Leftwich to Bears, Redskins? (1 Viewer)

Next season, Byron Leftwich is scheduled to make $5 million in base salary. The Jaguars are not going to want to pay him that much money if he's not the starter, which means the team could look to entertain trade offers. Leftwich would love the opportunity to go back home to play for the Washington Redskins, and he also finds the Chicago Bears appealing. If Jacksonville holds on to Leftwich next season, he would have the option of walking after it. Leftwich's contract is scheduled to expire after the 2007 season.

"Leftwich is our starter as soon as he's 100% healthy" stated Jack Del Rio. Leftwich has NEVER been 100% healthy.

He's never endeared himself to to the community and with a 6-1 (maybe 7-1) record as a starter Garrard has proven himself. Except, there was a movement in the pre-season when JDR gave Garrard a chance to win the job and he laid an absolute egg. Granted it was pre-season and as a Jax :homer: I like the spark Garrard has brought to his regular season wins but who has he played? Let's see what he does against IND, NE and KC before we crown Garrard the true #1. If he takes them to the playoffs again (last season Garrard took them down the stretch only to have Lefty suck in the playoffs) then Weaver, Harris and Del Rio will have a lot of options to consider this off-season.

The Jags have had a lot of success trading QB's after a game or two of success: Rob Johnson, Jay Fiedler as examples. I'm not saying it's unrealistic that Byron is gone next year, but it would have to be for a #1 or good player and sauce. Otherwise, Leftwich, Garrard and Quinn Gray (another very good QB2) are all under contract and the Jags would be foolish to let Lefty go because his feelings are hurt.

Every time a player is available, the Redskins are mentioned. I just don't see it, though, as long as the current coaching staff remains. They aren't going to want to teach a new QB and I don't believe they are unhappy with Jason Campbell.

Why would the Bears want a slow-footed, windup pitching QB? Rex has great potential - he just needs to reduce his mistakes.

There is no way the Bears will trade for a QB unless Grossman does horrible and kills them down the stretch; the Bears might trade for a backup to Grossman but even that not very plausible.

Griese is a great backup to have. How long is he signed for? I highly doubt that Leftwich would come to Washington. It would take Brunell retiring at a minimum, but even then they'd want to give every opportunity to Campbell who, as dgreen said, has done nothing to disappoint anyone there.

I'd look at Houston, Minnesota, Buffalo, Detroit or even Tampa before I looked at Chicago or Washington. Garrard doesn't strike me as the long term solution there. He's kind of like Frank Reich - very dependable backup who can run the offense, or at least a limited version of it given that he doesn't quite measure up to the starter's level of talent. He's not leading man material though.

I think the Redskins should trade Jax two 1st round picks to obtain Leftwich. That will allow them additional time to nurture the other QB they used multipe draft picks to take. But I think they should continue to keep and start Brunell and only use Leftwich if Brunell goes down with injury during a game.
