 07:41:42 -0700

Ed Bouchette, of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have offered free-agent QB Byron Leftwich a two-year deal to re-sign with them. According to sources, the deal is close to minimum wage ($620,000 in 2009 and $755,000 in 2010) for Leftwich. If he returns to Pittsburgh, he would prefer a one-year deal.

That's true but Jay Cutler (I hesitate to even mention his name in a thread, knowing all hell could break out :excited: ) had a similarly questionable surrounding cast/situation at Vanderbilt a few years ago and his projection to the NFL was obvious. Freeman has a lot of athletic ability and a good arm but something is missing. Not sure if it's mental toughness, a lack of desire to be great, or what but whenever I saw him play "it" just wasn't there. If Freeman ends up with a coaching staff that knows how to groom quarterbacks I'll give him a shot. Not sure Tampa falls into that category. With the additional pressure of being a 1st round selection on a team without an established QB...it could be a disaster for him long-term prospects. :goodposting:Tampa homers - is Josh Johnson considered a bust or is he just not ready yet?

I will concede 4 wins to you. How does 8-8 sound?

It 100 percent depends on Morris and his desire to work with the kid. I've heard plenty of good things about him from media sources, but I have no clue what Morris' take is on him. Still a good dynasty prospect, but would obviously stay away from him in redraft.

I could accept the over-under being set at 8-8. QB is a big question mark right now for Tampa.

He has been great with the Steelers.
